An amazing video posted by James Neihouse who is an IMAX cinematographer and was personally involved in this great project, A Beautiful Planet, shows lenses swapped in zero gravity during the Iss (International Space Station) mission. The camera is Canon Cinema Eos C500, and it’s marked with the IMAX logo. Is it the first IMAX-certified digital camera?

IMAX has reminded us that 40 years ago, an IMAX camera was used to shoot in outer space, by Sally Ride, who was the first American woman astronaut. Shooting with IMAX cameras is complicated. However, shooting with IMAX cameras in space is even more.

This week marks 40 years since Sally Ride made her mark on history as the first American woman in space. Born on May 26, 1951, in Los Angeles, California, Ride received a Bachelor’s in Physics and English in 1973 from Stanford University and, later, a Master’s in Physics in 1975 and a Doctorate in Physics in 1978, also from Stanford. NASA selected Dr. Ride as an astronaut candidate in January 1978. She completed her training in August 1979 and began her astronaut career as a mission specialist on Sts-7, which launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida on June 18, 1983. The...

Toni Myers, Hollywood's ultimate space heroine for turning around 120 astronauts and cosmonauts into moviemakers for Disney's A Beautiful Planet and Warner Bros.' Hubble 3D and Space Station 3D, has received the Order of Canada and a Nasa achievement award.
Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Alfonso Cuaron created classic space epics, but as directors never actually sent anyone in spaceboots and with a camera into Earth's stellar depths. IMAX is rolling out its ‘Enhanced’ home ent content via partnerships with streamers Tencent Video (China), FandangoNow (U.S.) and Rakuten TV (Europe), and device partners Arcam, Elite, Integra, Lexicon, Onkyo, Pioneer, Tcl and Trinnov.
Among first movies made available in the program will be Sony’s Venom and Alpha. Content is due to roll out on streaming services and some Sony Bravia TVs this year. IMAX formatted docs Journey To The South Pacific and A Beautiful Planet to the Enhanced format last year.
The home ent spec, announced in September 2018, combines digitally re-mastered 4K Hdr content with audio tech from Xperi subsidairy DTS. The two tech firms partnered with Hollywood sound mixers to use a variant of the DTS:x codec tech integrated in home audio equipment in a bid to replicate IMAX sound experience. A/V receivers from Sony and Denon and Marantz, and content collaborations with Sony and Paramount were announced at launch.

Late last week, another long list appeared out of thin air to clue us in to what AMPAS might be up to this year. Here, it was the near record 145 contenders up for nominations in Best Documentary Feature. Below you’ll see all of the 145, but I also want to just point out that the ultimate five nominees could literally be any one of them. Sure, there are some smarter bets, which I’ll address momentarily, but the way the Academy works, it may just come down to which winds wind up getting seen. Oscar will have their say soon, but until then, it’s a guessing game. Still, that’s kind of what I do for a living. As such, let the guessing on my part continue! It can sometimes be hard to figure out which hopefuls turn out to be the frontrunners, but there’s definitely some higher end titles.

Is it just us, or does Jennifer Lawrence get more gorgeous every time we see her? On Wednesday, the actress attended the New York premiere of activist Gloria Steinem's new show, Woman, looking like an absolute dream. Clad in a stunning black lace dress, Jennifer was all smiles as she struck a handful of poses on the red carpet. This is just the latest we've seen of the star since she popped up at CinemaCon with Chris Pratt and debuted her latest film, A Beautiful Planet, in NYC, although we did catch her having a little fun with photographers while walking her dog last month. Keep reading to see more of Jennifer, and then feast your eyes on her hottest bikini moments.

It didn’t show up in the Cannes line-up as some predicted, but we won’t have to wait too long for Terrence Malick’s long-gestating Voyage of Time. The Ennio Morricone-scored project — which is technically two films, one a more educational 40-minute IMAX version narrated by Brad Pitt and the other a feature-length cut narrated by Cate Blanchett — is described as “a celebration of the earth – from the birth of the universe to its final collapse.”
Finally, we have our first official confirmation on when it will arrive. Buried deep in an IMAX press release (via One Big Soul) about its first quarter 2016 earnings, they reveal that an October 7th, 2016 release is set for the IMAX version, which now makes a Tiff and/or Venice premiere likely. With only IMAX reporting now, there isn’t an update regarding the feature-length version, but hopefully distributor Broad Green Pictures will...

Jennifer Lawrence's dating life is apparently nonexistent. In a recent interview with Extra at the premiere for the documentary A Beautiful Planet - which Lawrence narrates - host Aj Calloway starts to talk about the A-list star's dating life, to which Lawrence laughs and says, "What dating life?" "None?" asks Calloway. "No. None," admits Lawrence, 25, before Calloway asks if she's kidding. "No, I’m not. It's really sad. I haven't felt the touch of a man in ..." the actress says before the two burst into laughter. The clip then cuts to Calloway telling Lawrence "that can be like the next project.

Consider this pair of trailers a yin-yang situation — speaking for their focuses and scale of production, and hopefully not at all of quality. Entering a limited release this month is A Space Program, a title described by one (very positive) review as a “mockumentary / performance piece [that’s] sci-fi by way of Wes Anderson.” The cinematic condensing of Van Neistat and Tom Sachs‘ New York installation earned some good buzz upon hitting SXSW last year, and its trailer (via Apple) does a fine job of raising questions as to where, exactly, the line between reality and presentation rests.
Also entering a limited release this spring, albeit on a much bigger scale (ar ar ar), is A Beautiful Planet, the IMAX-presented, Jennifer Lawrence-narrated documentary that looks upon the earth with footage captured by the International Space Station. It might turn out to be little more than space porn — but if seen in an optimal IMAX 3D presentation,...

"It's a giant universe out there - there's lots of stars, and lots of planets, but there's no where like Earth." Indeed. So take care of this beautiful planet. IMAX has debuted a wonderful, uplifting trailer for a new documentary called A Beautiful Planet, directed by Toni Myers, all about how amazing this planet we call Earth is as seen from space. There's a cheesy song that plays with it, and Jennifer Lawrence narrates some of it, but mostly you should watch this just for all the footage of Earth. "From space, Earth blazes at night with the electric intensity of human expansion — a direct visualization of our changing world. But it is within our power to protect the planet." We can care more. What a mesmerizing documentary. Watch below. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for IMAX's documentary A Beautiful Planet, from IMAX's YouTube: A Beautiful Planet is a breathtaking portrait of Earth from space,...
