Jukkalan review
Al_The_Strange9 July 2013
This film's American title must have been written by a master of the obvious. Heck yeah, Jija Yanin kicked plenty of butt in Chocolate and Raging Phoenix, it's not like I need a separate movie to tell me she's badass. On the other hand, having another film with Yanin kicking butt is always welcome.

The girl may be badass, but the movie isn't so much. It does have action in sporadic bursts, and they are pretty well-choreographed. A few of the fights are pretty imaginative (one cool scene involved Yanin fighting around a bicycle). But in between the action, the movie will either drag a lot with the sappy romantic subplots, or weird you out with some of the goofiest and weirdest comedy Thailand can offer. Seriously, why are there midgets everywhere? Why does the crime boss sound like a retarded kid who just sucked on a helium balloon? Why does the guy with the stupid haircut ride a fuzzy robotic horse? Why...ah, forget it.

As far as the story goes, it started off being very simple, almost to the point of being dumb and pointless. After a while, however, things just became totally random and irreverent, thanks to a number of useless subplots layered on. The main conflict gets shoved to the side, while the characters go on and on over their silly love lives. It's too disjointed to really work. And despite being really colorful and goofy, the characters aren't that well-developed either.

The film looks pretty cheap too, with standard photography and editing, and a rather low-quality production value. Acting is pretty mixed all around; Jija Yanin is probably the single most redeemable value to this film, for she does put on an appealing performance (in addition to pulling off some impressive fight moves). Everybody else ranges from being silly to being dumb. Writing is not terribly sophisticated either. This film uses a decent mix of rock and pop songs on its soundtrack.

It's a weird, stupid, fun little flick, with enough action and weirdness to appeal as a novelty. Sadly, it's nowhere near as awesome as I'd expect, especially when compared to Chocolate or Ong Bak. Unless you have an affinity for weird and silly Thai comedies, this film is not recommended.

3/5 (Entertainment: Good | Story: Poor | Film: Poor)

like thai always do....
fluffset19 February 2013
If you've seen Ong bak series, bangkok KO, chocolate or any action stuff from siamese team. You will know what you will see once you make a decision to watch this movie. One thing that I notice from every thai action movie I ever see is they never tell us how the main character know how to fight! They just can fight automatically and very skillfully. I don't know but I honestly enjoying this movie because its fighting choreography is awesome although we always see that move, you know like bare-knuckle and I wonder why they never using gun, that's more easier right? But for me, for action lover like me this movie is considered OK and watchable, have some funny moment and interesting subplot like love, drugs dealer and like thai always do. Just watch it!

A good movie with a great mix of comedy and action...
paul_haakonsen8 April 2014
If you enjoy the Jackie Chan style movies of comedy and action mixed together with a bunch of physical acrobatics and stunts, then you will definitely also light "Jukkalan" (with the amazingly bad English title of "This Girl is Badass").

The story is about Jukkalan (played by JeeJa Yanin) who lives with Wang (played by Petchtai Wongkamlao (who also directed the movie). Jukkalan works as a bike messenger, delivering questionable goods to an even less questionable clientèle. The young Duan (played by Chalerm Yamchamang) is in love with Jukkalan, but she doesn't acknowledge him or his courting, as she has her eyes set on Pong (played by Sthit Amornvej). Things heat up and turn dangerous as various questionable bosses wants their goods and the bike messengers soon find themselves in over their heads.

Storywise, then "Jukkalan" was adequate. The story was simple and very easy to follow, however it was simple to the point where it was starting to be a tad too much. But the pace of the movie, the action and the chance to see JeeJa Yanin in a comedic action role more than makes up for the lack of a proper storyline.

Something that really had be puzzled were the characters in the movie. Most of them were really odd and hilarious, not to mention very much out there.

While "Jukkalan" doesn't match "Chocolate" or "Raging Phoenix", it is a must watch for all fans of JeeJa Yanin.

Fighting Beat
kosmasp15 February 2015
In Germany it was released as part of the Fighting Beat "trilogy", not that this has anything in common with those other movies other than they are all from Thailand and are action orientated. This tries to up the action sequence ante, by making many of them being "on the move" (bikes and other things getting involved or being used by one or multiple participants).

The action is working, the humor another factor this tries to use as much as possible to distinguish itself from other action movies, might not hit home as often as the punches do. Depending on your sense of humor or the bar you're setting for the jokes. Not a bad effort if you consider the action sequences, but not a good overall movie either

Only good enough if you're Thai.
turnerw-757035 February 2020
Jukkalan (2011) is not a very good movie. Not even the kicking ass of the gangsters can keep me watching as this show was not very good. It didn't have what I was exonerating about Action Jackson from 1988. Magnet Releasing is the worst studios to see shows from. Only a little bit of action and a whole lots talk.

Not Good
nixflixnpix27 February 2022
Chocolate was so awesome!! Unforgetable! But this?

