Captain Phillips
Captain Phillips, 10.40pm, BBC1, Thursday
A year after the story of the takeover, by pirates, of the Mv Rozen was brought to the screen in A Hijacking, Paul Greengrass brought the real-life hijacking of the the US cargo ship Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates to cinemas. Tom Hanks is the big name star, of course, and his performance does not disappoint. Phillips may have a surface calmness but we feel the fear lurking somewhere close by. He's matched by the concentrated performance from Barkhad Abdi as lead pirate Muse, whose character is fully fleshed out by Billy Ray's script. Greengrass had form for edge-of-seat tension with 9/11 film United 93 and he repeats the trick here as the situation escalates. Gripping from start to finish. Read what Greengrass and Hanks said about the film here.
The Bfg, 3.45pm, BBC1, Sunday
Steven Spielberg was the perfect choice to take on Roald Dahl's.

“Indie sci-fi thriller” aren’t words we get to say often enough, even if the reason why is obvious: Making aliens, rocket ships, and the cold vacuum of space look real is expensive. Tribeca Film Festival offering “I.S.S.” avoids that issue by taking place entirely aboard the International Space Station, which becomes the staging ground for a proxy war when a nuclear conflict breaks out between America and Russia. That premise wouldn’t have been out of place in a collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury, and “Our Friend” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, working from a Black List script by Nick Shafir, comes close to maximizing its potential with help from a stellar ensemble led by Ariana DeBose and Chris Messina.

While the Cold War has long been over a second one brews between the USA and Russia inside “I.S.S.,” Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s frustratingly broad yet stylish space thriller that just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Considering the growing political tensions between the two countries today, this is a movie one might be tempted to adorn with adjectives such as “timely” and “urgent.” Except “I.S.S.”—a title inexplicably fashioned with three periods—is too generic a genre exercise to matter, one that vaguely orbits notions such as trust, selflessness, teamwork and the hazards of blind nationalism with the most simplistic messages to transmit about them.
Working from a Blacklist script by debuting screenwriter Nick Shafir, Cowperthwaite’s pressure-cooker outing is set sometime in the near future, introducing us via an efficient title card to the brief history of the International Space Station (Iss), founded decades ago...

Plot: During the war in Afghanistan, a U.S. Army Sergeant (Jake Gyllenhaal) is saved from capture by the Taliban by his interpreter (Dar Salim). After returning home, he discovers that the man he owes his life to has vanished and has a price on his head, leading to him embarking on a desperate mission to repay his debt.
Review: Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant is a welcome change of pace for the director. While Ritchie is well-known for embracing a cheeky sense of humour in many of his action movies (most recently in Operation Fortune: Ruse du Guerre), this one is more along the lines of his earlier Wrath of Man, eschewing any sense of levity to tell a profoundly affecting war story. BAFTA and SAG Award nominee Eddie Redmayne (“The Good Nurse”) recently chatted with Gold Derby’s Denton Davidson about his process for portraying serial killer nurse Charles Cullen. Redmayne goes to truly dark depths for this role in the Netflix psychological drama. It’s a noticeable change of pace for the popular British actor who normally plays heroic figures on the big screen, including when he won the Best Actor Oscar for “The Theory of Everything” (2014).
Redmayne takes us behind the scenes on how the script for “The Good Nurse” first came to him, what it was like working with director Tobias Lindholm and co-star Jessica Chastain, and the film’s wild success on Netflix. As for what enticed him to do the project, he tells us, “It had this sort of label of true crime, but as it unraveled, it seemed almost genreless. It refused to be boxed.”

First a little warning. I had the good fortune to see The Good Nurse knowing absolutely nothing about it except it was a Netflix movie starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne. I had no idea which one was even “the good nurse” of the title, and I was not familiar with the book it is based on, or even the fact it is actually a true story. For all I knew it was like a female version of Freddie Highmore in The Good Doctor. Netflix set up a screening for me at a local screening room. I sat by myself for two hours stunned by what I was seeing slowly take place, a turn of events I did not see coming as I realized I had the same experience in some ways as a viewer as Chastain’s character, Amy Loughren, had in real life.

