Roberto Saviano is writing series about infamous Libyan dictator.
Entertainment One (eOne) and Palomar have announced a new TV series about the life of Muammar Gaddafi, created by Gomorrah writer Roberto Saviano.
Saviano is developing Gaddafi and will share writing duties with Nadav Schirman (The Green Prince). The duo will also executive produce.
The series will examine the life of Gaddafi, who ruled Libya from 1969 to 2011, when he was captured and killed.
eOne controls worldwide rights to the series, which is being spearheaded by eOne’s Carrie Stein and Polly Williams with Palomar’s Carlo Degli Esposti and Nicola Serra.
“This is a TV series about a warrior, a dreamer, who becomes a savage and merciless tyrant. A multi-millionaire oil tycoon and a vicious oppressor,” said Saviano.
“It’s the story of an adventurer from the desert, a rock ‘n’ roll tyrant, who self-ascribed terrorist attacks he didn’t organize and associations with terrorist groups that he...

Unsurprising surprises dominated this morning’s Producers Guild of America documentary nominees. While the PGA’s feature nominees often align with Oscar contenders, that’s often untrue for the documentaries. In 2014, the PGA nominated “The Green Prince,” “Life Itself,” “Merchants of Doubt,” “Virunga, and “Particle Fever;” only “Virunga made the final Oscar five. (The winner was Laura Poitras’ “Citizenfour.)
Last year, the PGA did select eventual Oscar nominees “Amy” (which won the Oscar) and “The Look of Silence,” but also chose “The Hunting Ground” and “Meru,” both of which made the Oscar shortlist of 15; PGA selection”Something Better to Come” didn’t even make that cut.
Today, the committee of some 30 or more PGA documentary producers nominated two anticipated films in Roger Ross Williams’ “Life, Animated” (The Orchard/A & E) and Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made in America” (Espn Films). Both were much-lauded Sundance hits and made the Doc NYC Shortlist.

In preparation for Sundance and Berlin, Beta has picked up worldwide rights to the Israeli feature in World Cinema Dramatic Competition Sundance, “Sand Storm” and Global Screen has picked up worldwide rights to the Colombian feature “Between Sand and Sea” (“La Ciénaga”)
By the producers of Venice Public Choice Award-winning “The Farewell Party”, “Sand Storm” is an Israeli drama, shot in Arabic by debut-writer/director Elite Zexer. It will have its World Premiere at Sundance on January 25 and the European premiere to follow at the Berlinale Panorama section in February.
“Sand Storm” is the second partnership between Beta Cinema and the Israeli 2-Team Productions ( Haim Mecklberg/ Estee Yacov-Mecklberg). The film was already given the top award at the Locarno Festival’s works-in-progress section.
As wedding festivities get underway in a Bedouin village in Southern Israel, Jalila finds herself in the awkward position of hosting her husband Suliman’s marriage to a second, much younger wife. During the celebration, Jalila stumbles across eldest daughter Layla’s involvement with a boy from her university—a strictly forbidden liaison that would shame the family. Burying the indignity of Suliman and his new bride living next door, Jalila also tries to contain Layla’s situation by clamping down on her. But younger and possessed of a boundless spirit, Layla sees a different life for herself...
Director Elite Zexer: “ ‘Sand Storm’ is 87 minutes, but for me, it's years. Years of an amazing ride, of passions, of struggles, of ups, of downs, of pure joy, of forever waiting or of an impossible run. Years of creation. What I learned during the making of this film is that the most wonderful part of filmmaking is the making. It's hard to part with it and let it run loose in the world. But it's also very exciting. I can't wait.”
Producer Haim Mecklberg (2-Team Production): “We're extremely proud of “Sand Storm”, which touched the hearts of everybody who was exposed to it so far. Our collaboration with Elite was a sheer delight. Her command of every aspect of the film did not seize to amaze us through every step of the production. After a great experience we had with Beta Cinema on “The Farewell Party” (Goldwyn distributed stateside), we were very happy to find out how much they loved “Sand Storm” and we're looking forward to another fruitful cooperation.”
Beta Cinema’s Thorsten Ritter says that “ ‘Sand Storm’ is a true gem. It depicts a very particular world and culture, but never in a folkloristic or exposing way. Instead it draws you right in to find yourself immersed in family dynamics that resonate universally and regardless of being a man or woman. And while the film has not a scene too many, it is yet nuanced and multi-layered, featuring beautiful performances and a filmmaker in full command. You can tell we’re very excited.”
The second announcement emanating about Sundance also comes from Germany
Colombian feature “Between Sea and Land” (“La Ciénaga”) directed by and starring Manolo Cruz was just picked up by Munich-based international sales agent Global Screen for the world (except for Latin America which will be handled by Cineplex and which Uip will distribute in Colombia itself).
It will have its world premiere January 22, 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival,
“Between Sea And Land” (“La Ciénaga”) is a breathtakingly tour de force from actor – writer - director Manolo Cruz, codirected with Carlos del Castillo. The film, set on a small inlet adjacent to the Caribbean Sea in Colombia, tells the moving story of 28-year-old Alberto and his mother Rosa.
Alberto is afflicted with a neurological disorder that confines him to his bed, and his mother, Rosa, lovingly protects and takes care of him. Alberto’s wry humor and creativity help them muster the strength to endure, and he greatly enjoys the company of his neighbor Giselle, who showers Alberto with affection. But the life Alberto can imagine feels just as close-yet-out-of-reach as the sea he looks upon, and which he dreams of one day visiting.
Manolo Cruz (who also wrote the film) gives a tremendous performance as Alberto, a young man trapped by physical hardship but unbound by spirit. Working in close alliance with his co-director Carlos del Castillo during filming allowed Cruz the space to portray the extraordinary resilience and grace of a character caught in between the margins of a beautiful and fragile landscape.
Klaus Rasmussen, Senior Sales and Acquisitions Manager at Global Screen states, “Our whole team was amazed with this unique and exceptional film that takes the viewer into a different world poor in materialism but rich in human heart and courage. We are very happy to present Manolo Cruz’s film to the international audience.”
“Between Sea And Land” (“La Ciénaga”) is produced by Mago Films in coproduction with Photogroup Films and Scarlett Cinema.

