Exclusive: After more than a decade, Silver Lining Entertainment, the management and production company founded by veterans Jeff Golenberg and Sam Maydew, is dissolving.
Golenberg and fellow Silver Lining partner Jason Shapiro have launched Strand Entertainment, a management and production company based in Los Angeles, bringing most of Silver Lining’s managers with them. Maydew has formed his own management/production company, 734 Media. The split we hear was amicable, with the former partners’ paths diverging, a process accelerated by the pandemic.
Joining Golenberg and Shapiro in their new venture are longtime colleagues Tarik Kanafani, Emily Rifanburg, Kaelyn Hutchins, and Aileen Lewis. Jeff’s brother, manager/producer Rob Golenberg, who was a partner at Silver Lining, has formed GoGi Entertainment, a new production company focused on international productions, with his former assistant Paulina Giron Velasquez. He also plans to continue to work alongside the Strand principals and their joint production entity,...

Sofia Coppola, whose awards contender “Priscilla” is now in theaters, is just one of several filmmakers whose parents were already major names in the industry. Both her father, Francis Ford Coppola, and her mother, Eleanor Coppola, are directors, as is her brother Roman.
Here are some of the most notable second-generation directors in Hollywood, including Jason Reitman, Rob Reiner, Mario Van Peebles and Colin Hanks.
We’re also a big fan of Francesca Scorsese’s TikTok videos with her dad, Martin Scorsese, especially the one where he auditions the family dog.

Imagine Entertainment is in negotiations to sell a majority stake in the production banner headed by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer to London-based investment firm Centricus Asset Management Ltd.
The talks were first reported by the The Wall Street Journal. The negotiations are accelerating but a source close to the situation cautions there’s still no certainty that a deal will come to fruition. The discussions under way with Centricus are said to value Imagine Entertainment, one of Hollywood’s largest independent content producers, at about $600 million to $700 million. The company has been in the hunt for a capital infusion through an equity sale for some months.
Centricus has $35 billion in assets under management and is known for investing in financial services, technology, infrastructure, media and sports businesses. The company was co-founded in 2016 by Nizar Al-Bassam and Dalinc Ariburnu. Josh Purvis serves as CEO and COO.
Imagine Entertainment declined to comment.

Bryce Dallas Howard is set to direct and produce Walt Disney Studios’ reboot of “Flight of the Navigator,” which reimagines the original 1986 film with a female lead. The new movie, which marks Howard’s feature directorial debut, is slated to premiere exclusively on Disney Plus.
The original “Flight of the Navigator” was directed by Randal Kleiser and written by Mark H. Baker, Michael Burton and Matt MacManus. The family sci-fi adventure film followed 12-year-old David Freeman (Joey Cramer), who goes unconscious after falling down in the woods, only to get abducted by an alien spaceship that transports him from 1978 to 1986. David spends the film trying to reunite with his family, but gets entangled with the police and NASA along the way.

Bryce Dallas Howard is set to direct and produce a reboot of “Flight of the Navigator” for Disney+, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
The film will reimagine the story with a female lead. The 1986 original told the story of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by a UFO and reappears eight years later at the same age, with no recollection of what happened. Randal Kleiser (“Grease”) directed, and it was written by Mark H. Baker, Michael Burton and Matt MacManus.
The film, although distributed by Disney, was produced and financed by now defunct company Producers Sales Organization. Disney tried to remake the film in 2009 with Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly attached to pen the script, but Disney lost the rights to Lionsgate in the 2010s. However, the studio couldn’t get the project off the ground, so it reverted back to Disney.
John Swartz and Justin Springer are also producing.

Imagine Entertainment, the production banner run by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, has been the subject of renewed acquisition talks in recent weeks, multiple sources told Variety.
Investors and potential buyers include an undisclosed sovereign wealth fund from the Middle East, which has been quietly exploring American media investments of late. Also kicking the tires on Imagine are international banks and a domestic private equity firm, according to two individuals familiar with the discussions. The current valuation being floated is between $800 million and $825 million, sources added.
An Imagine Entertainment spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.
The interest in Imagine comes at a time when the media sector is rife with M&a and consolidation activity. In addition to top-level transactions like the pending combination of WarnerMedia and Discovery and Amazon’s nearly $9 billion purchase of MGM, companies like Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and LeBron James’ Spring Hill Entertainment...

