Welcome Villain Films presents two fright-fests, but tired tricks, bad acting and some head-banging repetition leads to hackneyed hokum
New horror-focused studio Welcome Villain are aiming to be the next Blumhouse, but judging by this double bill of early releases it could be a long road. Both aim to maximise low-budget returns by restricting themselves to a single location – an approach that worked very well recently for filling station ordeal Night of the Hunted, not to mention of course the apex of horror, The Shining. But in truth neither of these makes strong use of its chosen locale, and both are tired, borderline exhausted deployments of the audience-prodding, jump-scare bag of tricks.
Malum (★★☆☆☆), by director Anthony Diblasi, at least gives its backstory a bit of welly. A reworking of his 2014 film Last Shift, it sees rookie police officer Jessica (Jessica Sula) choose to work a solo shift at the old...

I love such evocative movie titles. We’ve had The Night of the Hunter, and now here comes Night of the Hunted. They are not related in any way, though. Just the title reminded me of that great noir classic. Night of the Hunted is a ‘situation movie,’ as described by Quentin Tarantino on a reel I saw the other day. “Speed,” he said, is an example of a situation movie done to perfection, but there’s no story there, he added. Night of the Hunted is as situational as they come. The characters are stuck in a place, and so are we, and the whole concept is based on a whimsical plot that entertains for just a bit and then fizzles out faster than a helium balloon. Did this film have potential? Absolutely. Is the second half of the movie terrible? Most certainly.

Night of the Hunted, the latest film from Franck Khalfoun is a remake, but not of Jean Rollin’s 1980 paranoid thriller of the same name, though that would be a logical choice for rebooting in these conspiracy-riddled times. Instead, he and co-writer Glen Freyer have reworked and updated Rubén Ávila Calvo and David R.L.’s 2015 Spanish thriller Night of the Rat.
This film begins in a hotel room where Alice is talking to her husband on the phone, we hear something about an appointment with a fertility specialist before she hurriedly hangs up as John enters the room. Driving back to town in the pre-dawn darkness they make a stop for gas despite Jiohn’s insistence that he filled the tank the day before. Alice goes in to grab some snacks, and as...

Trafalgar Releasing’s concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was on song at the U.K. and Ireland box office, debuting at No. 1 with £5.7 million ($6.9 million), according to numbers from Comscore.
The film is now the territory’s highest grossing event cinema release, surpassing National Theatre Live’s filmed play “Prima Facie,” starring Jodie Comer, which collected £5.5 million in 2022. Swifties will now strive to take the film beyond the £9.8 million earnings of “Michael Jackson: This Is It” (2009) to make it the highest-grossing concert film in the U.K. and Ireland.
Tim Richards, founder and CEO of cinema chain Vue International, said: “We saw an incredible response from Swifties across the U.K. and Ireland who dressed up, sang along and danced away with fellow fans, with sell out sessions despite scheduling an unprecedented number of shows so no one missed out.”

Writer/Director Franck Khalfoun, the French filmmaker behind P2 and Maniac (2012), knows a thing or two about brutal horror and wringing palpable tension from it. His latest, Night of the Hunted, adapts the 2015 Spanish horror-thriller La Noche del Ratón for a grim single-location feature that taps into the tumultuous social climate. Khalfoun continues his streak for delivering nail-biting suspense through escalating violence, though the film’s messaging may prove divisive.
Alice (The Deep House’s Camille Rowe) sleepily video chats with her husband as she gets ready in her hotel room. She ends the call mere moments before her lover, John (Jeremy Scippio), enters the frame, avoiding catastrophe within seconds. After pausing to collect herself, Alice pushes John onward as they head out in the middle of the night to start their travels home. They don’t get far down the road, as a stop at a rural gas station...

Franck Khalfoun, the French filmmaker behind P2 and Maniac (2012), returns this Halloween season with Night of the Hunted, a new survival horror movie on the way from Shudder.
The film just had its world premiere at Beyond Fest 2023 and will stream exclusively on Shudder next Friday, October 20. Watch the official trailer down below.
Set in the American west, Night of the Hunted follows Alice, played by Camilla Rowe, as a road trip turns into a fight for her life when a vengeful sniper targets her and traps her in a remote, isolated gas station. “An indictment of modern polarized politics, the film is a tight but brutal single-location thriller,” Shudder previews in the official press release.
Night of the Hunted is produced by Alexandre Aja, serving as the 3rd collaboration between Aja and director Franck Khalfoun.
Franck Khalfoun and Glen Freyer wrote the screenplay.

"We seem to be stuck, you and me." Stuck in a pickle? Shudder has unveiled an official trailer for a horror thriller survival movie called Night of the Hunted, the latest film from French horror filmmaker Franck Khalfoun. This is streaming on Shudder in October just in time for Halloween, though it isn't hitting many other festivals this fall. Not to be confused with the other famous French horror film The Night of the Hunted from 1980. This one is about a sniper. In the dead of night, a remote gas station turns into a battleground of wits and wills. Can one woman outsmart a hidden sniper with a secret vendetta? Camille Rowe stars as Alice, who makes a stop and ends up in a horrifying fight for her life. The small cast includes Aleksandar Popovic, J. John Bieler, Isaiah Reyes. This seems legit scary and quite compelling for a stuck-in-one-place survival thriller.

Aja wrote and produced Khalfoun’s directorial efforts P2 and Maniac. And now they’ve teamed up again for the thriller Night of the Hunted, which is set to start streaming on both the Shudder and AMC+ services as of October 20th. We’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for Night of the Hunted, and you can check it out in the embed above.
