Knickers in a twix.

The Ghosts are elated to learn that Alison has put gifts into a special room for them, to repay her kindness, they put on a panto for her.

They had a lot to live up to following last year's seasonal episode, and credit where it's due, this was lovely.

Once again they managed to get it spot on, the perfect mix of humour and moving moments, the jokes really worked well, the whole concept was smashing.

Loved to see Pat get a peach of a story, that VHS really did have an affect on him, Howick was terrific.

It seemed to captured the actual meaning of Christmas, with Alison and Mike learning that Christmas isn't about impressing at dinner, but being with loved ones.

To be fair, there were a couple of dad jokes, but it's Christmas, so they fitted in really well. That ending, I sobbed!

Sentimental, funny, once again that's a Christmas special, nailed. 9/10.

Amazing

This Christmas special is by far the best out of all of the Christmas specials because of its wonderful comedy, family spirit and it's large focus on pat. The episode's plot is very simple which is what makes the episode so good, it's about the ghosts wanting to perform a pantomime for Allison as a thank you for all the presents she has given them, Mike and Allison are going to mikes parents house but the traffic is really bad so they end up playing games and eating the "sides" that Mike has packed. Overall this Christmas special is a lot of fun and has a really heartwarming ending and all the ghosts shine in their roles.

Oh yes it is.

I forgot to review the 2021 Christmas special, so I might have to see if I can find that on the IPlayer, but for now, the 2022 edition, which, for me, follows a series that I am still enjoying, but starting to wonder if maybe we've told all the story there is to tell. This special though has me wondering about that, because it's a truly touching and funny episode.

Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) head to his family for Christmas, but not before Alison sets up a present for each of their spectral housemates and makes them promise not to go in early and spoil it. Feeling the need to reciprocate, the ghosts spend their Christmas day planning a Pantomime performance - having spoiled his present though Pat (Jim Howick) is not in the mood.

The three strands of the story, Alison and Mike's failed attempt to reach his family home, the Pantomime, with Kitty the reluctant star and Thomas the thwarted director and the present room, all provide laughs. The true emotional resonance though is for Pat, as his present is footage of an old family Christmas converted from video tape. Initially it has then opposite effect, as he sees himself as a figure of derision by his family, but it does pay off in the best way at the conclusion.

I worry that the main show is repeating it's ideas a little more than I'd want it to, but, somehow, these Christmas specials seem (despite their obvious repeated elements) to be the show at it's best.

If you love Ghosts then conclude with season 5 episode 6 Last Resort

Warning: Spoilers
All the previous Xmas specials were brilliant but this one whilst not bad had a nonsensical and lacklustre plot, with beloved characters seemingly going through the motions. All the previous seasons arcs that reinforced Alison and Mike's desire to stay at Button House completely ripped up with a volte-face decision that took them less than 30 minutes to undertake. Leaving because the Ghosts were there, yet Alison can still see ghosts everywhere so why leave to get another place with new ghosts. Alisons character whilst in keeping with being a new mum was so dreary with none of the chaotic joy from previous episodes. No Humphrey to speak of or their neighbours, just Mikes mum with a subplot that never seemed to end . Personally I think if you love Ghosts then conclude with the previous season 5 finale episode 6 Last Resort. Unfortunately this Xmas special is something that cant now be unseen for myself.

It's Behind You

As Alison and Mike pay a visit to his family for Christmas. She left a gift behind for all the ghosts who are planning to put on a special pantomime performance for them.

Only Julian cajoles Pat to take a sneak peek at his present. It was meant to be something special from Alison, who managed to track down a video recording of Pat with his family at Christmas before he died.

As for the pantomime of Cinderella. It proves to be a challenge. Kitty does not want to be the lead. Julian keeps forgetting his lines. Lady Fanny is fine as the wicked stepmother but not in her other role as the good fairy.

Then they find out that the other ghosts downstairs will be watching the performance. It will not just be Alison and Mike.

A simple but successful Christmas special. Less bickering and more heartwarming. It was good that the focus was on Pat.

He felt he came across as foolish, even a bore as he saw the video recording of his last Christmas family dinner. Only for his son to follow in his footsteps in subsequent Christmas dinners.

Christmas Special

Warning: Spoilers
As an American viewer I wish more shows had Christmas specials instead of just airing repeats on the day. As a fan of Ghosts I thought the episode was okay, but I wanted a little more drama, a little more chaos and infighting as I feel that would have created some funnier situations. It felt a little bit too safe, it felt like there was just too much love in the air, which you want on Christmas, but doesn't fit the tone of the show.

The moment with Pat seeing his family was good and wholesome and I felt that emotion. This show has been able to consistently give us moments like that so that does deserve some praise.