Apple Original Films has greenlit a documentary feature about the life of jazz great Louis Armstrong titled “Black & Blues” that Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Documentaries will produce.
“Black & Blues: The Colorful Ballad of Louis Armstrong” will be executive produced by Grazer and Howard and directed by Emmy nominee Sacha Jenkins (“Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men”). The film is being produced under Apple’s first-look agreement with Imagine Documentaries.
“Black & Blues” offers a definitive look at the master musician Louis Armstrong’s life and legacy as a founding father of jazz, the first pop star, and a cultural ambassador of the United States. Though Armstrong was loved by millions worldwide, he was often mischaracterized for not doing enough to support the Civil Rights Movement. But his fight for social justice was fueled by his celebrity and his willingness to break his silence on issues of segregation and patriotism.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.
The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.
This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

“Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds,” the upcoming documentary from acclaimed film director Werner Herzog, is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on November 13. The streaming service revealed the trailer for the project on Friday morning.
Per Apple, “Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds” takes viewers on an extraordinary journey to discover how shooting stars, meteorites, and deep impacts have focused the human imagination on other realms and worlds, and on our past and our future. The upcoming documentary hails from Herzog and volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer, who previously appeared in Herzog’s “Encounters at the End of the World” and “Into the Inferno.”
Although IndieWire’s David Ehrlich had mixed feelings about “Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds” in his grade B- review of the documentary in September, he nonetheless praised Herzog’s work on the project.

Per the streaming service, the event series will feature interviews with the four legends, “who will revisit their iconic modeling careers and collective disruption of the ’90s fashion scene, which continues to reverberate today.”
See above for a photo of the quartet at the finale of Gianni Versace’s fall show in 1991, mouthing the lyrics to “Freedom! ’90,” a shoutout to the David Fincher-directed, George Michael video in which the four starred.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of tonight’s Power Book II: Ghost series premiere on Starz.
“The man who killed James St. Patrick is (long pause) Tommy Egan,” declares Naturi Naughton’s Tasha St. Patrick to a dubious courtroom just before one more twist ended the debut of Power Book II: Ghost today.
Having premiered early this morning on the Starz App and just now on the premium cabler itself, the first spinoff in the Courtney Kemp created franchise was part throwback to mother show Power itself and a whole lot of leap into the future, literally and figuratively. With Michael Rainey Jr’s Tariq St. Patrick trying to get his mother out of jail for the murder of his father that she did not commit, Cliff “Method Man” Smith’s high-flying defense lawyer Davis Maclean and Mary J. Blige’s Queenpin Monet are finally introduced into the Powerverse.

The Perrys are still adjusting to life after Scott's death on Council of Dads Season 1 Episode 3.
Their lives have changed forever, and they're still trying to figure out how their "new normal" is going to look.
It's not exactly the best time for a company to make an offer on The Crab Shack.
The Crab Shack was Scott's dream. He put time and effort into building it into what it is.
And it's the place where he proposed to Robin.
Her decision to sell The Crab Shack to Gladwell was not an easy one. They have memories there. All of the Perry children were upset by the idea of getting rid of The Crab Shack.
I wish Dad was still here.

Gigi Hadid has confirmed rumors that she and longtime boyfriend Zayn Malik are expecting a baby, and Jimmy Fallon couldn’t resist giving the model some parenting advice when she paid him a virtual visit Thursday on “The Tonight Show.”
Fallon couldn’t help but gush over the news and offer up some wisdom he’s gleaned from raising his own two daughters, Winnie Rose and Frances Cole.
“I will tell you this. Tons of people will give you advice like ‘Oh they grow up so fast, enjoy it,’ and I don’t want to be that person because they are kind of right,” he said. “Don’t overdo it, but just be present for every part of it.”

Netflix has acquired a new documentary about the Boeing 737 Max disasters from noted filmmaker Rory Kennedy.
First developed as a series, the streaming giant will air the project as a feature documentary on a to-be-determined date. The film comes from Imagine Documentaries, an arm of Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment, run by Justin Wilkes and Sara Bernstein.
Kennedy and her producing partner Mark Bailey, an Emmy-nominated writer, will examine the global tragedy that began in March 2019 after two new aircrafts crashed within five months, killing 346 people.
Media reports have focused on improperly vetted design flaws and an internal push for production speed at Boeing, while numerous accounts have pointed to pilot inexperience and poor airmanship. In addition to the human cost, the doc will explore the reputation crisis the iconic company has faced in the aftermath.
The doc will rely on first-person accounts, to put a human face on the tragedies.

