Smiley Show

I titled the review Smiley Show because that's exactly what the show has a tendency to do, make me smiley at how goofy it can sometimes be.

I originally began watching Emily Owens M.D. primarily because she's Meryl Streep's daughter and then because it was something else to watch after all my 'First Line' shows were done for the week like Bones, Big Bang Theory, etc.

This show is not your Grey's Anatomy or any of the other drama heavy weights on right now. I read an interview with Mindy Kalings from The Mindy Show and Emily Owens reminds me a lot of what Kalings was trying to achieve with her show - awkward comedy, not afraid to show that women aren't always perfect, and that we have insecurities (realism such as in Girls).

The difference to me is that Emily Owens is endearing - both the character, the cast, and all the plot lines. It draws you in to its quirky humor and realistic not-too-over-the-top drama.

Additionally, I think Owens character is very well balanced. She brings out the brunt when she has to "a bunch of you have STDs!" but also knows when it's unnecessary such as not talking about how Cassandra choked in surgery. She's honest and I hope to see her stronger side grow throughout the series.

It's refreshingly different and I hope it is around for seasons to come!

Wasted Potential Due to Cancellation

It's really too bad. This show had real promise. The stories were interesting, the characters well acted with room to grow, and besides the many heart felt and candid moments it had some real juicy love triangulation going on. The whole bit between Emily, Justin Hartley, and Micah was quite the intrigue. I guess we'll never know what happens. It's a shame seeing that most anything decent will make money on DVD, Netflix, streaming, etc. Must everything come down to ratings and advertising dollars? Can we just let something good live for once and rest assured it will pay for itself in the end? Besides adequate time was not given to this show. You can't really tell anything at all in a half a season. Well, we could tell one thing, it was a good quality show. It seems this show is meant to go the way of Firefly, Infamously short, but sweet.

Just read that Mamie is the daughter of Meryl Streep and Don Gummer. Ahh it all makes sense now. Great acting genes. The shows worth catching unless you hate being left hanging by a one and done canceled series.

Mamie Gummer is brilliant.

In just a few words: I am in love with all that this show has to offer. From the very first episode, I was hooked. The topics that the show touches on and the actors performances enthrall me. I find myself completely entertained every time I watch this new take on a medical drama. Not only is it witty and fun but it is heartbreaking and thoughtful. I've enjoyed every episode that has aired thoroughly. Mamie Gummer is engaging. I love the awkwardness and naïveté that she brings to the character of Emily. The fact that the audience is able to hear her thoughts throughout each episode is brilliant. I'm truly saddened that this show has been canceled. I was looking forward to many more episodes and much more awkwardness in the future.

A good new show.

I have been watching Emily Owens MD for several weeks and looked forwarding to seeing it every week. It wasn't on for last couple of weeks and I am hoping it wasn't cancelled. It was one of the best new shows I've seen in a while. Then I saw something about it was being cancelled. I hope it's not true. It wasn't on long enough to give it a real chance. I thought it was a really good show. I thought Dr. Necar Zadegan who plays the strict boss was very good, and so was Cassandra and Justin Hartley and Rady. Mamie Gummer looks so much like her movie star mother Meryl Streep that I knew right away who Mamie's mother was. I like Mamie and think she is a good actress.I know of many TV shows I wouldn't watch which are popular, yet they cancel Emily Owens MD which I liked better than most of the popular TV shows. They shouldn't have cancelled it. I think it could have been successful. What a letdown.

Only one season, it is worth catching, and worth continuing

2/24/18. I really loved this medical comedy series! Sadly, it only lasted one season. Why? While watching the pilot I just knew I would watch the whole series. The premise was so novel - surgical internship as high school all over again. Gummer did a fine job as Emily Owens, who gets to do an internship with her medical school crush (Will) while dealing with Cassandra, her nemesis from high school. She gets to have a great friend in Tyra, a gay intern with daddy issues. Their relationships are the ongoing backstories for the 13 episodes, while dealing with at least 3 medical cases in each episode. Though it was so formulaic, the familiarity offered viewers the opportunity to focus on the dynamics in each case. The season ended with enough loose ends to keep the series going as the writing was really good. Catch it, even it just lasted one season.