Alma Har’el broke out big in 2011 when Bombay Beach hit the Berlin Film Festival. Winner of the Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival and nominated for the Independent Spirit “Truer than Fiction” award and Cinema Eye Honors “Best Film Debut” and “Best Cinematography” awards we’ve been patiently waiting for a follow up since. A good morsel of LoveTrue was divulged (this snip-it is pure beauty) this past April at Tribeca as a work-in-progress and naturally Berlin and Tribeca are both lieus where this could shore up, but Sundance could be a good fit as well. Shia Labeouf who performed for her in the music video for Sigur Rós, supported this project.

Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.
50. McConkey (2013)
d. Rob Bruce, Scott Gaffney, Murray Wais, Steve Winter, David Zieff
Shane McConkey was an extreme skier and Base jumper who lived life on the edge, and very much to the full.

Academy Award-winning producer Simon Chinn ("Man On Wire," "Project Nim," "Searching for Sugarman" and "The Green Prince") will join BAFTA-winning TV broadcaster Louis Theroux ("Weird Weekends" and "When Louis Met...") for a discussion on television's intersection with film on Monday, October 12th. Both Chinn and Theroux's work has led them to deal with the same dilemmas: "Do certain ideas lend themselves to film and others to television? Or are we moving towards a future where those lines become more indistinct as media platforms converge?" The 59th Annual BFI London Film Festival marks a particularly special occasion for Theroux, as his first theatrical feature will have...

Two films forgotten by the Academy, the animated adventure "The Lego Movie" and the Roger Ebert Documentary "Life Itself," triumphed at the recently concluded 2015 Producers Guild Awards.
"The Lego Movie" took home the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for producer Dan Lin while "Life Itself" won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for producers Garrett Basch, Steve James, and Zak Piper.
Meanwhile, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, John Lesher, and James W. Skotchdopole took the Oscar glitter away from Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" when "Birdman" was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

With the Mpse's nominations logged and official, all of the guilds and industry groups have had their say in the nominees stage of the season, culminating with tomorrow's Oscar nominations. Leading the way with mentions from 11 separate groups each — and boy this must make Fox Searchlight happy — is "Birdman" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel." Just behind with 10 is "The Imitation Game." What's interesting is what's just under that level. You have both "Gone Girl" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" chalking up eight groups. The former may or may not end up in the Best Picture category tomorrow (nothing would surprise me), but the latter sure did come on strong for its elements. After that, "American Sniper" has seven, "Boyhood," "Nightcrawler," "Interstellar," "Into the Woods," "The Theory of Everything" and "Unbroken" each have six and Sony Classics' hopefuls "Foxcatcher" and "Whiplash" ring in with five. That pretty much covers the landscape,...

