Ann Hui On-wah is a film director, producer, screenwriter and actress from Hong Kong who is one of the most critically acclaimed filmmakers of the Hong Kong New Wave. She is known for her films about social issues in Hong Kong which include: literary adaptations, martial arts, semi-autobiographical works, women's issues, social phenomena, political changes, and thrillers. She served as the president of the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild from 2004 to 2006.
Hui has won numerous awards. She won Best Director at the Golden Horse Awards three times; Best Film at the Asia Pacific Film Festival; and Best Director at the Hong Kong Film Awards six times.

Berlin has unveiled the international jury for the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, which runs Feb. 15-25.
The 2024 jury will include U.S. director Brady Corbet (Vox Lux), Hong Kong filmmaker Ann Hui (Summer Snow), Berlinale regular Christian Petzold (Afire, Undine), Spanish director Albert Serra (Pacification), Italian actress Jasmine Trinca (The Son’s Room) and the Ukrainian writer Oksana Zabuzhko.
Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave, Black Panther) will serve as president of the International Jury.

Among the most prominent members and one of the “instigators” of Hong Kong New Wave, Ann Hui has been dealing with female issues, social phenomena, political charges, history and the ever changing Hong Kong, in a body of work that covers five decades. Born in China in 1947, Ann Hui moved to Hong Kong when she was still in her youth. After graduating in English and Comparative Literature from Hong Kong University, she spent two years at the London Film School. Returning to Hong Kong, she worked as an assistant to director King Hu before joining Tvb to direct drama series and short documentaries. In 1978, she directed three episodes for the Rthk series Below the Lion Rock (1972). After that, she directed her debut feature “The Secret”. Her path after that was one of continuous success with her winning Best Director at the Golden Horse Awards three times and six times at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

As a producer, he worked with the director Ann Hui three times – with “Summer Snow” (Best Actress award for Josephine Siao at Berlin Iff in 1995), “A Simple Life” (Best Actress award for Deanie Ip at Venice Iff in 2011), and “Our Time Will Come“. The script for “A Simple Life” was based on the true story of his maid who worked for four generations of the Lee family for almost 60 years. His book “Taojie and Me” was published in 2012. His play “The Amahs” was produced by Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2015.
