The creator of Disney+’s Becoming Karl Lagerfeld has explained the thinking behind the team’s decision to eschew a biopic when telling the story of a crucial stage in the fashion icon’s life.
Gaumont’s Daniel Brühl-starring six-parter, which premiered out of competition at Canneseries last night, focuses on Lagerfeld’s entry into the fashion world in the early 1970s and his relationship with rivals like Yves Saint-Laurent.
“It was important to me not just to do this as a biopic,” creator Isaure Pisani-Ferry said this morning at MIPTV. “A biopic takes the fun facts of life and lays them out one after the other. It addresses the curiosity of the viewer. I didn’t want it to read like a Wikipedia page about this person.”
Pisani-Ferry added that Lagerfeld – who died five years ago – is “at a turning point” during the series, surrounded by characters full of “love,...

Daniel Brühl has recalled the time he swerved a Karl Lagerfeld cover shoot two decades before playing him in the eponymous Disney+ series that airs out of competition at tonight’s Canneseries.
The BAFTA-nominated Rush star met the fashion icon in the early noughties but it has had a long lasting effect on him, and he was later to discover that this was true in the reverse.
Speaking to Deadline on the day of the Becoming Karl Lagerfeld premiere, the German-Spanish actor detailed how he was taking part in a photo shoot at the Berlinale right after announcing himself on the world stage with his critically-acclaimed performance in Wolfgang Becker’s Good Bye, Lenin!.
“There was this Karl Lagerfeld photo shoot and all the German actors were stood together cramped like sausages and my Spanish pride kicked in, and I just thought, ‘This is embarrassing’,” Brühl explained. “But [Lagerfeld] saw it...

Today’s Hollywood stars are more “sophisticated” and “aware of the business” than in the days Kyle MacLachlan was starting out, the Sex and the City star said today as he gave his thoughts on another Twin Peaks reboot.
As a budding actor, MacLachlan played the role of Paul Atreides in David Lynch’s 1980s version of Dune and he spotlighted how different the approach is for today’s young stars such as Timothée Chalamet, who plays Atreides in Denis Villeneuve’s version, and Chalamet’s co-star Zendaya.
“When I started I was plucked from relative obscurity from Seattle, where they had found me for Dune,” MacLachlan told a packed house at Cannes’ Espace Miramar this afternoon. “I thought I was going to work as a repertory theater actor and then suddenly I was in LA and I was like, ‘What am I doing? The O’Keefe Music Foundation, a youth music education program in Ohio, has unleashed its latest video — a blistering cover of Nine Inch Nails‘ “Wish” that’s well on its way to viral fame.
The O’Keefe Music Foundation (Omf) is a nonprofit music organization that seeks to provide high quality music education to any child in the world for free. Omf has a particular affinity for helping its students create music videos for YouTube, with the new Nin clip being a stellar example.
This isn’t your standard performance clip, but a full-on professional concept video befitting of a major band. What starts as a rather humdrum birthday party goes off the rails when the kids pick up their instruments and lay waste to the living room where their gear resides, ripping through the 1993 Nin single.
Imagine a children’s b-day party turned DIY house show and you’ll get the gist.

Hollywood rivalries are quite common between A-listers, given the perpetual competition in the entertainment industry. Therefore, throwing light upon the subtle beef between Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg, let’s find out if the latter could ever possibly break the former’s box office record.
Mark Wahlberg in The Departed
Admitting to a growing tension between him and the Boston boys Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg noted feeling competitive around them. Considering them as his rivals in the industry, Wahlberg even claimed to try and outdo them. While it might be easy to outperform Affleck at the box office, it seems impossible for the actor to topple Damon’s box office game.

The late Hollywood legend Stanley Kubrick is often known for his classic works and his perfectionism in the entertainment industry. Offering audiences with iconic works like 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, and A Clockwork Orange, Kubrick left behind a massive unfillable hole in Hollywood.

However, while the director is appreciated for his perfectionism, determination, and passion, there are a few stars who experienced a difficult time with Stanley Kubrick. One such collaborator was Shelley Duvall who called out the filmmaker’s ruthless side that she witnessed while filming The Shining, opposite Jack Nicholson.

