We saw Soderbergh’s new film today and it is a gem.
by Peter Belsito and Sydney Levine, editor
Supposedly he wrote, shot and directed Logan Lucky although the writing credit goes to Rebecca Blunt, that is conjectured to be a pseudonym.
Logan Lucky
The movie is a low key, understated, hilarious, heist film with many characters who are mostly working class (mean Southern here). The principals devise an incredibly complex heist scheme that is a joy to watch and so funny that they could actually pull it off.
These shrewd ‘hillbilly’ types (West Virginia) go after the concession stand dollars at a huge fan car racetrack event (Coca-Cola 600 Nascar race). These dollars are moved to an underground vault through a large system of air tubes (pneumatics) and our crew figures out how to intercept and take the money in a variety of extremely clever and hilarious maneuvers. Timing is...

Following the stealth explosion of the early noughties that came with Metal Gear Solid 2, Splinter Cell and Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, we had our three founding pillars of the genre for all to build upon. On the one side, the ludicrously Ott plots and hilariously experimental A.I.-fiddling of Mgs and Hitman, and on the other, the super-serious, Tom Clancy-framed exploits of the leather-clad Sam Fisher.
Sure, there had been stealth games before, but none quite so perfected as these three, and going forward you can point to any game with any stealth element, and trace it back to what these three games nailed so perfectly, some after immensely important first instalments.
Going forward all three series’ have maintained high pedigrees, but as the industry slowly started to feast on its own tail by pursuing endless military shooters and open-world third-person action adventures (one of which,...

I should have seen the signs going into Alekhine’s Gun. Delayed consistently? Check! Sent out to die in-between major releases? Check! Here I was, though, hyping myself up for what could possibly be a nice little spy adventure. Even with Agent 47 returning to action soon, the stealth genre is always looking for fresh faces. Why couldn’t Comrade Alekhine join the legends of the genre such as Solid Snake and Sam Fisher?
In a slight twist on the usual Cold War formula, Alekhine’s Gun places you into the shoes of a Kgb agent. Semyon Alekhine is one of the best spies in the Ussr, and after his superiors are contacted about a ploy on American soil to escalate Cold War tensions, he is sent into foreign territory. Luckily, the man who passed along the information, Vincent Rambaldi, is a CIA agent whom Alekhine saved from German imprisonment years prior.

PlayStation Experience 2015 is kicking off in San Francisco today with the keynote speech. Sony set the bar pretty high last year with their inaugural conference, and their conference game generally has been strong in the last couple of years. Is this going to continue the trend, or is this where it all goes downhill? Let’s find out.
The keynote kicks off with an Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End trailer. The graphics are phenomenal. We see Nate meet up with his brother, Sam, voiced by Troy Baker, after a long time apart. It appears there’s dialogue options in the new game. The PlayStation friendly crowd cheered for that. No new gameplay was shown, but at this point, we don’t need it. And nor should we want it. Given the track record of Naughty Dog, Uncharted 4 should be a stellar action game, and the less we know about it the better.

Once again, we have the fantastic, the indomitable, the flying-fingered Jeri Jacqui! on the transcripts!
Some good stuff from yesterday. Since I was on the Maze Runner set (report here), I've read the book and have been itching to see what Wes Ball made of it. They showed it to some fans earlier in the week and it got some good twitter buzz.
Let's check out what Fox offered yesterday at Sdcc!
Maze Runner
Wes Ball (director)
James Dashner (author)
Will Poulter - Gally
Kaya Scodelario - Teresa
Dylan O’Brien - Thomas
Ralph Garman (Mod): Please welcome director Wes Ball, author James Dashner, Will Poulter, Kaya Scodelario and Dylan O’Brien. Dylan, as Thomas, an actor tends to want to use his environment etc. and you have none of those advantages with this character.
Dylan: Yes, there isn’t that much to go off of. Taking it in...

Lab Zero Games’ Skullgirls Encore is this week’s addition to the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection. Centring around the quest for the mysterious “Skull Heart,” Skullgirls is a 2D fighter that features a unique selection of combatants. The female centric roster includes an amnesia stricken schoolgirl wearing a symbiote named Samson, an immortal thief who can survive dismemberment, a shape shifting monster currently looking like a nun, and many other oddballs. The “Encore” upgrade released earlier this year added new stages and music, as well as balance tweaks for the fighters.
Skullgirls Encore will take the place of Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons, which leaves the Instant Game Collection on May 20th alongside PlayStation Vita title Unit 13. So if you haven’t downloaded either of those titles yet, time is running out for you to do so.
In addition to the usual free game, PlayStation Plus subscribers...

Just a few days ago, Ubisoft released alpha-footage of the newest installation to their famous stealth series, Splinter Cell: Blacklist. The video – courtesy of Xbox 360 Achievements – shows Sam’s years of stealth experience reaching perfection.
For years, Splinter Cell has been the staple of the stealth genre, along with the Hitman and Metal Gear Solid games. Ubisoft has made Sam Fisher one of the few mascots of stealth, known best for hiding in the shadows and striking when least expected. Darkness is Fisher’s best friend, and noise is his biggest enemy.
But Fisher has always had to rely on lethal pacification to get past his enemies. Ubisoft’s video shows Sam implementing his non-lethal talents – a focus previously unseen in the series – along with his remarkable ability to slip between shadows and perform silent take-downs. Ubisoft developers add some additional information over the video as well.

It’s only day four, and I’m already seeing my friends trying to sell blood in order to make a few extra bucks. Not their blood, mind you. It’s actually getting a bit weird. I asked where there were getting it from and they just started mumbling something about how things have changed and broke eye contact. I think I’m going to let my dog sleep inside for a while.
As always, if the game isn’t a Daily Deal or a Flash Sale, Do Not Buy It. More than likely, it will go on sale for cheaper sometime before the 22nd, and all of your friends will laugh at you. Do you want your friends to laugh at you? Do You? I didn’t think so… Now, where were we?
Saints Row 3 – $12.49 – Saints Row 3 is sophomoric, over the top and immature. In other words, it’s amazing.
