Purported Horror-Comedy is Just a Horror
jfrentzen-942-20421119 January 2020
In order to be even minutely successful, horror comedies should exhibit some modicum of humor. Not so with SADOMANIAC, a laugh-less pastiche of rape-revenge clichés mixed with a mad-killer-on-the-loose gore film. A pitiful group of sex-starved serial rapists calling themselves the Wolf Pack sit around making brainless sexist jokes while planning the next drunk party, where they plan to gang rape a new set of spectacularly misshapen, obese local Trenton, New Jersey women. Meanwhile, a killer wearing a papier-mâché head mask resembling an inverted anus pops up from time to time, armed with an electric drill for a penis to rape the rapists. What sort of audience does this appeal to? Wanna-be rapists that need conversion therapy, I suspect. I counted one, maybe two jokes that get repeated several times, delivered by comedic non-actors who try desperately, without success to turn this ugly mess into a lighthearted farce. Technical credits are less than mediocre.

Talk about misleading

Ok, the cover to me says gory slasher. The trailers say Rated R for "Pervasive strong horror violence and gore." (I have a different DVD edition of Sodomaniac than what is pictured here, with a gorier, grimier cover). Never mind all the phony reviews you can find online for this film (its present imdb rating is nearly as high as From Beyond!). I think this was supposed to be a horror comedy, only it is 100% devoid of laughs, and there's very little gore to speak of. What you're left with is a whole lot of "bro talk," with f-bombs being dropped every other word. This movie also follows the modern horror trope where all the main characters are unlikeable (I guess they ARE serial date rapists).

A group of guys calling themselves The Wolf Pack drug young ladies and have their way with them. Someone is killing them one by one with a giant ass on their head.

I enjoyed the twist ending, and that's all I'll give it. Otherwise, it's actually fairly insufferable. Oh yeah, no way this movie got rated R by the MPAA (more misleading), there is graphic sexual imagery in it. And the only thing pervasive is the level of obnoxiousness. The closing song is a Ramones cover, and NO Ramone is credited! Is that a hush-hush kind of deal?