During a career of 16 years that spanned numerous East Coast hospitals since the late ‘80s, real-life nurse Charles Cullen confessed to murdering at least 29 patients with a fatal cocktail of drugs he dripped into his victims’ bloodstream. That figure was only his confirmed body count, however. As a title card suggests at the end of Tobias Lindholm’s shrewd and absorbing drama “The Good Nurse” — a Netflix original that just premiered at Toronto — the real number of his victims was predicted to be as high as a blood-curdling 400.
Hopping from one job to the next, the serial killer went undetected by the authorities, with his connection to the unusual deaths remaining as an open-secret suspicion at every facility he worked at. In order to avoid legal ramifications, none of the hospitals reported him — they just made him someone else’s problem, as the story of any corrupt institution goes.

It took a pandemic and a lockdown for “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn to make a directorial comeback in Denmark, where he had delivered the “Pusher” trilogy early in his career.
“Sometimes the strangest things come in mysterious ways, and this is one of those,” Refn says of “Copenhagen Cowboy,” his Netflix original series, slated to world premiere Sept. 9 at the Venice Film Festival.
Since “Drive,” Winding Refn has directed the Bangkok-set thriller “Only God Forgives,” with “Drive” star Ryan Gosling; “The Neon Demon,” with Elle Fanning playing an aspiring model in Los Angeles.; and the Amazon Prime Video series “Too Old to Die Young,” starring Miles Teller as a grieving cop in crime-ridden Southern California. He was preparing another project set abroad when the pandemic hit.

No, she’s not playing a superhero (unless you are a lifelong Tanglewood member) but Cate Blanchett is heard describing how she can stop time in the new, strange trailer for “TÁR,” the mysterious upcoming feature from Todd Field.
It’s been 16 years since Field’s last film, “Little Children,” for which Kate Winslet received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, as did Jackie Earle Haley for Best Supporting Actor and Field himself, shared with Tom Perrotta for Best Adapted Screenplay. Prior to “Little Children” was 2001’s “In The Bedroom,” which accrued five Oscar nominations: Sissy Spacek for Best Actress, Tom Wilkinson for Best Actor, Marisa Tomei for Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay for Field and Robert Festinger, and Best Picture.
Field has spent the years since his awards-heavy films not-quite-getting projects off the ground, like a television adaptation of Jonathan Franzen’s “Purity” and a movie version of Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian.

Paramilitary private security companies have been increasingly in the news for at least a couple decades, seldom in a good way. The figures who take center stage in “Dogwatch” do not seem to fit the sinister side of the “mercenary” mold, however, much as they may look the part. Gregoris Rentis’ nonfiction first feature offers an absorbing if somewhat abstract look at three men variously employed as maritime guards — hired guns protecting ships in dangerously waters, particularly those not long ago beset by Somali pirates.
Flirting with fiction genre conventions within the documentary form, this sometimes arresting, erratically revealing film often most closely recalls minimalist dramatic explorations of martial masculinity like “Beau Travail” and “Jarhead.” It provides scant intel on the industry the protagonists serve, or even insight into their own individual lives. The former Jaime Lannister is a different kind of ruthless in “A Taste of Hunger,” a foodie film whose protagonist’s ambition is summarized by the opening epigraph: “If you ask me what I want, I’ll tell you I want everything.” Everything, in this case, is the restaurant world’s crowning achievement: a Michelin star, which since 1926 has designated the best of the best around the world. Only 2,817 eateries have been so honored, and director Christoffer Boe’s drama focuses on a restaurateur’s quest to become the 2,818th. The result certainly isn’t fast food, but neither is it fine dining.

The summer movie season may be winding down, but HBO Max is keeping the movie ball rolling in September 2021. HBO Max’s list of new releases this month is heavy on the film side of things – both in library and original offerings.
Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Sept. 1 finds all eight Harry Potter movies returning to WarnerMedia’s streaming service. They will be accompanied by The Goonies, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, and more. Later on in the month, Mortal Kombat (Sept.

