Season Four Review
Generally, despite its genial nature, I've enjoyed BBC's "Ghosts" sitcom, from the team behind Horrible Histories. It's more of the same for this fourth season, though I do wonder if perhaps we've wringed all there is to get out of the premise now.
With the Hotel idea still a while away, Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) decide to test the water by opening the gate house as a bed and breakfast. They start to obsess about getting a five-star rating for the venture, which increases Alison's stress levels, which are already high from dealing with the ghost's various demands. The ghosts obsess over the discovery of a new ghost, on neighbouring land but are shocked when one of their number passes over.
I've said in previous reviews of "Ghost" that the second season was a marked improvement over the perfectly acceptable first run. I thought the third season couldn't quite match that second, certainly not for pathos. This fourth run is about par with the third. Generally it's the season long story of the B&B that dominates the plot but there are, as usual, odd episodes which focus is given to the back story of one of the ghosts, this time it's Katy Wix's Mary and Laurence Rickard's Robin who get the focus. It's the same mildly amusing stuff that has proved so successful over the last few years.
As I say though, I just wonder if we might have mined this idea for all that it has to offer. A few of the plot episodes seemed similar to ones that we've seen before and maybe we've seen these characters do everything that they can do. The departure of one of the main cast might be a because of this lack of ongoing character development, or it might just be that the actress has something else on. But I can't help and think that trying to shake up the show a little might have had something to do with it.
I'll watch season five, but I'm genuinely worried about deprecating returns from here on out.