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) have announced their film and television nominations for the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards, with winners set to be announced on January 24 and they couldn't have come at a better time... for me at least. I have been spending the last couple of days working on my 2015 Oscar predictions, finally adding predictions for the categories I had not yet set live and putting final touches on those I've had live since March of last year. The Oscar nomination ballots close this coming Thursday, January 8 and you better believe I'm looking at this list to get a better idea of what the industry is thinking. Overall, there aren't any real surprises, though one film continues to make a strong big for a nomination, that being Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler, which has continued to perform well in the precursor nominations. We also see a nomination for...

★☆☆☆☆ The Green Prince (2014) is the fantastical story of Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of Hassan Yousef one of the founders of Hamas; who was an informant for the Israeli internal secret service Shin Bet for more than 10 years until his escape to America and a conversion to Christianity. Here lies an intriguing story that calls to mind John Le Carre at his murky best, yet what we are given is the self justification and propaganda of a trio of ideologues: Mosab Hassan Yousef, his handler Gonen Ben-Itzhak (a man who was fired from the Shin Bet years ago for lying and financial mismanagement, a topic conveniently not alluded to in the film) and lastly the Israeli filmmaker Nadav Schirman.

The Producers Guild of America has a pretty good track record presaging the Best Picture winner at the Oscars. Since it began handiing out prizes in 1989, It first feted 17 of the 24 Oscar champs, including the last seven in a row. But how does it do when it comes to forecasting which Documentary Feature will win the Academy Award? -Break- This year's five nominees for the PGA prize are: "The Green Prince" "Life Itself" "Merchants of Doubt" "Particle Fever" "Virunga" Since the PGA began giving out this award in 2007, it has honored three of the seven films that went on to win the Oscar while three of its champs were snubbed outright by the academy and one contended there but was defeated. 2007: "Sicko" (lost Oscar to "Taxi to the Dark Side") 2008: "Man on Wire" 2009: "The Cove" 2010: "Waiting for 'Super..."...

Monday morning, the Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced its Documentary Motion Pictures nominees that will advance in the voting process for the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards. The feature nominations are a change of pace from previous announcements, including the Ida Awards and Cinema Eye’s Nonfiction awards. You won’t find heavy-hitters like "Citizenfour," "20,000 Days on Earth," or "The Overnighters" on this list. Instead, a few overlooked docs get the PGA bump This year's "Docuemntary Theatrical" category includes "The Green Prince," "Merchants of Doubt," "Particle Fever," "Life Itself," and "Virunga." While all five films earned positive reviews during their theatrical runs — and, in the case of "Particle Fever" and "Virunga," their prosporous lives on Netflix Instant — it's the latter two that enter the PGA nominations with Oscar traction. The preservation-conscious "Virunga" earned both Cinema Eye and Indie Spirit nominations. Steve James' Robert Ebert doc was snubbed by the latter,...

Festival moving forward following controversy surrounding the Tricycle Theatre.
The UK Jewish Film Festival (Ukjff) is preparing to host its “strongest ever” run, according to founder and executive director Judy Ironside.
The festival made headlines in August when London’s Tricycle Theatre refused to be part of the upcoming event, which runs Nov 6-23. This was due to Ukjff being part-funded by the Israeli Embassy, amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The theatre quickly reversed the ruling and invited back the Ukjff “with no restrictions on funding”.
But before the u-turn – and with 26 screenings already planned for the festival’s 18th edition - Ironside had to find new venues fast.
“We were very surprised,” said Ironside, who created the festival in 1997. “It has been the home of the festival for many years…it’s a great space and we love the venue.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been raging in its current form since the inception of the state of Israel after the Second World War. Some say there will never be peace between these two nations, while some hold out hope, or are at least cautiously optimistic that one day these opposing sides may stop the violence once and for all or at least tease out a peaceful coexistence.
Of course, like in any conflict, things are never black and white, there are always shades of grey, and just as there are people on both sides who will stop at nothing to destroy each other, there are always those people who make the moral decision to try and effect some small positive change to the status quo. In the documentary The Green Prince, director Nadav Schirman (In the Dark Room) puts the spotlight on two such people: Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son...