“Aquaman” director James Wan has revealed the title to the upcoming sequel starring Jason Momoa in an Instagram post.
“The tide is rising,” Wan said.
“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” will open on Dec. 16, 2022.
The sequel will bring back star Jason Momoa as hero Arthur Curry opposite Amber Heard, with Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Yahya Abdul-Mateen and Dolph Lundgren.
James Wan directed the film, which brought in $1.13 billion at the worldwide box office and $332.9 million domestically when it opened ahead of the Christmas holiday weekend late last year, making it the first DC film to cross $1 billion globally since “The Dark Knight Rises.”
Wan and Peter Safran are producing the sequel, and frequent Wan collaborator David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is writing “Aquaman 2.” He co-wrote the original film with Will Beall based on a story by Geoff Johns, Beall and Wan.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Investigation,” including the ending.]
There’s something conspicuously absent from a large portion of “The Investigation,” Tobias Lindholm’s dramatic retelling of the 2017 death of investigative journalist Kim Wall. It’s hard to imagine another treatment of this story that would span six episodes while omitting any onscreen depiction of eventual convicted murderer Peter Madsen.
Some audiences may balk at the ways the HBO show (now available in full on HBO Max) removes some of these standard elements of biographical crime stories. In staying as close to its title as possible, though, “The Investigation” managed to address a recent tragedy in a surprisingly clear-headed way.
Much of that stems from the way that “The Investigation” handles the passage of time. Though the season spans months, writer/director Lindholm resists putting down easy markers to wring tension out of breaks in the case. There’s a sameness to the way it unfolds,...

The series will explore the complex real-life investigation surrounding Wall’s 2017 murder, which made international headlines around the world as one of the most notorious criminal cases in Danish media history.
In 2017, Wall went missing after she boarded a submarine to interview Danish entrepreneur Peter Madsen in what became known as “The Submarine Case.” The Submarine was found sunken the morning after the August 10 interview and Madsen was charged, and later convicted, of Wall’s murder.
You can watch a trailer for the series above.
Søren Malling (“A Hijacking”) leads the cast as Jens Møller, the Head of Homicide for the Copenhagen Police, alongside Pilou Asbæk (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) as the prosecutor Jakob Buch-Jepsen. Pernilla August (“Star Wars”) and Rolf Lassgård (“The Hunters”) star as Kim Wall’s parents, Ingrid and Joachim Wall.

While the Cannes Film Festival won’t be happening as planned this year, the French movie celebration earlier this week did reveal the official selection of titles that would’ve led the event this year. Among them is the latest film from Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, known in the English language as “Another Round.” Starring Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Lars Ranthe, and Magnus Millang, the comedy is co-written by Vinterberg and “A Hijacking” writer/director Tobias Lindholm. Watch the first trailer below.
The film centers on four close friends, all of whom are high school teachers, who decide to test the idea that their lives would be improved by constantly maintaining a level of low-grade drunkenness. Based on the first trailer, it appears the experiment spirals out of control as the gang pushes one another to further and further extremes.
“Another Round” is Vinterberg’s first film since 2018’s submarine disaster movie “The Command.

Several Sundance titles this year have inevitably addressed issues key to the #MeToo movement, many in sophisticatedly provocative ways — notably “Promising Young Woman.” Then there’s “Run Sweetheart Run,” which starts out as a crude Date From Hell thriller, then veers into garish supernatural horror. This latest from writer-director Shana Feste is a slick, flashy and trashy genre hash too knuckleheaded to be much fun even as a guilty pleasure.
Blumhouse plans a late-spring theatrical release, but while “Run Sweetheart Run” certainly has salable aspects, it requires the kind of less-than-discriminating viewership that is more likely to be found via streaming outlets. Universal has world rights.
An executive secretary who’s thinking of going back to nursing school, Los Angelean Cherie (Ella Balinska from the recent “Charlie’s Angels” reboot) is raising an adorable daughter alone. She hasn’t exactly been a frequent swimmer in the dating pool since breaking up...

You do not have to squint very hard to see Brian De Palma in Domino. Not literally, mind you … he doesn’t usually take his Hitchcock fetish to constant-cameo lengths. But he’s there in the ominous zoom-in to a gun that a Copenhagen cop named Christian (Game of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has left on a chair in his apartment. He’s there in the sequence of Christian hanging perilously off a tall building’s breaking rain-gutter, chasing after the man who attacked his partner — a Vertigo reference writ large.

“Hold the Dark” is a perfectly adequate film made by an especially talented director, Jeremy Saulnier. Alternately pulse-racing and somnambulant, it’s a thriller that starts strong before running out of gas.
It begins in the Alaskan wilderness, where three children have recently been killed. The locals suspect the culprit is a pack of vicious wolves. Medora Slone (Riley Keough) has a similar hunch after the disappearance of her son, Bailey (Beckam Crawford).
Enraged and scared, she enlists author Russell Core (Jeffrey Wright) to fly cross-country and help track down her missing child. Russell has experience with locating (and terminating) wolves. His acclaimed book details his grisly entanglements.