Do you ever wonder how actors feel when they see their significant other in a sex scene on screen? “True History of the Kelly Gang” director Justin Kurzel not only had to watch — he had to direct his wife Essie Davis in a scene with Charlie Hunnam.
“I have the privilege of being married to the director,” Davis told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven at the Toronto International Film Festival. “Charlie’s first day on set, and my second day on set, [Kurzel was like], ‘Okay, Essie, can you kneel down and Charlie can you stand there?’ I was like, ‘Hi, Charlie!'”
Kurzel added: “That was more confronting than I thought, actually, directing a scene of my wife giving fellatio to Charlie. Especially because we had just met as well, and we were still getting to know each other… and I’m sitting there and watching it on the split, I thought, wow,...

Documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy is teaming with Imagine Entertainment for a new series about the tragedy and subsequent scandal over the defunct Boeing 737-Max airplane, sources tell Variety.
Kennedy and her husband and producing partner, Emmy-nominated writer Mark Bailey, are teaming up with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s unscripted division at Imagine, run by Justin Wilkes and Sara Bernstein.
The project will examine the months since the tragedies, which caused global panic in March 2019 after two new aircrafts crashed within five months, killing 346 people. Much reporting has focused on improperly vetted design flaws and an internal push for speed at Boeing, while other accounts have pointed to pilot inexperience and poor airmanship. In addition to human cost, the reputation of the iconic company has been tarnished.

Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” has won the coveted People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
The honor positions the film for a potential Oscar run and bolsters its awards chances. That’s good news for Fox Searchlight, which must have been disappointed by the lackluster critical reception for the movie, a dark comedy set in the waning days of the Nazi Empire. Reviewers faulted the picture for delivering satire without the necessary sting, generally agreeing that “Jojo Rabbit” had stumbled out of the gate.
That no longer appears to be the case. Toronto’s top prize has uncanny predictive powers when it comes to selecting future Oscar winners. Last year’s winner, “Green Book,” went on to capture the Academy Award for Best Picture. Previous victors include “La La Land,” “Room,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and “The Imitation Game,” all of which went...

Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” has won the Grolsch People’s Choice Award as the audience’s favorite movie at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, Tiff announced on Sunday.
The black comedy deals with a 10-year-old German boy in World War II who idolizes Adolf Hitler but is forced to reconsider his ideals when he discovers that his mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their house. The film drew largely positive reviews at Tiff, but offended some who felt that Hitler and Nazis were not a laughing matter.
“Jojo” beat Todd Phillips’ “Joker” for the award, as well as less divisive films that included Marielle Heller’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and Fernando Meirelles’ “The Two Popes.”
Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” was the first runner-up, while Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” was second runner-up.

The Toronto Film Festival used to be an all-night event. Agents and producers would unveil their latest masterpieces, and then wait for the bids to come rolling in through sunrise. But the movie business has changed dramatically in the last five years. Many studios, burnt by costly acquisitions, are exercising more restraint at film festivals, opting to produce their indies internally.
And Toronto’s standing has changed too, as Telluride and Venice have eclipsed its position as the first stop on the awards season trail. Instead, rather than being a festival of discoveries, Toronto has become a destination to binge watch the latest fall movies that are about to explode. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and many movies got a boost from screening in Canada. But it does mean that if you’re premiering a movie at the festival, it’s much harder to get noticed.

Bleecker Street has won domestic rights to “Military Wives,” a feel-good comedy with Kristin Scott Thomas, Variety has confirmed.
The pact is one of the first to emerge from a slow market at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. “The Full Monty” filmmaker Peter Cattaneo directed “Military Wives,” the true story of a group of women who form a choir while their husbands are serving in Afghanistan. What starts as a diversion to distract themselves from negative thoughts about their spouses soon propels them to the center of a media frenzy and global movement.
In her review for Variety, Amy Nicholson called the film a “ballad to female unity,” adding, “though their husbands are on a dangerous six-month deployment, the women of this charmer about a camp choir find a reason to sing.”
Acquisitions out of Toronto are coming in dribs and drabs, with no megawatt sales of note...