Writing and dialogue are not good. The fights are not good or realistic. They are boring.

The film is funny. The knife part was hilarious and badass! But it's just not a good movie. Sorry.

Great fight choreography defeats deficient script to win on points
lotekguy-16 May 2021
From what I've seen (mostly Tony Jaa's work, plus a few others), Thai martial arts films seem to run on more frenetic energy than those of other Asian sources. That's a good thing. I've not noticed JeeJa Yanin before, but here she approaches Jaa's level of intensity, balanced with a touch of Jackie Chan's comedy. The script hovers between incoherence and stupidity, but who cares? A couple of early fight scenes, uniquely using bicycles and parts as weapons, justify watching this action comedy. The dialog only delivers a few really good laughs, but they help.

Outtakes run during the credits. But they're mostly dialog screwups, rather than the more entertaining stunt mishaps that Jackie provides.

Not as good as most of her stuff.

Warning: Spoilers
I first saw JeeJa Yanin in Chocolate, so when I saw a copy of this movie I went ahead and bought it.

First off, you need to know this is a comedy with action vs the normal action with some humor. What this ultimately means though is that even though it did a fairly good job at both the subtitles and English language tracks, the humor just does not translate well.

I seriously encourage you to watch the trailer for the movie first before you watch the movie itself. On the DVD there is a scene in it that does not appear in the movie, yet it will help explain her reference to elephants later on.

On the bright side the action is still good and they continue to do real stunt work like old school Jackie Chan.

This movie is really bad, painfully drawn out in some areas and isn't as good as Yanin's Chocolate
kevin_robbins25 August 2021
This Girl Is Bad-Ass!! (2011) is currently available on Tubi and tells the tale of a woman who is hired by two gangs to sneak items to various locations. Being stuck in the middle her life is constantly at risk...until she decides she should be the one to bring down both gangs. This movie stars and is directed by Petchtai Wongkamlao (The Bodyguard 1 & 2) and also stars JeeJa Yanin (Chocolate). The storyline for this is fairly dreadful but the fight scenes at times are really good. There are some really clever fight sequences with good use of props. There are also some comedy squeezed into this, especially one of the mob bosses voices. Overall this movie is really bad, painfully drawn out in some areas and isn't as good as Yanin's Chocolate. I would recommend watching that over this and would score this a 3/10.

This Lightweight Yarn Lives Up to its Title!
zardoz-1321 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"Bodyguard" director Petchtai Wongkamlao's exciting, but superficial martial arts, action-romantic comedy about a ball-breaking babe and her misadventures as a bike messenger for opposing crime bosses qualifies as fun from start to finish. An orphan girl, Jukkalan (JeeJa Yanin of "Chocolate"), lives with her Uncle Wang (Petchtai Wongkamlao), and courts death and danger daily as she smuggles contraband. Jukkalan isn't prepared for what happens after she steals drugs from a greedy gangster, Boss Piak Pakkred (Anek Intajan), who speaks with a hilariously high-pitched whine. Despite his effeminate voice, Pakkred isn't faint of heart. He is a trigger-happy dastard with no qualms about shooting his own men dead on the spot if they have not done as he bid them. If it weren't bad enough for Jukkalan, she exacerbates his problem when she steals from another crime boss, Boss Cha (Udom Songsaeng), to repay Pakkred. Wongkamlao never lets the fleet-footed action bog down, and he keeps things lively with some clever dialogue and splendidly choreographed fight sequences between our heroine contending with dozens of heavies. Wongkamlao doesn't spend all his time on Jukkalan's long-running battle with the villains. He has other characters, too. Everybody seems to be in love with a person that has no idea how much they idolize them. Jukkalan has flipped head over heels for a young hunk who sings and strums a guitar. Although she doesn't realize it, Jukkalan is the object of affection for another guy. She knows him, but she doesn't pay him any mind. As it turns out, the people that some people are infatuated with have no use to them. The fight scenes are wonderful, with Jukkalan taking down the opposition with flair. She uses her bike in one scene and inflicts considerable devastation. She is something to see when she goes into combat mode. "This Girl is Badass" is an entertaining epic!

laugh alert

Warning: Spoilers
this movie had my tummy hurting...boy i was laughing so hard gosh it was good, anyway i won't give you any spoilers so :P but i can say it was a really good watch, i didn't waste my time. the actors were great i felt a little sad for some of the characters seeing as they had some tough roles to act, i just love Jeeja Yanin in it so obviously it's going to be a good movie. i rally liked that in her movies she has a different signature move, gosh it's hard to not give out spoilers but you've got to watch it yourself and see the hard physical labour these guys put into it, i've been watching Jeeja for a long time and her roles are becoming more light hearted and not to serious which is a nice change but i can't wait to see her in Sin-Jin it's not out yet but that role is going to be more epic..can't wait to see it.