There’s more: Once Russell arrives in Alaska, Medora explains her situation: That she and her boy were left alone while her husband Vernon (Alexander Skarsgård) fought in the Middle East.

As we’ve seen from José Padilha, a producer and director of the immensely popular Netflix series Narcos, the Brazilian filmmaker has a unique ability in taking real life events, and making them ineffably, and impossibly cinematic, without compromising on the authenticity at hand. Tom Hanks is superb as the captain of a hijacked ship in a nail-biter that manages to tell both sides of the story
Two things about this riveting dramatisation of a real-life hijacking from 2009 tell you that you're watching a Paul Greengrass film. First, there is the urgent handheld camerawork, a directorial trademark refined and perfected by cinematographer Barry Ackroyd, which lends an air of pseudo-documentary authenticity to carefully staged reconstructions, putting us right there in the huddle of the action.
Then there is the wider perspective. While the title namechecks the American sea captain upon whose book this movie is partly based, our first encounter with the young Somalis who chase and board the gigantic Maersk Alabama is on the shores of their homeland, delving (briefly but significantly) into the poverty that drives fishermen to risk life and limb in pursuit of deep sea big game. For all its action aesthetics and nail-biting,...

★★★★☆ Tobias Lindholm's A Hijacking (Kapringen, 2012) is a refreshingly naturalistic, fictionalised tale of a Danish merchant vessel held captive by Somali pirates. Traversing the usual heightened testosterone and bravado of other hostage dramas, A Hijacking may be short on action, but more than makes up for it with an evolving atmosphere of anxiety and fear. Danish cargo freighter the Mv Rozen is currently sailing the Indian ocean, where cook Mikkel (Pilou Asbæk) will shortly disembark in Mumbai and travel home to see his wife and daughter. However, the moment we see him call home, we know exactly what's about to transpire.
A Hijacking's eponymous and inevitable assault peculiarly takes a back seat, with Lindholm transferring the action from the endangered crew to a company boardroom in Denmark, where hard-nosed CEO Peter Ludvigsen (Søren Malling) is currently negotiating a lucrative deal with a Japanese conglomerate. He's interrupted with the devastating news...

In the middle of this high stakes showdown is the CEO of the shipping company, played by Søren Malling. Tobias Lindholm has worked with both Asbæk and Møller previously in 2010′s simply titled...

Film has moved on from the non-linear jigsaws once used to depict our globalised state. Mira Nair's thriller dynamic and the subtlety found in Danish counterpart A Hijacking point the direction things are going
A year ago on this blog, I speculated about whether the fragmented, non-linear narrative that re-emerged in the noughties as the best method of tossing a net over the globalised decade's intertwinings and complexities was gone for good. Some people had questioned, especially after Alejandro González Iñárritu's Babel, whether the form had anything deeper than "We're all connected" Benettonisms to offer – a criticism that resurfaced in reviews of the Wachowskis' Cloud Atlas (well, I enjoyed it!).
The New Disorder – as David Denby termed it in his essay for the New Yorker – has certainly lost some of its timezone-flyby thrill, as maybe globalisation itself did after the credit crunch. But the world hasn't got any less complicated.

Magnolia Pictures has picked up North American rights to Danish director Tobias Lindholm's second feature "A Hijacking." The film, which follows the complex fallout after a cargo ship is taken hostage by Somali pirates, has had a strong fest streak, including Venice, Toronto and AFI Fest, where it took home the Audience Award in the New Auteurs section as well as some strong word of mouth. Lindholm also co-wrote AFI Fest entry "The Hunt" with director Thomas Vinterberg. Magnolia is planning a second-quarter 2013 theatrical release for the film. Below, some critics weigh in: The Hollywood Reporter: "One of the more unheralded standouts at this year's Venice, Denmark's A Hijacking (Kapringen) is a tensely economical study of leadership, teamwork and negotiation in high-pressure crisis situations… Working effectively with the professional actors in the cast, meanwhile, real-life marine security expert Gary Skjoldmose...

★★★★☆ This year's 69th Venice Film Festival opened with Bait 3D (2012), which dealt with the perils of entering shark-infested water. We return to the deep with the equally dangerous and considerably scarier human sharks of the Indian Ocean, in Danish director Tobias Lindholm's superb A Hijacking (Kapringen, 2012). The film opens with cheery chef Mikkel (Pilou Asbæk) aboard the cargo ship Rozen, bound for Mumbai from where he aims to head home to his beloved wife and young daughter.