Even with another flood of specialty film debuts, The Skeleton Twins, the dramedy starring Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, had another impressive box office showing in its third weekend. Meanwhile, another dozen films tried to elbow past last week’s 14 newcomers and numerous others already in the market, to middling success among those reporting.
Other than Twins, the holdovers that look like they’re gaining some autumnal momentum include IFC Films‘ The Trip To Italy with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, and more niche-oriented films such as American Experience/PBS Films’ doc Last Days In Vietnam and Oscilloscope’s Art And Craft. Starz Media also scored a robust gross for the second week of Not Cool, featuring YouTube star Shane Dawson, as it migrated east to New York and was also profiled on a Starz channel doc series.
CBS Films’ Pride can be proud of scoring the weekend’s highest average among new titles.

More than a dozen new specialty films crowded the box office this weekend, including films from Terry Gilliam, Kevin Smith and singer Nick Cave. Perhaps not surprisingly, overwhelmed audiences hit a saturation point, leaving several new titles with, at best, only decent debut numbers. Despite the competition, Roadside/Lionsgate’s The Skeleton Twins held strong in its second weekend with a sizable expansion, and Snowpiercer continued to release strong VOD grosses alongside its waning theatrical returns. On a straight per-theater average, it was Cave’s 20,000 Days on Earth that easily came out on top. Drafthouse Films is distributing the Sundance 2014 documentary, which centers on writer and musician Cave as he reaches that 20,000th day in his life. The film had one of the year’s biggest non-fiction debuts, with a $26,873 gross at New York’s Film Forum. Numbers for 20,000 Days were buoyed by a offsite special event at Town Hall that included a Q&A,...

Whenever a major tentpole film dominates the box-office for several weeks, it's usually an unexpected and over performing smaller film aiming at a very different market that knocks the weakening giant off its perch.
It happened again this weekend as the Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson-led, black female audience-targeted thriller "No Good Deed" kicked Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" out of the top slot. 'Deed', costing just $13 million to make, nearly doubled its production budget with a $24.5 million haul over three days.
Family film "Dolphin Tale 2" came in second with $16.6 million, behind the $19.2 million opening of the original back in 2011 though that film had a 3D bump. The news wasn't all bad for 'Guardians' either as it became the first film of 2014 to cross the $300 million mark at the domestic box-office. It came in third with $8 million, and worldwide it also passed the $600 million mark this weekend.

American Experience/PBS Films‘ doc Last Days In Vietnam, meanwhile held over solidly, adding one theater in its second week, while China Lion maintained some momentum with the Stateside release of Chinese-language entry But Always, also adding a single location. Sony Pictures Classics expanded Love Is Strange with momentum. Comedy-drama Skeleton Twins starring Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig grossed nearly $411K in 15 theaters in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington D.C., for a very solid $27,383 PTA. The upcoming weekend boasts an onslaught of new Specialty titles vying for audiences. In all likelihood, however, many will have a short big screen life as the fall’s awards contenders ramp up and crowd others out. Five of this week’s dozen-plus newcomers are spotlighted here with Fox Searchlight’s The Drop edging on a wide release. The feature starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and James Gandolfini will bow in over 800 theaters. TWC’s The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby also joins the fray with a platform release. The film also has two accompanying titles told from the perspective of its two main characters, which will be released in more limited runs in October. Magnolia will open its thriller Honeymoon in a day and date release while Dada Films’ Swearnet: The Movie breaks a movie record with the most F-bombs ever. And Cohen Media Group’s My Old Lady bowed Wednesday in limited release.

The documentary The Green Prince tells the story of a unique connection between two men. Mosab Hassan Yousef is the son of one of the founders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Arrested at the age of 17, he was placed under the protection of Shin Bet, the Israeli equivalent of the CIA or MI6. There he meets his handler, Gonen Ben Yitzchak, who eventually turns him into a critical informant for the Israelis. It wouldn't do justice to the film to detail the back-and-forths that take place after this initial encounter, for much of the pleasure from the work delves from the surprise. Suffice it to say, there has rarely been a work, documentary or no, that so thoroughly details both the inner machinations...

Its documentary form more functional than innovative, The Green Prince recounts a harrowing and consistently surprising real-life tale of sacrifice, trust, and loyalty. Nadav Schirman’s film recounts the amazing saga of Mosab Hassan Yousef, whose father was one of the founding members of Hamas, and whose teenage desire to fight Israel was undone after he was arrested and, over the course of the aughts, became a spy for Israel’s internal security agency, Shin Bet. Collaborating closely with his handler, Gonen Ben Yitzhak, who would eventually prove to be his greatest ally, Yousef covertly undermined Hamas terrorists’ efforts while maintaining his own safety — both from Palestinians who would kill him if they knew about his work and from Is...
