Erik Matti (Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles, Rigodon), the maestro Filipino director, really knocked it out the park with his 2013 hired-assassin thriller On the Job. Not one to rest on his laurels, his latest crime flick, Honor Thy Father (not-related to The Godfather spin off) has also been garnering much praise among critics.
But Matti is nothing if not versatile, and as such has now decided to turn his attention towards the martial arts genre with the upcoming film, Buy Bust. Although still just in pre-production, it has already been announced that the film will feature American-Filipino mixed-martial arts Ufc star Brandon Vera (Kamandag), and Filipino-Australian female actor, Anne Curtis (Blood Ransom, The Gifted).
Information regarding the film’s plot remains sparse, but if we were to hazard a guess we would expect gangsters, drug-lords and of course ball-busting police officers, all no doubt served up with a heavy dose of...

Filipino director Erik Matti had a very busy 2012, shooting a trio of films with erotic thriller Rigodon, effects driven action-horror-comedy Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles and Cannes selected crime thriller On The Job. He contributed a spot to The ABCs Of Death 2 this year but has been otherwise absent from screens since On The Job, with a number of projects in development but that ends on Christmas Day with the Filipino theatrical release of Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2.The scale of things is much bigger this time out with the surviving cast members from the first film - with the exception of Lovi Poe, who was publicly berated by the director for breaking her contract - fleeing the small town setting of the original...

Another week, another 10+ submissions for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar race. We're up to 15 official titles now (which means there are about 50 to go). We previously covered Germany's finalist list but they didn't go with the youthful hit comedy Oh Boy after all but with the drama Two Lives, which we highlighted as a strong possibility given its war themes and the presence of Liv Ullman in the cast list.
But the German news is just scratching the surface of what's going on in the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar race.
Finalists And Speculation
"Thy Womb"'s Nora Aunor won several Best Actress prizes at festivals
The Philippines
They've recently announced a list of 8 finalists although, to make things confusing, they are still willing to look at more films that aren't on the list in case of late arrivals to the cinema. But chances are the film will come from this list: Supremo,...

Although the appearance and behavior of today's featured beast varies widely from region to region, it's known through centuries of folklore as the most feared monster of the Philippines. Mainly regarded as their version of the vampire legend, the "Aswang" has also been described in stories and artwork as a kind of werewolf or other shape-shifting creature – often created as the result of a curse – which walks as a human by day and transforms into an animal at nightfall. Among the stories passed down over the generations, the most distinctive aspect of the Aswang is its hunger for small children (it's often the subject of fairy tales used to scare kids into staying away from the jungle at night). Even creepier, the Aswang's appetite extends to unborn babies as well; it's been said that a flying version of the beast called a “Tiktik” or “Wuk-Wuk” has the ability to suck...

Mere weeks after his Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles hit screens in the Philippines director Erik Matti is following it with something very, very different. While Aswang was an effects driven spectacle for mass audiences Matti's upcoming Rigodon looks to play more as a super realistic, mature audiences only sexual thriller, one that tracks the consequences of a married man's affair to its tragic conclusion. With a late November release date looming the full theatrical trailer has arrived here at Twitch, with English subtitles included. Take a look below. Yam Concepcion, John James Uy and Max Eigenmann star....

The first thing one would notice in Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles is how incredibly gorgeous the computer-generated visuals are, at least compared to other Filipino productions. Opening with a shot of apologetic soon-to-be-father Makoy (Dingdong Dantes) cramped inside a tricycle with an old woman and her haul of various innards, the film immediately showcases how perfectly rendered the digitally-rendered background is, with the overloaded vehicle breezing through vast landscapes that seem to be exaggerated depictions of what is really out there. Matti dutifully maintains the spectacle throughout, struggling only when he decides to replace his actors with computer-generated monsters that are quite unimpressive. [Ed. note: We have been told by the production company that some CGI elements were rushed for the Filipino release of...

Director Erik Matti needs no introduction to long time readers of Twitch. The director of diverse genre fare such as Pasiyam, Exodus and Gagamboy, Matti has long been a favorite around these parts. And while we wait for the chance to see his latest - Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles - on these shores he's cooked up a little something to tide us over.Matti is the fourth and final director in the Yomyomf network's series of Silent Terror short films, four shorts from directors around Asia united by the absence of dialog. And they may very well have held back the best for last. The official synopsis - A timid man's mundane life takes a turn when he's awakened by a vision of the Virgin Mary...

Veteran Filipino director Erik Matti (Gagamboy, Pa-Siyam, Exodus) makes a welcome return to the genre fare where he first made his name with the upcoming Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles. An action-horror film with some comedy elements, Tiktik was shot entirely in a green screen studio with Matti and his partners launching their own post production house to bring their vision of local folklore to the big screen in a way that could live up to their standards. For the unfamiliar an aswang is a type of creature from Filipino folklore, a beast that can look very nearly human but loves to feed on human entrails and - even better - babies. One of these coming after your unborn child would be bad enough. Matti's story pits...
