- Frank and Chip Haubold were the first married couple to compete in the Olympics together. The year was 1936 and they were both gymnasts from New Jersey representing the United States. They marched in front of Hitler and were held in low regard because of Frank's German ancestry (much as was Jesse Owens). Their story is one of love , overcoming the depression, and working tirelessly not only to excel as gymnasts but also to be able to afford the traveling and uniform expenses that were a part of being on the team as they were no corporate sponsors to help them. > In their mementos are letters from President Franklin Roosevelt and New York Mayor LaGuardia. There are also newspaper clippings from Berlin, Germany and the 1936 Olympic games. There are also 2 Olympic medals- a bronze and a silver. The story begins in the roaring 20's and continues through the Great Depression, Nazi Germany, and World War II. But ultimately, it is the story of a special couple that overcame the odds to become champions.—Daniel Celestina
