Hey Lrm Weekenders, we've hit double-digits! This week we're taking a dive into the odd career of martial artist-action star Steven Seagal, exploring the creations of Hellboy's Mike Mignola, and reaching back to the amazing, epic sci-fi films of the 80s. But first, in our editorial we explain why WB needs to stick a knife between the ribs of the Dceu and dump it into the nearest body of water.

Netflix mostly seems to be getting a bunch of buzz for their stellar live-action TV programming, and their burgeoning original film slate. However, one aspect of their original shows that is often overlooked is their anime. From shows like Ajin: Demi-Human to Little Witch Academia, they have a growing slate of originals that’s sure to make the folks over at Crunchyroll at least a little bit jealous.
Apparently, the streaming service has been stockpiling trailers, because they just dropped four trailers for upcoming anime series Fate/Apocrypha, Kakegurui, A.I.C.O. -Incarnation-, and Devilman crybaby.

This is another step in Netflix's plan to bring more anime content to their service.
"We expect to grow anime viewing, here in Japan and the rest of the world as we continue to invest in high-quality content," Greg Peters, Netflix's chief product officer told CNET.

Beyond Studio Ghibli, a wave of directors and artists ensure that the future’s bright for animation in Japan, Ryan writes...
At its best, anime is diverse, vibrant, unfettered and unpredictable. Look through the history of Japanese animation, and you’ll find stories about baseball, cooking, friendly ghosts, ancient myths, dog detectives and robot cats from the future. You’ll find sci-fi and horror, fantasy and comedy, erotica and historical drama. Just about every country on the planet produces animation of some kind; few broach subjects as varied as the Japanese.
See related Katee Sackhoff interview: Battlestar, Haunting, Statham
In recent years, however, anime has faced threats from multiple angles. First, there’s the threat that will catch up with all of us eventually: time itself. In 2010, Japan lost one of its great storytellers, Satoshi Kon, who made such stunning animated movies as Perfect Blue (one of...

There's an international theme to this week's Crowdfunding Friday, with a captivating anime project from Japan among the selection...
It's hard to believe now, but there was a time when anime and manga were extremely difficult to get hold of. Japanese culture was a distant, exotic and exciting thing in the 80s and 90s, occasionally glimpsed on children's television or in magazines, but largely on the cultural periphery , at least in the UK. The arrival of Akira and Manga Entertainment began the trickle of Japanese comics and animation into the UK, but the internet has since unleashed a flood.
All of this is a means of introducing the first offering in this week's crowdfunding selection - 20-minute film from the Japanese animation house, Studio Trigger. It's proof that, not only does the internet give us ready aspect to all sorts of wonderful things from all over the world,...

This original anime short film, Little Witch Academia, might just be the best 26-minutes of your day. It's a beautifully animated, action-packed film that you're sure to love. It's a must watch, so please, please take the time to check it out when you get a chance!
The story follows young Akko who "enrolls in magic school to be just like her idol, Shiny Chariot. But can she prove herself to the other witches in her class—and learn to believe in her own magic?" It's kind of like Harry Potter set in the world of anime, and it's packed full of wonderful characters.
The film was developed by an indie anime studio called Trigger, and was directed by Yoh Yoshinari from a script written by Masahiko Otsuka. After watching this, I can't wait to see this team start making feature films! As for this short, it needs to be turned into a series!