I didn't want to watch this at first because it appeared to be a warmed-over and dumbed-down version of Grey's Anatomy. If it weren't for Mamie Gummer's fantasic acting chops and genine camera presence, in some ways, it is. I've watched only seven episodes, but I can't imagine the overall tone to change. That would be like moving the literary tone from Danielle Steele to Tolstoy. The audience might suffer mental whiplash.

The formula for this series is the same as most prime-time soaps: take a cast of characters with major, adult, life responsibilities but poor interpersonal problem-solving skills and below-average maturity levels, and then put them into situations in which no one in the viewing audience would find themselves or seek out, and, if so, would never make the mid-pubescent decisions the characters would make. It's like putting middle-school children into hospitals, law offices (LA Law, Ally McBeal), or police stations (Hill Street Blues, Blue Bloods) and watch the moral, legal and interpersonal chaos unfold. It's a way of putting the Three Stooges into Crime and Punishment scenarios: character pratfalls and emotional food fights embedded in genuine existential crises and tragic, fatal outcomes.

Unlike the unstated formulaic character of most series of this sort, Emily Owens, MD, is simply stating clearly in bold lettering the actual nature of the series: adults behaving childishly. Adolescent behavior such as gossip, talking behind each other's backs, getting 'catty' and breaking trust are the principle methods of creating each episodes' conflicts. Throw in a few genuine moral dilemmas and puzzling diagnotic conunndrums and you have the recipies for a great mind-numbing TV series. (I can almost visualize Emily and one of the other female characters eating baloney sandwiches and drinking from juice boxes at lunch, discussing, using air quotes, whether they "like" or "like like" some dreamy male intern or resident.) It's Judy Blume with adult vocabulary.

The writer's have all they need to keep this formula going indefinitely and still collect their paychecks without reaching to grasp a genuine literary challenge in their script writing tasks. So, grow up! The producers wouldn't want it any other way. Grab the popcorn and enjoy: this ain't Twin Peaks. And no one is going to talk about the last episode at the water cooler tomorrow: that's Mad Men territory.

Mammie Gummer (Daughter of Meryl) has star quality

I just told my sister this is a good show. I was very surprised to see the review status... But then saw that was based only on 3 opinions. I don't think I have ever left a review before, but felt, I needed to lend this show my support. It's truly too good to let it go without a fight.

My sister watches a lot of TV and mostly I just walk away. This show held my interest. That's saying a lot without saying too much (no spoilers). This show has a polished quality that I first mistook for a film. Seeing the episode made me want to know more about this rising star who I didn't recognize from anything I had seen before. Daughter of Meryl Streep - NO WONDER! One picks up a lot from family members. Mammie seems to have picked up her mothers uncanny timing and charm. I look forward to seeing more of her as 'Emily Owens' or...?

Great but caution

This show has great acting - creative story lines. But it obviously has an agenda because almost 50% of romance in this show is between homosexuals. I have no problem with this except for its completely unrealistic. If you're trying to create a show that's real life, which is what this show is about, giving us a look into the medical field then stick to real life. But besides this- very very good writing! Actors are believable and show deserves a shot if you don't mind their agenda. Obviously there is plenty of new situations in a hospital with the ER, OR, and OB which helps this show keep your attention. If you don't have a stomach for blood and the insides of people- hearts, intestines, lungs, etc probably not the show for you.

As a female currently applying to medical school, this is one of the medical "dramas" (that usually has nothing to do with medicine) I find very entertaining. Instead of the suaveness that the stars of of Grey's Anatomy and House MD portray, Emily Owens represents the unavoidable socially awkwardness people face in the med track. I could see myself relating to many of her problems currently, or in the future while in residency.

Plus points for a diverse cast (including a lesbian woman of color and an Asian prospective gf for Micah). Love this show, and hope it continues for more than a season or two.

Emily Owens (Mamie Gummer) is a new intern trying to make her way in the hospital. Instead of grown up mature relationships, she finds that she's back in high school.

This is the traditional otherwise-successful-girl who just can't find love. For shows like these, it's all about the lead's likability. Personally, I like Mamie Gummer who is the daughter of Meryl Streep. So I like this show. I guess if you dislike that kind of awkward shucks outsider pretty girl, then you'd probably dislike the show. It was definitely disappointing to see it canceled after 13 episodes. It's too bad but shows aren't given a chance anymore.

