Worthwhile Effort, with Some Problems...
NEVER SEEN AGAIN DANCING ON THE EDGE SUSAN WALSH PT2 (2022)
BASIC PLOT: Susan Walsh went missing on July 16, 1996. She was an exotic dancer, and investigative journalist. She had written several articles that could have put her in harm's way, but she also had potentially dangerous men in her life. Her ex-husband, Mark Walsh, was upset Susan was thinking of moving to Florida, and taking their son, David, with her. Was she killed to prevent the move? Mark's timeline and behavior after Susan went missing, concerned the police. He did file a missing person's report, but he went to the police station to do it. Police wondered if this was to keep them from the potential crime scene. There are several holes in his story, such as multiple trips to his parents house, and his timeline not matching the other members of the household.
Susan also had a violent ex-boyfriend, Billy Walker. Billy had threatened Susan on many occasions, and one particularly violent incident motivated her to contact the police. She received an order of protection against Billy. He was purported to be in the Italian Mafia, and even attacked Susan's live-in boyfriend, Christian Pepo. Susan was convinced Billy was having her followed. Could Billy have had something to do with Susan's disappearance?
Susan was living with Christian Pepo when she disappeared. His timeline for that day also has problems. David, Susan's son, gives a different account for the movements of Christian, and his father Mark, on the day Susan went missing. Is this just because he was 11 at the time, or is there more to it? Christian is convinced Billy Walker killed Susan. Could he be right, or is he trying to deflect suspicion from himself?
We do know several strange things happened the day Susan disappeared. Susan's Friend, Melissa, came to Susan's apartment. It was July, and they had no air conditioning. Normally, there were fans in the windows, but they had been removed, and the windows shut. Melissa had an ominous feeling, and left. What was happening in the apartment, and who closed the windows? The police found the month of July had been removed from Susan's pocket calendar. Why didn't she take it with her? Everyone who knew Susan said she always had her notebook with her. It was a habit from when she was writing articles for, "The Village Voice." However, when the police searched Susan's apartment, her keys, purse, pocket calendar, and cigarettes were all still there. Why did Susan, a chain smoker, not even take her cigarettes? Did Susan leave the apartment that day, or did something more insidious happen to her?
What happened to Susan Walsh?
WHAT WORKS: *Glenn Kenny provides a compassionate overview of Susan's life that's very helpful to the viewer. He knew her for over a decade, from the time she was a promising under grad, to her days as a 36 year old exotic dancer. He has sympathy for her, and his perspective helps us understand Susan in a more forgiving way.
WHAT DOESN'T WORK: Arthur Merchant, Susan's brother, appears very angry at Susan, even 26 years after her disappearance. He sings karaoke to channel the anger he still has at Susan. When he wants to vent at her for her downfall, he sings the song, "Stupid Girl," by 'Garbage'. It's a form of victim blaming; it's not good for anyone, especially Arthur. Susan's life choices did put her at higher risk for violence at the hands of men. But the victim is never to blame for these types of crimes, even if our societal admonishment allows us to feel safer in our own lives.
*Susan was having financial difficulties, even though she was dancing at several clubs. She was using a pay phone, because her own phone had been cut off for non-payment. Susan mentions in a documentary, two days before she went missing, that she had recently lost 11 years of sobriety, and was drinking again. Could she also have been using drugs? The police report states both Christian Pepo and Mark Walsh were drug users. This angle is never explored, and should have been.
TO RECOMMEND, OR NOT TO RECOMMEND, THAT IS THE QUESTION: *I would recommend this show for true crime fans, unsolved mystery fans, or armchair detectives. It's a worthwhile effort to bring forth the terrifying fact that 1800 people disappear everyday.
CLOSING NOTES: *I have no connection to the film, or production in ANY way. I am just an honest viewer, who wishes for more straight forward reviews. Hope I helped you out.
