ABC Studios has shipped off its 2019 Emmy Fyc mailer to members of the TV academy, with DVDs of such highly watched shows as “Black-ish,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “How to Get Away with Murder,” “American Housewife” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” contained in the navy blue package. After earning three consecutive Best Comedy Series nominations for “Black-ish” (2016-18), the alphabet network is hoping that its family-favorite program starring Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross will hear its name called yet again this July.
Of note, ABC’s popular “Live In Front of a Studio Audience” was not included in the mailer as it aired after the shipping date, but academy members can still watch the special (and all other programs) at the network’s Fyc screening site. Since ABC Studios routinely produces shows that air on other networks, voters are also presented with discs of “Criminal Minds” (CBS), “Grown-ish” (Freeform), “Marvel’s...

Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz are exiting Magical Elves, the production company behind hits such as Top Chef, Project Runway and Nailed It, which they co-founded in 2001. The Emmy-winning producers will remain partners and are expected to launch a new company as as independent producers. Meanwhile, Magical Elves will remain a part of Tinopolis USA, the U.S. subsidiary of UK-based Tinopolis Group, which acquired the company in 2014.
It is a common practice for the founders of a successful production company that sells to leave when the five-year post-acquisition period, during which they are required to stay on, is up, and they go on to launch a new company with the goal of building it and eventually selling it.
Their departure comes as the owners of Tinopolis, which owns a slew of British production companies including Question Time producer Mentorn and Mums Make Porn producer Firecracker Films, are once again keen to sell.

TNT hasn’t given up on its Tales From the Crypt revival – and neither should we.
That’s according to Turner Entertainment’s chief creative officer Kevin Reilly, who touched on the beleaguered project during a recent interview with Deadline. Both Reilly and TNT’s top brass still have their eye on the IP, it seems, but are still waiting for the legal drama to blow over before making another approach to land the rights. Alas, a Tales From the Crypt reboot is still unlikely, as the EC Comics property has been sold to multiple producers and creators since its inception, and while providing a status report to Deadline, Kevin Reilly made no bones about his frustration.
It’s been fun with lawyers, it’s been really fun. We did not know from the get-go or else we would not have announced it and made a big deal out of it.

Television is a fast-paced business, where a show can be written, developed, ordered, cast, produced, and aired all within the course of a year. But sometimes, executives get ahead of themselves and shows are announced prematurely, or circumstances change, forcing delay.
IndieWire combed through some high-profile TV announcements from the past few years that haven’t yet seen the light of day, and asked their status. Some are still in the works; some are still “in development,” which could be code for “we don’t want to admit yet that this show is dead”; and some have quietly faded away.

Seems like a good marriage. On one side of the aisle: M. Night Shyamalan, a filmmaker who made a name for himself by crafting spooky, grown up tales like The Sixth Sense, Signs, and The Village. On the other end, walking down the aisle with a lovely veil on, a brand new take on Tales From The Crypt.
We've known that Shyamalan was working on relaunching the series, which began its life as a comic book in the 1950s, became a film in 1972, then found new life as an anthology horror show on HBO in 1989. The weekly series, hosted by a decrepit corpse known as The Cryptkeeper, told a different, scary story every week. TNT is moving ahead with its "Tales From the Crypt" reboot, announcing on Thursday it has ordered a ten-episode first season of the anthology series as part of a block of programming overseen by M. Night Shyamalan.
The network also confirmed the new take will also boast a "newly reinvented" Crypt Keeper, something that was in doubt at one point. The horror block, which will feature short and longform stories, will launch on the network sometime next year.
The network also greenlit seasonal anthology pilot "Time of Death". If there's one element Tales from the Crypt fans are attached to from the original HBO series, it's John Kassir's cackling, pun-happy Crypt Keeper. Which is why I suspect many fans will be disappointed by today's news that TNT is "reinventing" the character for their M. Night Shyamalan-produced reboot, which the network has now officially ordered for a 10-episode run. In short: HBO's incarnation of the Crypt Keeper -- and by extension Kassir -- will not be returning for the new series. As Kassir pointed out to me back in January, the character is in fact owned by the original series' producers -- a group that includes Joel Silver, Robert Zemeckis, Walter Hill, Richard Donner and David Giler -- and the decision of whether or not to grant the rights is up to them. The question is: were TNT and Shyamalan simply unable/unwilling to retain the rights,...

