DI Helen Morton..."Shut up and deal"
safenoe29 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
In part 1 DCI Banks and his team (sans DS Cabbot, who is on maternity leave) attempt to solve the brutal murder of "unassuming accountant" Keith Rothwell (Dominic Mafham) after he and his wife returned home from a wedding anniversary with his status conscious wife. They return home to find their daughter bound and gagged, and then the murderer blows his head off in the garage.

Or does he?

There's a bit of a twist at the end here regarding who was really murdered, and it fits within the narrative of the midlife crisis that some men go through I guess.

The Yorkshire coast is beautiful, and you can feel the cold weather in this compelling and gripping instalment of DCI Banks. We get to see Leeds in all its glory, and the architecture is impressive.

It's good to see DI Morton (Doc Martin's Caroline Catz) being part of the team when she joins her team (DCI Banks, DS Jackman, DC Blackstone) for a poker match at work.

Good Storytelling; Plausible Conclusion
Hitchcoc9 January 2019
As Banks and Morton pursue the killer they are confronted by problems with the credibility of the victim. They are chasing shadows and dealing with incomplete information. When we get to the end, we can see why things are as they are. A fruitless search for the guy who pulled the trigger leads to some surprises. One problem I have with these British, stiff upper lip, cops is that they reject happiness for the job. That professional musician really likes him. He didn't have to go to Budapest--he could have developed a relationship with her slowly. Oh my. It's the old lone wolf thing.

Dry Bones That Dream: Part 2

Warning: Spoilers
DCI Banks confronts a shady politician and a business associate of Rothwell has gone missing. It all leads to three people being involved in some kind of money laundering activities.

Given all that Banks contemplates his future with the force after making too many waves with a local MP.

There may even be a hint of romance. A shared love of Ella Fitzgerald. However this musician was carrying on with a dead accountant.

Just what if Keith Rothwell had other women and he wanted to run away and start a new life.

That head being blown off then makes a lot of sense. Even his tight fistedness makes sense as to why an ex soldier is going around looking for his final payment.

It ties together well, there are enough hints so that the final twist is not that much of a surprise.

Hopefully Morton finally gets on well with her new team. She certainly has kept a poker face until now.
