In so-called specialty box office... 2 indie films of note that opened over the weekend. First - The Obama Effect, directed by Charles S. Dutton (he also stars it by the way), and co-stars Vanessa Bell Calloway, Katt Williams, Megan Good, Wesley Jonathan and Glynn Turman. It opened in limited release in the USA (25 screens to be exact), and if you saw it over the weekend, I'd like to know what you thought of it. So please share in the comments section. The social media campaign for it was quite relentless, from my Pov, as there likely wasn't much of a marketing budget. So how did it do? Not that great unfortunately....

New In USA Theaters - 'The Obama Effect,' 'Family Portrait In Black & White,' 'Ballplayer: Pelotero'
First... it's titled The Obama Effect, directed by Charles S. Dutton (he also stars it by the way), and co-stars Vanessa Bell Calloway, Katt Williams, Megan Good, Wesley Jonathan and Glynn Turman. Here's the official synopsis which I think it gives too much of the film away: A serious health scare ignites John Thomas, an insurance salesman in his 50’s (played by writer/director Charles S. Dutton) to take a closer look at his life. Motivated by a misguided obsession with getting Barack Obama elected, John takes an overwhelming involvement in the Presidential campaign. While John becomes obsessed with the ideal of change that Obama...

It's a pretty slow weekend at the multiplex, most likely because no one wanted their movie to be sandwiched between The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises. Still, there is one major release hitting theatres and it is not to be underestimated: Ice Age: Contintental Drift. The last Ice Age movie made over $880 million worldwide... that's pretty insane. Elsewhere we do have quite a few interesting releases in select theatres including Rodrigo Cortes' thriller Red Lights starring Robert DeNiro, Michael Winterbottom's Trishna, Greek film Alps (from the director of Dogtooth) and the Swedish crime flick Easy Money (aka Snabba Cash). We also have a pair of solid documentaries in The Imposter and Ballplayer: Pelotero, plus a strange political comedy called The Obama Effect, directed by and starring Charles S. Dutton! What will you be watching this weekend? Ice Age: Continental Drift Easy Money (limited) Red Lights (limited...

A couple of weeks ago, we posted two clips and a poster of Charles Dutton's upcoming dramedy titled The Obama Effect, to hit select AMC theaters this July 13th, 2012. Here's the film's long synopsis: A serious health scare ignites John Thomas, an insurance salesman in his 50’s (played by writer/director Charles S. Dutton) to take a closer look at his life.