M. Night Shyamalan’s reboot of the classic anthology series Tales From The Crypt is officially moving forward at TNT, with the network picking up the series for a 10-episode first season. Based on the original EC Comics series, the new show will be hosted by “a newly reinvented Crypt Keeper,” with Shyamalan acting as executive producer.
Horror fans have more to be excited about, however, because the episode order for Tales From The Crypt wasn’t the only move TNT made today in cementing its genre cred. It's sort of a bummer to me that the two films at the forefront of this year's Best Documentary Oscar race — Laura Poitros' "Citizenfour" and Steve James' "Life Itself," each of which I like just fine — can't really hold a candle to some of the very best films in contention, whether "The Overnighters" (my favorite), "Tales of the Grim Sleeper," "Virunga," etc. Alas, that's how it's shaping up. And that's just, like, my opinion, man. But I get it. We must protect whistleblowers and the spotlight of the Oscars is important for this kind of thing, yada, yada, yada. (Not that there isn't a ton of nuance in this situation to be chewed on no matter what side of the political line you fall on.) But... Anyway, Poitros' film won the International Documentary Association's Best Feature prize Friday night, out of a field of nominees that included the aforementioned "Grim...

Wednesday morning, the International Documentary Association announced its nominees and select winners for the 2014 Ida Awards, an annual tribute to the best-of-the-best of non-fiction film and television. Pertinent to award season are the Best Feature contenders, including Lara Poitras’ recent hit “Citizenfour” “Point and Shoot,” an American filmmaker’s look inside Libyan prisons, “Finding Vivian Maier,” a portrait of the posthumously legendary photographer, Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado's artist profile “The Salt of the Earth,” and Nick Broomfield’s verite serial killer investigation, “Tales of the Grim Sleeper.” Unlike years past, all five films look like viable Best Documentary candidates come Oscar time, making the Ida Awards even more influential. Past winners include “The Square” (2013), “Searching for Sugar Man” (2012), “Nostalgia for Light” (2011), and “Waste Land” (2010). For his work founding the Sundance Institute and producing documentaries through Sundance Productions, the Ida Awards will honor Robert Redford with its career achievement award.

It’s interesting to watch Green Arrow thrive on television in ways he could only envy in the comics. After being a second string character for much of his career, he seemed to work well first on Smallville, and now on his own series, Arrow. The problem, though, with being a B-lister for decades is that his rogues’ gallery is woefully weak and therefore the show’s producers have to dip into the rest of the DC mythos to fill out his world.
The show’s third season gets underway shortly and Warner Home Entertainment has recently released Arrow: The Complete Second Season in a nice box set. Here, we can review all 23 episodes to see how things have evolved as Oliver Queen goes from vigilante to hero while his allies grow in number.

Showtime announced it is canceling the acclaimed comedy starring Edie Falco after its seventh season, which begins filming this week.
"Edie is one of our finest actresses. We are so honored to have had her on the network. She creates indelible characters and Nurse Jackie Peyton is no exception," said Showtime President David Nevins in a statement.
"I know this final season will bring her story to a close that will satisfy the ever-growing number of loyal viewers who have been entranced and, at times, appalled by Jackie through the years. The theme for this year’s Melbourne Underground Film Festival is “Evolve Or Die,” so thank God that after 15 years, the fest has decided to evolve rather than kick the proverbial bucket.
What does “evolution” look like for Muff? For starters, this year is a much more stripped down festival. It runs Sept. 12 – 19 at a single location — The Backlot Studios.
Muff usually features a healthy retrospective section, but they decided to spin that off into a separate event that will run in a month or two. Instead, Muff 15 is all about new cinema, with an even stronger focus on Down Under cinema.
Opening Night: Start Options Exit was originally conceived by local co-directors Chris Mitchell and Yoav Lester as a web series, but was subsequently edited together as this outrageous comedy about a pair of degenerates stumbling through the seedy underbelly of Melbourne.
Closing Night: Acclaimed Melbourne cult filmmaker Stuart Simpson...