This show is amazing… not just the actors but everything. I think it's real. Sure, there's not much of a love relation going on yet with the main character but everything else is really good. I like the fact that she's this real and nice character but yet has real human factors. She's a doctor, and also she's just going through the day with troubles that arises. I like this show a lot because it's witty. And you can really hate some characters in this show. So, I hope it doesn't get canceled!

Sure, I have to admit… the first few episodes were boring-ish but it gets better. And I love Emily's character. I could really relate to her and her everyday life at a hospital.

Watch it for Mamie Gummer!

I was interested to see the show after an obvious reason, Mamie Gurmer. I've seen her few times on TV and thought she resembles a great deal of her mother's charm, looks and talent and was I right? Absolutely.

Emily Owens MD might have all of the clichés with doctor series, but nonetheless, it has a good lead that stuck out. Tells the story of Emily Owens (duh!), a single doctor who begins her internship in a big hospital filled with big bad people,bossy doctors and attractive nemesis and lovers - just like high school. (I don't get why every movie and TV shows has to compare adult life to high school, which is monotonous,but in this case, it works)

Other co-cast was pretty solid too; from Smallville's Green Arrow star Justin Hartley as the attractive intern, Melrose Place's Michael Rady as the doctor who is a possible love interest, Necar Zadegan as the stuck-up boss, to Aja Naomi King as the nemesis slash possible best friend in the future. The pilot is still weak but I'm sure it will grow along the way.

Will be waiting for more of Mamie Gummer, sorry, I mean Emily Owens M.D.

Good Show

So far I've watched 3 episodes. I never liked this kind of TV shows but this show stood out when I was flipping throw the channels. no plot holes or bridge scenes so far, the performance is great, the show is character driven, they don't focus a lot on the gadgets. I've been doing some research my self on the medical terminology they use and so far they have been good. I get the feeling that the writing team gets a lot of say. watching the show makes me feel that there is a great team behind it. i think that the show will last for a while as long as it stays funny and smart. its a good show and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

We need more shows like this one

I can say at my age I have seen many shows come and go and hope this show stays at least 7 seasons. The characters are pleasant without being syrupy. Even the mean ones show the reason for their behavior. Emily at first seemed a bit strange but has developed into a believable young person making her life (mistakes and all.) The main reason I like this show is it makes me smile and thats the key. I did recognize most of the actors from other series and that's why I started watching in the first place. Mamie Gummer caught my interest when she did off the map another series about her being a doctor and set in a tropical setting so I was enjoy it and found it had been canceled. Love the guy who plays Micah and have seen him in several shows also. They also show another doctor who bosses the new guys around in the ER but not sure if I've ever heard his name but seems interesting. The key for me is this show makes me smile so please keep it going.

You know...I have been checking out a lot of the new premieres for shows this season and it's a relief to find one that is so good. I guess I am realizing some of the qualities that I look for in a show. Kind of done with shows that are cut together for the 15 - 22 year old short attention span with violence on the side, etc...

I really enjoy shows that are about the character's everyday life: where they came from; the experiences (good and bad) they are going through and watching those characters develop and change as the series progresses.

I love the lead character! "Emily Owens" is someone you can relate too and and is very likable. There is so much material to work through with her character and her willingness to grow. And since one of my favourite shows "House" ended last season, this provides enough medical investigatory type problem solving to fill that void. Plus the show deals with social issues as well to make you think about how you would handle things.

Love the inner monologue that we get from Emily as well...clever & witty.

The rest of the cast looks fantastic and the writing was great. Honestly - if you are looking for a show (in a hospital setting) that is a relief to watch and enjoy; one that is about relationships and growing in those - than this will be for you.

Mamie Gummer does a fantastic job...her humour is natural and subtle. Love it! She is lovely to watch.

Excited to see where the plot lines go with Justin Hartley and Michael Rady as well. Great actors! (easy on the eyes too!) ;-)

That's my 2-cents. Looking forward to enjoying this show...so happy that it's on! Hope it does well!

Awesome show! Great writing! Love the cast!

I thoroughly enjoyed it from the get-go. Sometimes, it makes me wanna face-palm in shame, but most of the time it delivers the laughs.

