Exclusive: The creator of Canadian smash Letterkenny has struck a multi-year content deal with streamer Crave and New Metric Media that Crave’s programing boss says is a first of its kind.
With Letterkenny’s 12th and final season dropping on Boxing Day, Jared Keeso will subsequently make 49 episodes of Letterkenny spin-offs including Shoresy and other potential shows across several years.
Unveiling the news to Deadline, Crave VP Content Development & Programming Justin Stockman said “this is probably the only deal that has ever been done like this in Canada.” The deal does not prevent Keeso from making shows for other platforms, eschewing the golden handcuffs approach taken by some of the major Hollywood players.
“There is not a lot of pre-committing in Canadian content so this is pretty unique but shows our belief in Jared and the show, and in other shows that don’t exist yet,” added Stockman. “This...

Coming off another year marked by uncertainty and conflict, ordinary, unlikely heroes take center stage in a slew of new shows. While crime especially the Nordic-inspired kind is not going anywhere, and there are quite a few spectacles waiting around the corner, including Mipcom world premiere “Concordia,” intimate stories about families and friends butting heads but ultimately trying to come together continue to dominate the market stage. There are also more portrayals of strong, complicated women who dare to dream big today or in the past. The following is a list of some of the buzziest titles at Mipcom.
“After the Party”

Penny Wilding (played by Robyn Malcolm) likes to keep herself very busy: she is a science teacher, basketball coach, environmental activist, mother and grandmother. Famously outspoken and suffering no fools, she alienates many in her close-knit community. But Penny is perfectly fine with that.

Navigating the U.S. actors and writers strikes is producing a host of winners and losers during a period of peak disruption for the film industry. Count as clear victors local Canadian filmmakers as their homegrown films and TV series grab the spotlight at the Toronto Film Festival.
“It’s a tough time in the industry. It’s unfortunate timing for the Toronto Film Festival. But with challenge, comes opportunity. We’re always looking for that extra bit of attention we can get,” says Mark Montefiore, CEO of New Metric Media, which will present director Sasha Leigh Henry’s Bria Mack Gets a Life series as part of TIFF’s Primetime sidebar.
“It’s a bittersweet opportunity presented to not only Canadian filmmakers, but any international filmmakers or film this year,” adds Toronto filmmaker M.H. Murray, whose debut feature, I Don’t Know Who You Are, will have its world premiere at TIFF.
