- At the King of England's court, the Prince of Orange is flashed by the King's courtesan, presumably by order of the King who is amused at his nephews apparent homosexuality.
- Charles II's courtesan lies on top of him on a bed. They sit up and she kisses him while discussing politics. Later, as he sits in a chair, she sits facing him, pulls her nightgown to her waist and he kisses and nozzles her exposed breasts.
Violence & Gore

- Lots of naval warfare, many sailors are killed or injured. Some instances feature less gory shots of CGI.
- Members of the opposing factions participate in riots several times (little violence is shown).
- A man (Cornelis de Witt) is beaten and tortured on a rack. He scorns the torturer nevertheless.
- The movie's climactic scene portrays the historically authentic murder of Dutch politicians Johan and Cornelis de Witt, orchestrated by the brothers' royalist enemies and carried out by an angered mob. Although the dramatic emphasis shifts away from the bloody deed itself, the viewer is perfectly aware of the fact that they are being castrated alive and their clasped hands hewed off; subsequently the brothers are shot to death and their bodies mutilated.
- At the Prince of Orange's arrival at the scene, a man offers him Johan de Witts genitals to buy (not clearly shown).
Profanity

Frightening & Intense Scenes

- Early in the film, Michiel de Ruyter's wife Anna suffers from a miscarriage; the scene confines itself to the psychological trauma.
- Alone at home with her children, Anna de Ruyter has to face a mob of royalists accusing her husband of treachery and threatening to set the de Ruyter estate afire. Visibly shaken, she talks down the mob and is able to return to her scared children. Given the political situation, the lynching of the innocent family seems just as possible.
- The lynching of the de Witt brothers, who are trying to clutch at each other's hands to the last breath, is gruesome and hard to watch.
Spoilers
Sex & Nudity
- A Dutch riot mob in the process of maiming and killing two "traitors," one man slices off this "traitor's" genitals and holds up his fist to show it off to the mob. No graphic detail is shown. Later, in the distance and in shadow, two naked bodies are hung, disemboweled upside down on a pole.