Although many of the showcased films at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival already have distribution, buyers are clawing at the projects up for sale, and snapping up what’s left quicker than you can say Momofuku Noodle Bar.
On Friday, Bryce Dallas Howard’s documentary “Dads” sold to Apple TV Plus, which was the streamer’s first acquisition at the festival. IFC picked up Russell Crowe’s “The True History of the Kelly Gang” on Thursday. And we’re just getting started.
Ahead of the festival, many sales agents told TheWrap that they were bracing for the impact of the streaming companies, but said this year’s market was “healthy” and “robust.“
“It’s going to be an even playing field,” Kristen Konvitz, an agent in the international and independent film group at ICM Partners, said. “There...

You’d think modern-day societies would have moved past the old-fashioned narrative about fathers by now, especially with the heteronormative idea of family increasingly and rightfully shifting, challenging long-standing gender stereotypes. But many still view dads as absent, bread-winning authority figures who leave a child’s day-to-day needs and emotional growth to women. With her feature debut “Dads” (which was nabbed for distribution by Apple at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival), Bryce Dallas Howard sets out to topple various preconceived notions about paternity and portray the changing face of fatherhood.
The unremarkable nature of Howard’s film is based on the fact that its well-meaning plea — both parents ought to be equally involved in a child’s upbringing — is hardly groundbreaking. Thankfully, the actor-turned-filmmaker knows this. Avoiding a self-congratulatory tone accordingly, she eases into a lovely fête of fathers everywhere in 87 economic, often very funny minutes. In “Dads,” there are no...

Bryce Dallas Howard had to get a little sneaky to complete her feature directorial debut.
The Jurassic World actress, 38, follows in her famous father Ron Howard’s footsteps with Dads, which sees her step behind the camera to explore contemporary fatherhood in a documentary format.
Of course Bryce made a choice to include her own dad, who won an Oscar for directing 2001’s A Beautiful Mind. But to her surprise, he wasn’t so eager to take part, which led her to go behind his back.
“My dad straight up when I first pitched this, he was like, ‘Not with our family.

Apple TV Plus has acquired worldwide distribution rights to the Bryce Dallas Howard documentary “Dads,” ahead of its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
This is the streamer’s first acquisition of the festival. “Dads” is an exploration of contemporary fatherhood drawing on the testimonies of famous funnymen such as Judd Apatow, Will Smith, Jimmy Fallon, Neil Patrick Harris, Kenan Thompson, Jimmy Kimmel and Ken Jeong.
Their reflections are combined with portraits of non-celebrity dads from different parts of the world — Brazil, Japan and the United States — who are creating new models of patriarchy. “Dads” will premiere in the official documentary selection at Tiff on Monday.
One voice that Howard includes in her film is that of her own father, Ron Howard, who started his acting career as Opie, son of classic television father Andy Griffith. Interviewed by his daughter,...

Bryce Dallas Howard got some expert advice before directing an episode of “The Mandalorian,” straight from “Star Wars” creator George Lucas and her father, director Ron Howard, who helmed “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”
Howard, who was in the Variety Studio at the Toronto International Film Festival for her upcoming documentary “Dads,” took a minute to discuss her next directing gig on the Disney Plus “Star Wars” series.
Fortunately for Howard, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” was shooting on the same studio as “Solo.”
“After ‘Jurassic’ I stayed and shadowed my dad on ‘Solo,'” Howard revealed, there she learned a couple different things, “What he just kept saying again and again and again… ‘This is just the most incredible sandbox that you will ever get the opportunity to play in.'” The other big takeaway came directly from Lucas himself on the importance of collaboration to the ‘Star Wars’ universe.

“Bad Education”
Perhaps one of the biggest titles for sale, “Bad Education” stars Hugh Jackman, Allison Janney, Ray Romano and Alex Wolff and is based on the real-life events that took place at writer Mike Makowsky’s high school.
“Citizen K”
Following his critically lauded “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” Alex Gibney is back with “Citizen K,” a documentary about Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who went from communist to political prisoner in a 20-year battle with Putin.
“The Friend”
Based on the award-winning Esquire article of the same name, the film follows a man (Jason Segel) who puts his life on hold to help his friends though a terminal cancer diagnosis. Dakota Johnson and Casey Affleck also star in the Gabriela Cowperthwaite (“Blackfish”) film.
“How to Build a Girl”
Everyone is obsessed with Beanie Feldstein following her performance in “Booksmart,” so naturally, this film has become a buzzy title for Tiff buyers.