Article 370 Box Office Collection Day 11 ( Photo Credit – Saregama Music / YouTube )
After bringing in 3.12 crores on Friday, seeing a rise in collections on Saturday (5.25 crores), and then jumping quite well all over again on Sunday (7.25 crores), Article 370 maintained a good hold on the second Monday as well. The collections came to 2 crores*, and that’s less than a 50% drop when compared to Friday. That’s how things were in the first weekend as well, and now the hold is actually even better in the second weekend.
The fact that the film has stayed around the 2 crores mark means that this would be yet another bountiful week ahead for the Yami Gautam starrer. This is what’s happening in the current times when set films start demonstrating far better stability from the second weekend onwards as audiences begin to warm up for them if the reports are good.

The unexpected highlight came when Pantera revisited the dark, seven-minute masterpiece “Floods,” the first performance of the standout track from The Great Southern Trendkill since 2001. A fan favorite, “Floods” is one of the group’s more artful and doomier moments, warranting comparisons to one of Philip Anselmo’s other projects, Down.

As a recent new grandfather, Mads Mikkelsen couldn’t be happier, but he doesn’t smile much in his new movie. An earthy 18th-century period piece, The Promised Land sees the Dane play a hard-up veteran, Ludvig Kahlen, who is determined to turn the blasted heaths of Jutland into a thriving farmland. It’s a Western of sorts, which becomes noticeably clearer when Kahlen starts to cross swords with a competing local landowner, but, for Mikkelsen, it’s a subversive alpha male story of the kind he does so well, from the brutal Viking fantasy Valhalla Rising to the white-cold survival drama Arctic.
In his homeland, the film has a much more blunt title, Bastarden, which drills much further down into the essence of the character. “The literal meaning in English is being the illegitimate son of someone,” the actor explains, “but it also means, obviously, to be an asshole.

Britney Spears’ memoir The Woman in Me is big. But it’s not the biggest.
First week sales reports indicate the memoir has sold 1.1 million copies in the U.S. alone through its first week. The sales figures include pre-orders, print sales, e-books, and audiobooks. Print accounted for 418,000 copies, according to Circana, which tracks the publishing market.
“I poured my heart and soul into my memoir, and I am grateful to my fans and readers around the world for their unwavering support,” Spears said in a statement released Wednesday by Gallery Books, a division of Simon & Schuster.
The Woman in Me was released Oct. 24. On the day of publication, Spears posted on Instagram that her book had become “the highest-selling celebrity memoir in history.”
So far, it’s not even the highest selling memoir of 2023. Not helping the cause is Spears’ refusal to do interviews in support of the book.

And now four-time, NBA champion LeBron James and hall of famers Peyton Manning have combined with the Obamas’ production company to contribute their own sports series centered around the NBA, Variety has confirmed.
James’ SpringHill Company (which he started with business partner Maverick Carter) will join Manning’s production company Omaha Productions and the Obamas’ Higher Ground. The series will divide up each episode following various NBA athletes as they live their lives, similar to the Netflix docuseries “Quarterback,” which followed three NFL quarterbacks during the 2022-2023 football season.
Higher Ground’s “American Factory” won the Academy Award for best documentary in 2019 and past films “Crip Camp” and “Becoming” were both nominated. The production company currently has a first look deal with Netflix, so assumptions are being made that this...

As adults, we know that not everyone can be trusted. However, little kids, like Peter in the 2023 Lionsgate horror flick "Cobweb," should be able to trust their parents. Is the knocking sound young Peter hears in his bedroom real or in his imagination, as his mom keep telling him? Or are they perhaps lying to him and hiding a dangerous and terrifying secret? There's a line in the horror film "Silent Hill" that says, "Mother is God in the eyes of a child," so who can a child trust if they can't trust their parents?
The psychological thriller "Cobweb" comes to us from first-time feature director Samuel Bodin and writer Chris Thomas Devlin ("Texas Chainsaw Massacre"), and /Film's own William Bibbiani called it "one of the best horror movies of the year." You didn't know? You didn't see a poster or commercial anywhere for the film? That might be because...

The revamped Pantera embarked on the band’s first North American headlining tour in 22 years on Friday, July 28th, in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.
Notably, the encore consisted of the Far Beyond Driven cuts “Slaughtered” and “Revolution Is My Name,” the first time either song had been played live by Pantera since 2001.
The rest of the setlist included many of the Pantera staples and album cuts the group has been playing during its previous one-off festival performances and overseas dates.
“A New Level” from Vulgar Display of Power opened the set, and from there Philip Anselmo and company played classics such as “Mouth for War,” “I’m Broken, “5 Minutes Alone,” and their cover of Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan,” among others. Anselmo and the audience then broke into a chorus of “Happy Birthday” for bassist Rex Brown, who turned 59 the day before.

