The Murder He Wrote
RedKidBytes6 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The original 3 part of the true-crime docuseries investigates the Murdaughs, the most powerful family over the past 100 years in Low County, South Carolina. The family last name led the office of prosecution for 87 years. They became a formidable force through their connections with local law enforcement, political leaders, and the owners of the local banks and businesses. Whilst holding public office of prosecution, their family members have also established a law firm with partners that provided them with almost an iron grip over all the surrounding communities.

On February 24th, 2020, Paul (19 years old) the youngest son of Alex Murdaugh, was piloting a speed boat whilst under the influence of Alcohol. One of the passengers, Mallory Beach (19 years old) was killed in the accident when the boat hit one of the pillars of the bridge at about 2:30 pm.

Paul's father Alex and his grandfather immediately entangled themselves in the event to cover up Alex's involvement in the accident. They blamed Mallory Beach's boyfriend and warned police that he was the one who was piloting the boat.

However, the event brought national attention and brought the Murdaugh dynasty under the microscope. What happened next was an unbelievable set of events that finally started to crumble the dynasty.

Although the details of the events have long been in the news, however, the documentary brings up the personal perspective of the people and the unfortunate lives that were destroyed. It's a well-done true crime documentary.

To date, the best of the Murdaugh documentaries
Wpdoyle13 February 2024
Saw the Netflix documentary first. But if you don't have the desire to sit through two documentaries on this topic, I would go with this one from HBO Max. Obviously, both of these were done before the trial, but for those interested in this case, there's plenty of information that was never uncovered during those five weeks of testimony.

Both this in the Netflix documentary include plenty of information about the death of Mallory Beach, Stephen Smith, and Gloria Satterfield, but this one goes into better detail about the financial crimes, and sheds some new light on the relationship of Alex and Maggie.

Yes, there is a lot of hearsay, conjecture, opinion, and rumor being put forth by the talking heads here (and in the Netflix documentary for that matter), so some of it must be taken with a grain of salt. But overall, Low Country gives a more complete picture of this heinous series of crimes, and the family that sits in the center of it all.

Murdaugh who?
laurafgriffiths3 January 2023
I've been following the stories around this family for years and it's interesting to see the visuals of some of the locations. But I don't recognize several of the people interviewed as being involved in the case. It makes me wonder if they were just brought into the project because they had a certain look. Which then makes the whole thing suspect, in my mind.

I'm trying to keep an open mind as I continue to watch and I'll be interested to see if the events as I know them are fully presented in an open and transparent manner. There are certainly a lot of questions that still need to be answered.

Fascinating

I knew nothing about this family so when I was passively listening to the trial while working I decided to watch a documentary to understand the family history. The HBO doc is far better than the one on Netfix. There aren't as many interviews with random people and their.opinions. Its unbelievable just how much questionable crime this family was involved in. I almost can't feel bad that Paul was killed as he was bad news and on an even worse path. I do hope they vigorously pursue the case of Steven Smith and his tragic death at a young age. I can't even feel bad for Maggie as she raised this monsters. Well done film.

Ok doc but has some pretty obvious discrepancies
rjvnatl5 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The series was interesting overall... BUT Ep 3 has some pretty obvious discrepancies... They show his wife on security cam supposedly leaving the house that night to go to the dog kennels after an alleged family dinner... then a short time later they claim that she actually arrived at the property that night at the husband's request (after texting a friend that she was suspicious and"he's up to something") and say she went straight to the kennels where she was killed.. so was never in the house that night... and they also say that the husband, son and wife were all supposedly texting back and forth in a normal way when they are laying out the supposed timeline but then pull this other suspicious "he's up to something" text into the narrative shortly after... which would seem to contradict the fact that their texting that night was all friendly and not unusual.... They state right after that the husband had made up the whole thing about the three of them having dinner (right after they've made a point of showing all three of them on security camera leaving the main house and at what time each left)

Also they said the husband left and went to see the mother with dementia for a brief visit that night before he came back home (and show him on the security camera supposedly leaving, coming back from said visit and then leaving again to allegedly drive down to the kennels where he supposedly found their bodies) and that her health aid saw him and said he sat on his mom's bed and seemed normal and at ease, but then later quoted someone as saying there was no witness to the visit other than the mother with dementia and that didn't really count as his alibi... so those are both pretty glaring contradictory discrepancies... was surprised that was not brought up before the documentary was released... Also they never even mention the guns other than naming them by type... never say whether they were found on the property or whether they police had or haven't divulged that information... Given the supposed tight timeline that does seem like it's an important detail as to whether he would have time to dispose of two weapons before calling 911 and whether the route to the Mother's care facility passed places like bodies of water where the weapons could have been disposed of....

The worst documentary I've ever seen
ezeis15 March 2023
This is easily the worst murder documentary I have ever seen. Very little actual facts or data. Just a bunch of ridiculous contradicting opinions and rumors. It's an absolute garbage production. I cannot believe somebody actually green lit this. It jumps all over the place. It is repetitive. The individuals that they chose to interview have no credibility. I am not sure why they even included most of them in this documentary. I would not recommend this to anyone. There are plenty of other documentaries, articles, and sources for you to get your information from. Sit this one out. This is so bad.

It's now been proven
XYandZzzzzz2 March 2023
Much of this documentary was nothing more than innuendo, rumor and gossip. HBO once again disappoints. It's just another HBO piece of garbage. Those "journalists" are not explaining fact but simply their personal opinions which is all journalists seem to do anymore anyway. It is obvious this family was doomed to fall. Now that the murder trial has taken place we know that much of what was intimated in this show by the journalists, especially the woman was never true. So disappointing. I think this man and family in general are horrible people. Period but that doesn't negate the truth or that lies were passed off as truths in this program.

Great

I'm following the current trial of Alex Murdaugh and so this is great to gain a more personal perspective of their lives.

I think it's well done and thoroughly interesting.