I can't wait for Emily and Micah to have more chemistry. And Cassandra Coppelson... Arch... the actress playing her is so effective. I wanna hate her even though I know it's just a show. ha-ha

I hope they keep this show going. I'm gonna be disappointed with the CW if they cancel it. There are so few shows left that are really funny, and this is one of the remaining few.

We've all been through what the characters go through and that's why it feels so personal. I'm looking forward for more episodes! :)

I am so tired of all the overly dramatic shows that have little to no comedy. This show is absolutely wonderful! True, it has a few kinks, but I think in a few more episodes, when all the actors become more familiar with each other, it will be perfect.

It is a hospital, so there is plenty of drama, but because of the quirkiness and the parallels with high school social standing you get quite a bit of humour as well. I love Gummer, I think Hartley is beyond yummy (though his acting is a bit stiff and so far he has mostly been "the pretty face"), Rady is adorable, King is the perfect "mean girl", and Zadegan gives me chills.

Can't wait to see this show grow and develop.

I loved this show from the very first episode. I was very iffy about watching it but have like all the other shows that have come on the CW so i gave it a shot and was addicted.

I like how they show how crazy and difficult the life of a doctor can be but they also show how down to earth they are during all of their constant craziness. It was really easy to fall in love with the characters.

I have heard that they are not going to sign it for a second season.How can they do that after letting it end like they did. I think a lot of people would agree. We need to see what happens next for Emily. Don't CANCEL YET! I WILL BE VERY DISAPPOINTED!

Grey's Anatomy for the Buffy set

This lasted one season because it's an even more annoying version of Grey's. The patients are younger the interns are younger and stupider and the lead has slightly more irritating mental illness. The constant voice over and music is lifted from Sex in the City so maybe they'll do surgery on shoes. First day of work you save a life while chatting with (like) a nine year old, talk about your boss's sexual orientation, get in a screaming match with that mean girl from high school. Even the respective rolls of the characters and casting is the same as Grey's. I bet though there will be a lot less rolling around on the floor having sex at work. In any case I have to put in the time because wifey eats this chick TV stuff up. Thank God it's only 13eps.

A Missed Hit

This was a witty and fun show. I liked the love triangle and light comedy. Too bad it only had one season. I hate it when they leave a person hanging, with no season to follow up the last episode. Bummer.

I decided to start because it was in my Netflix's suggestions. I quickly discovered it was never renewed past the first season, and what a disapointment! This show had a lot to offer. The actors are brilliant, the story lines were very interesting, you get attached fast to the characters. I just finished the 13 episodes and feel very frustrated that there aren't more to watch. Highly recommend anyway!

Gone too soon

While searching for a good, *clean*, upbeat series, I came across Emily Owens, MD. Had I known it was only a handful of episodes, I wouldn't have started watching it, but in the end, I'm glad I did. I confess I'm a die-hard Grey's Anatomy fan, and am always looking for another medical drama. Emily Owens had many things that would have made this series a solid show: good story lines; colorful characters; and seemingly good chemistry between the characters. I had told my husband that it reminded me a lot of a "G-rated" Grey's!

Other than Emily Owens, M.D. ending too soon, I'd say that many situations were far too predictable. Maybe if it had been given a chance, it could have gone farther.

A Great Binge Watch

Does it have the seriousness and medical intensity found on ER? No. Is it as "soap opera-ish" as Grey's anatomy? No. Is it as comical as Scrubs? No. Emily Owens MD takes the best elements found in the above shows. It's a medical drama with a splash of comedy and romance. The acting is good. The characters are likable. The writing is better than many of the shows that came out in 2012-2013. Emily Owens M.D. is enjoyable and entertaining.

I was surprised to find that show had been cancelled. I missed this show during it's original run, I am sure a lot of people did. Shows this good normally don't get cancelled after one season. It's a fun show to binge watch on Amazon Prime or Netflix.

Amazing!!!

This show is SO GOOD! I don't normally love medical dramas, but this show manages to combine medicine with humor in the perfect way. Emily is a funny and lovable protagonist, and her friends/coworkers all add a lot to the story as well. Because each episode focuses on different patients, it never gets boring, as each one has their own unique story. After one episode I was hooked, and it quickly became my favorite show. There's only one season, so I finished quickly, but I still managed to get super into it in that short time. My only complaint is the ending - I don't want to give spoilers but it ends in a frustrating way - but the rest of the show is so good that it's still worth it. I would definitely recommend!