"True Blood" is officially over, and we're currently covered in a combination of tears, comfort food, and Eric Northman posters. HBO's long-standing vampire drama went all out for its finale season, by which we mean they killed off half the population of Bon Temps -- including Bill Compton. Despite Sookie Stackhouse's fairy feels, Bill met his maker in the"True Blood" final moments -- but his demise is just the tip of the iceberg.
Ready to take a walk down memory lane and revisit this season's goriest, most fangtastic deaths? Well, we've rounded up every obliteration for you to look back on (with GIFs, of course!), so go ahead and pour one out for our fallen homies.
Name: Tara Thornton Time of Death: Season 7, Episode 1 ("Jesus Gonna Be Here") If Tara's untimely doom seems somewhat familiar, it's probably because she died back in Season 4 and turned into a vampire.

Jennifer Lynch directs another impressive episode of Teen Wolf this week. Here's Ron's review of Perishable...
This review contains spoilers.
4.9 Perishable
With a show like Teen Wolf, you can never be sure who is dead and who isn't dead. Gerard took werewolf claws to the belly, crawled off, and somehow reappeared for a few episodes in season 3A when Allison needed a spiritual adviser. Kate Argent died and returned as a were-jaguar. Scott, Stiles, and Allison all returned from the dead once upon a time, though Allison returned to re-death in season 3B. Is it all that surprising that Parrish gets burned alive by Lou Ferrigno Jr.'s Deputy Haigh in the opening moments of Perishable before returning, covered in ashes but otherwise unharmed? Not so much.
However, what was surprising was the return of Meredith Walker, everyone's favorite creepy Banshee, as a crucial character in the Teen Wolf universe.

Do we really know who the Benefactor is now in Teen Wolf? Here's Ron's review of Time Of Death...
This review contains spoilers.
4.8 Time Of Death
One of the highlights of Teen Wolf is the way it has embraced its meta-ness. It's a show about teenage werewolves on a channel that used to be called Music Television, so it makes sense that Teen Wolf would both poke fun at its history (by having Baby Derek be a teenage werewolf basketball player) and at MTV (by making music a character in the series, constantly working in tunes, and even having musical guests on its after-show). There's a knowing awareness of the fact that it's a television show, not in terms of the performances, but in terms of some of the written content. Stiles is a great example of this, since he's always making commentary that winks at the fourth wall, but...

Teen Wolf has created a general grey area when it comes to death. In “Time of Death,” fans watch for the second time as Scott (Tyler Posey) takes his turn advancing the narrative by faking his own. Last season, he was one of three characters who temporarily died to ascertain the location of the Nemeton in order to save innocent lives and take down the Darach. On tonight’s episode, the plan was more or less the same – draw out the benefactor and save all the local supernaturals who haven’t already been crossed off the deadpool list.
This episode had a lot of layers to it. Not only did viewers get to experience the present scenario, but they also got a peak into the lead-up, along with a few pressing peripheral plot points – Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) learning to adapt to a life without the benefit of his supernatural assets,...

As if the fourth season of Teen Wolf weren’t already the show’s most dangerous (do you even have nails left to bite at this point?), the stakes are getting even higher.
On tonight’s episode “Time of Death,” there’s a little too much time spent around dead bodies—especially one who looks quite a bit like Scott (Tyler Posey). But that’s to be expected, since Argent (Jr Bourne), Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) and Scott have a plan to draw out the Benefactor, the mysterious, money-dishing, assassin-hiring enigma who has put all of Beacon Hills’ supernatural beings on high alert.

