Quotes

  • Gus : You know, sometimes comets are thought to be lost. And then they come back into orbit, and when they're calculated, scientists find they weren't lost at all. They're... they're found.

Molly : Can you just stop for one second? I wish I could freeze these moment so that I'd never forget it.

    Gus : Me, too.

  • Molly : Gus, you worked on all these amazing things, and you obviously loved it. How could you just leave California behind and come to New Orleans?

Gus : You know, people change, Molly. Things happen in your life sometimes, you know, that really affect your...

    [alarms rings and interrupts Gus]

  • Molly : I brought flowers.

    Baptiste : I got flowers.

Molly : You got plastic flowers. And can we be straight for a second? Customers hate them. I hate them. And if you were being completely honest, you'd say you hate them too.

  • Gus : Hey, that's a really nice ring you got there with the rubies.

    Molly : Oh, this one?

Gus : Yeah. You mind if I take a look at it?

Molly : Um, it's got half the stones missing.

Gus : So they are. But still, it's a really nice ring, and there's plenty of stones still in it.

Molly : It's my great-aunt's. Was. She had really great taste.

Gus : She certainly did. It's uh... It's an old Victorian setting. We rarely see these nowadays.

Molly : [Molly takes off the ring and points it to Gus]  50$.

    Gus : I-I can't... I can't pay that.

Molly : Well, it's worth at least 50$. I mean, I kind of need the money.

    [Gus opening cash drawer]

Gus : [Gus counting the money]  Here.

Molly : [Molly takes and counts the money]  200$? No, I said 50$.

Gus : It's worth more than 50$ and I couldn't possibly pay you less.

Molly : I've lived here for almost three years. That's two cars, four apartments, three boyfriends and 360,000 strangers, And that is just one of the nicest things that anybody's done for me.

    Gus : I don't know about that.

    Molly : Thank you.

Gus : Wha... Um, I'm sorry. What was your name again?

Molly : Molly. I'm Molly. Thanks again.

Gus : Yeah, yeah, yeah Molly. Have a good day.

    Molly : Yeah, you too.

  • Molly : [answering Roger on her phone]  Don't call me. Don't write me. Don't e-mail me, text me, smoke-signal me. I do not want to talk to one more man who's just going to disappoint me. Goodbye.

  • Gus : [fixing Molly's car]  Try it now.

Molly : [engine starts working]  How'd you do that?

Gus : Uh, I got a knack for mechanical things.

Molly : Well, that would really come in handy around me.

Gus : I just wanted to say thanks for stopping me. I haven't really dated in a while. You know, with, uh, my work and everything.

Molly : Sure. I've been busy too. So your shop's doing great, huh?

    Gus : My shop?

Molly : Your jewelry shop, where you work. Where we...

Gus : Oh, no! Uh, yeah. I mean, I-I work there. It's not... It's not my shop. The owners lived next door to my parents before they died. I just... I knew them when I was growing up around here.

    Molly : Oh.

Gus : Do you want to go someplace else?

    Molly : Sure.

  • Gus : [pointing to the stars]  You see it now? Right there. Tell me. Can you see it? Can you see that?

Molly : It's a... teapot. No! No, it's a baby carriage. I see it. It's the... the wheel's right there, and then the... the bent part there, that's the... the buggy. Am I right?

Gus : Uh, no, but that's a great try. Uh, technically, it's the constellation Orion. It's, um, right ascension five hours, and then declination five degrees, Orion's Belt.

Molly : That's very technical stuff. Where... where did you come up with that?

Gus : Or it can be a baby carriage. I'm totally open to that interpretation.

Molly : It looks like a baby carriage!

Gus : I could, yeah, kind of. Not really.

    Molly : Making stuff up.

  • Molly : So, hey, if the... if the universe is your thing, how come you're at the jewelry store?

Gus : Oh, that's a good question. Um, well, I used to work at Mount Wilson Observatory. It's in California. I don't know. Before that, NASA. Got my degree at Caltech.

Molly : So, why aren't you doing that?

Gus : Well, I, uh... Science is all around us, right? Like a diamond. And you look into a diamond, and it's... it's like its own little galaxy. Like, inside, the way light refracts through it in the right setting, it can be... gorgeous. Does this sound idiotic? I feel like I'm sounding idiotic.

Molly : Not when you say it.

Gus : Yeah. Oh! Look, look, look. See?

Molly : Oh, whoa! A shooting star!

Gus : Yes, yes! That's-that's right. Technically it's meteors, but yes, it's a shooting star. It's amazing, isn't it? The way that debris and dust from space could look so beautiful as it's burning up in the earth's atmosphere?

    Molly : It is.

  • Molly : [looking at the flowers sent by Gus]  It's surprising. I wasn't even sure that he... I'm just not sure how I should feel about this.

Baptiste : Behind the mountain, there are mountains.

Molly : I don't know what that means.

Baptiste : Well, there's always more than meets the eye. A man sent you flowers. He wants you to know he likes you.

  • Gus : [on the balcony adjusting his telescope]  Okay, look right there

[pointing a comet in the sky]

Gus : . What do you see?

Molly : Oh. Is it a... meteor?

Gus : [looking through telescope]  No. That is... Look right here.

    [Molly's looking with telescope]

Gus : That is a comet. It's frozen gas and ice and dust that gets pulled by the gravity of the sun, but it's really the... the tail of it that distinguishes...

    [Molly smiling at Gus]

    Gus : What?

Molly : When you talk about this, it's... home. This is home to you.

Gus : I mean, it's kind of home for everybody. Really. where it all started. All of the elements in the universe, they... they all come from the stars, you know? It's-it's what makes us up. It's, um, the calcium in our bones and the iron in our blood. It was all born with the explosion that... that started it all. Like, you know, without the stars, we wouldn't have anything that we know today. Not you. Not me.

    Molly : We're stardust.

Gus : Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, approximately 93%. Yeah.

  • Molly : My class! Oh, gosh, I'm late. I'm dead! My plan. I'm sorry. I'm an idiot. You know, I have this big presentation tonight. I got to go.

[gets out of the house in a rush, then runs back to Gus and kisses him]

    Molly : Call me.

[takes Gus' cosmology book and gets out of the house again]

Gus : [while Molly is getting down the stairs]  I will! Hey, I will! I will! I won't forget!

Molly : [closing the door]  Bye!

Gus : [talking to himself]  I won't forget.

    [recording his voice]

Gus : That's it. Call Molly. Don't forget. Do not forget her. Do not forget Molly Branford. Set a date to tell her everything. No matter what.
