Hyakunin-giri Kyoso, Japanese for Hundred Man Killing Contest, was a contest between two Japanese Army officers in December of 1937 during the Japanese invasion of China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Toshiaki Mukai made a wager with fellow officer Tsuyoshi Noda to see who could kill 100 people with a sword in the fastest amount of time. The two officers and the Japanese government claimed the people they killed were Chinese soldiers whom they fought in honorable hand-to-hand combat, however Chinese officials had evidence the people they killed were unarmed prisoners and civilians, most historians concur with this finding. In fact in the weeks following the contest Japanese soldiers, including Mukai and Noda, were responsible for the rape and mass murder of an estimated 200,000 Chinese POW's and civilians in the Nanjing region which became known as the Nanjing Massacre. Following Japan's defeat and surrender in World War II documents of the contest and killings were discovered and turned over to a international military tribunal who issued warrants for the arrest of Mukai and Noda. Both men were arrested by the U.S. Army in 1947, they were extradited to China and tried by the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal. Mukai and Noda were tried along with Gunkichi Tanaka, a Japanese Army captain who personally killed over 300 Chinese POW's and civilians with his sword. All three men were found guilty of multiple counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity and were executed by firing squad on January 28, 1948.

Jet comments that the katana icon is the "neckbeard weapon of choice". Bell asks her what a neckbeard is and she replies "the kind of guy who lurks on Reddit all day when he's not gaming, fingers coated in a faint layer of Cheeto dust". She is referring to a character from the classic South Park episode Make Love, Not Warcraft (2006) who was the main antagonist of the episode, he was a grown man with no life that spent every waking moment on his computer playing World of Warcraft (2005) and trolling the internet, he had a ponytail, an unkempt neck beard and was constantly eating Cheetos with his keyboard propped on his oversized belly. This character came to be known as Neckbeard and in popular and online culture the term neckbeard was used to refer to any adult man who is introverted, socially awkward and spends his entire life online and in video games, often harassing and/or trolling people online and in games.