Code Black – by definition, this term marks a nightmare scenario in hospitals signifying an overflowing waiting room, but Ryan McGarry’s documentary of the same name is an enlightening message in a time where politicians are constantly debating the likes of Obamacare and medicinal legalities. While you may whine about your monotonous 9-5 desk job, complaining about trivial nuisances like working an extra hour or being overlooked by bosses, why don’t you try being a doctor? Our jobs don’t hold people’s lives in the balance, they can’t cause tragedy with the simplest miscalculation, and they certainly don’t include “pronouncing death” on the job report – something Dr. McGarry offers an unprecedented taste of with his powerful, riveting documentary. These are the brave soldiers fighting on Us soil to save lives, preserve families, and defeat common enemies, yet governmental procedures are making their jobs tougher and less fulfilling.

Via his official Twitter, Arrow producer Marc Guggenheim announced what was supposed to be a "special announcement" of episode 19 of season 2 is titled "The Man Under the Hood." While normally this title would seem to be referring to Oliver, we've been given some hints that it might be something more. A few months ago, star Stephen Amell gave us a couple of hints, including "Oliver isn't the first vigilante" and "Not all hoods are green." With episode twenty being titled "Seeing Red," I believe Batman frenemy Red Hood might be making an appearance, which is possible. Then again, if that is indeed Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad promo, could The CW actually be using the early, pre-acid Red Hood version of the Joker? Your thoughts? Not long after their formation less than four years ago in São Paulo, Brazil, female thrash trio Nervosa have been steadily rising in the international metal community. Their first single “Time of Death” won them critical praise and quickly led to high-profile gigs, and their 2012 debut video “Masked Betrayer” became a runaway hit on YouTube in a matter of days. This week, the team of Fernanda Lira (bass & vocals), founder Prika Amaral (guitars) and Pitchu Ferraz (drums) have unleashed their first full-length album Victim of Yourself on Napalm Records, and it's one of the meanest, darkest and most uncompromising metal releases to emerge from the Brazilian metal movement, as well as the worldwide thrash revival. Speed and intensity are clearly the main focus of Victim, and toward that goal the band maintains a fairly consistent formula from track to track, modulating that power instead with rapidly-shifting tempos driven by the...

This week's Arrow had action, character growth and a good balance between past and present. Here's Caroline's review...
This review contains spoilers.
2.15 The Promise
Last season, The Odyssey gave us an hour almost entirely made up of flashbacks, with the usual favouring of present day action flipped and used to explore more of Oliver’s past. This episode, The Promise, did the same thing and, although I didn’t hate last year’s example, this was far superior in terms of character development, action and just being a really good hour of Arrow. This big cliffhanger set up us up nicely, of course, with Slade cosying up to Moira and shooting Ollie ominous looks across his living room, and the escalating tension sewn throughout these snippets made them almost as fantastic to watch as seeing exactly what happened to their friendship back in the day.

(Cbr) In a preview video posted last week by The CW, "Arrow" executive producer Marc Guggenheim stated the following about this week's installment, "The Promise": "This is the biggest episode we've ever done on the show to date." Those are very bold words from the veteran TV and comic book writer, and Cbr News spoke with him to find out exactly what he's so enthused about in the flashback-heavy episode written by Jake Coburn and Ben Sokolowski. Following the ending of last week's "Time of Death," which saw Oliver (Stephen Amell) discover that Slade (played by Manu Bennett and better known to DC Comics fans as Deathstroke) was not only alive but in Starling City and meeting with Moira (Susanna Thompson), "The Promise" is set to detail exactly how things went so terribly wrong between Oliver and Slade on Lian Yu. "Slade's presence just changes everything," Guggenheim told Cbr.