The turn of the new millennium marked a realignment in both global politics and pop culture. September 11th and the seemingly endless wars that followed obliterated the illusion of relative peace and prosperity that, in the late 20th century, lulled much of the Western world into a sense of complacency. The Chicks were blacklisted for speaking out against George W. Bush’s military adventures. And the music industry was on the brink of collapse, rocked by the rise of Napster and the ensuing digital revolution.
Amid all of it, the teen-pop bubble of the late 1990s finally popped. Thanks to readily accessible information at our fingertips, we don't really have folk heroes anymore, but kayfabe is still alive thanks to the world of professional wrestling ... err, I mean, "sports entertainment." Of those figures, there is no one quite as polarizing as Vincent Kennedy McMahon. For nearly half a century, Vince McMahon has been the most powerful presence in the world of professional wrestling, turning WWE into one of the most financially successful companies in all of entertainment.
His influence and importance cannot be overstated, which is why it's so difficult to grapple with his legacy. Love is not the only thing in the air this February. The Grammy Awards took place on February 5, celebrating the best in the recording arts. One wouldn’t typically associate the Grammys with lovebirds — except of course when love songs like “I Will Always Love You” prevail. But this awards season is reminding me of one relationship goal that’s probably less common than going on vacations together or pulling off sick Halloween couples costumes. Here are five pairs of romantic partners who share that they’re both Grammy-winning artists.

Jay-Z is not far behind, having earned 24 trophies throughout his extensive career. Jay and Beyoncé therefore hold the record for the most lauded couple in Grammy history with a combined 56 awards. Jinger Vuolo, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s fourth daughter, grew up on television. She is a much different person now than when 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On viewers watched her life unfold, though. In recent years, Jinger has walked away from her family’s ultra-conservative Christine ministry and is speaking out about her journey. The mother of two even said she laughs at some of the strict courtship rules she once diligently followed.
What were the Duggar family’s strict courtship rules, exactly?
It’s been a long time since TLC viewers watched a Duggar courtship play out on television. Justin Duggar was the last of the Duggar family members to announce a romance on Counting On. His courtship, however, wasn’t filmed in the same way as past courtships. So, let’s go over the family’s strict rules.

After releasing her memoir, Becoming Free Indeed, Jinger Duggar Vuolo opened up about the life she hopes to create for her two daughters, Felicity and Evangeline.
While acknowledging her “cult-like” upbringing left her riddled with anxiety and terrified, Vuolo shared her hope that her children would have a “very different life” than hers. And she also offered her opinion on why her parents ended up on the “damaging” path they also put their kids on.

"Avatar: The Way of Water" has taken over the world. Just last week, the long-awaited sequel to the 2009 blockbuster passed the 2 billion worldwide box office mark. This means James Cameron has directed three of the four top-grossing films of all time — a phenomenal showing for a film that the echo chambers of the internet were convinced was doomed from the beginning. For those of us who have seen the movie, it's obvious why it has resonated with so many audiences around the world.
As strange and abrasive as Cameron's vision of Pandora is, "Avatar: The Way of Water" focuses on emotional truth, which helps the alien world and its characters find universal appeal. In addition, the completely CG environment and the eccentric creatures within it evoke a feeling of natural wonder, something that we crave in our mundane, technologically driven lives. The new characters, the young and plucky children of...

Pedro Neves Marques's Becoming Male in the Middle Ages is now showing exclusively on Mubi in most countries starting January 25, 2023, in the series Brief Encounters.I’m constantly writing stories or poetry. Sometimes these writings lead to nothing, otherwise they’re somehow published. Occasionally they are the spark for a film, either because they challenge me visually, reveal a strong-willed character, or simply carry the emotional mood and political perspective I’m looking for.Becoming Male in the Middle Ages began as one such story. It offered the emotional substratum that I’ve been focusing my films on these days—emotion as an approach to think through politics past and present. It was, in all regards, a slice-of-life type of story, which I’m also increasingly enamored by—a certain care for mundanity and daily life, which I then inevitably disturb with a very subtle, yet hopefully poignant, speculation or even science fiction.
