Det. Insp. Edmund Reid : [Speaking with Ressler] Have you ever heard of ergotism?
Cpt. Homer Jackson : I'm with you.
-
Det. Insp. Edmund Reid : [in the morgue] Yet these, these first, we may study, they must show us the way to our poisoner. Now, Mr. Ressler, you must have thought of the details of these men, the circumstances and commonalities that might bind them?
Sidney Ressler : Yes, I have, of course... but nothing.
Det. Insp. Edmund Reid : No, we do not allow nothing! There must be a connection!
Cpt. Homer Jackson : Reid... iodine, cabinet.
[Reid takes a jar from the cabinet and a paintbrush, while Jackson wipes the chalkboard clean and begins a list]
Sidney Ressler : [confused] What are they doing now?
Det. Sgt. Bennet Drake : If you don't know, and I don't, sir, it's often best not to ask.
-
Det. Insp. Edmund Reid : Bennett! Bennett, will you... will you do me a service?
Det. Sgt. Bennet Drake : Name it, sir.
Det. Insp. Edmund Reid : Mrs. Reid. I, uh... I may not leave here at this time, but I would know she was well.
Det. Sgt. Bennet Drake : It'll be my pleasure, sir.
Cpt. Homer Jackson : [as Drake turns to leave] Drake... take a turn past Tenter Street as well, will ya?
-
Cpt. Homer Jackson : It was a German named Koch who first identified them. Grew them, too, in a jar. Cholera bacillus. Learned how it loved dank earth and lived to breed in river basins. And how, if your glass was powerful enough, you could actually see them in a man's gut.
P.C. Dick Hobbs : And do you see it, sir?
Cpt. Homer Jackson : [looks into his microscope] ... No. No, Hobbs, I do not.

[in the Eastern Dispensary]
Det. Insp. Edmund Reid : It spreads.
Cpt. Homer Jackson : Indeed.
Det. Insp. Edmund Reid : Is it what we fear?
Cpt. Homer Jackson : That depends what you fear. The fat man, his insides have a story to tell... but that story ain't cholera.
