a young man in distress
centuriontatum29 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I rate this fairly highly because the film is well written and the protagonist is well described and delineated. Everyone should watch this film so you can learn to avoid men like him. He is very unhappy and ungrateful and takes advantage of people (spoiler) especially women. So watch and learn. And if you meet and recognize him, or someone like him :Run!

what was the whole movie supposed to mean ?
alishendabadi10 September 2019
Really strongly I'm thinking what the whole movie was supposed to mean ? what we were supposed to get from that ? just see a man who is a real player and liar and sees different women . nevertheless the playing and theme song were good .

Representative of an Era

This is a good film that I suspect will live on as one of the most accurate depictions of what dating is like for millennials, particularly young men. Raw and brutal at times, soft and tender at others, it will speak directly to the heart of a certain kind of audience, therefore it is not for everyone.

Side note: how is Helen Rogers not a star yet??

A very real and captivating journey through the experiences of a young and single man in NYC
randymcbeast24 January 2017
It's very possible that many people will not relate to this movie but having lived a similar life in the past I can say that this one really hit close to home. It brilliantly captured the lifestyle and the feelings between various singles in NYC, with a very heavy emphasis on the man's point of view. Shiloh Fernandez being the man in this case, a role that he absolutely nailed.

The movie was just very well done overall. It could have been cheesy but instead had a sophisticated Indy feel and swiftly moved through the many different situations and relationships.

A very interesting part of the film is a not-so-subtle reference to 'Women', a 1978 novel written by Charles Bukowski. I'm only guessing here but it seemed pretty evident that writer Chadd Harbold was heavily influenced by this novel, and if that was the case he certainly did the novel justice. I'll certainly be checking out some of Harbold's other works.

Don't be discouraged by the low IMDb rating. This one is much better than the 5.5 it had at the time of this review and definitely worth the watch.

What do i say about this raw, beautiful film?
bcolebar29 April 2017
This movie is a very real and accurate portrait of the modern millennial man, and his disconnection from REAL relationships. I found myself weeping at the end because i saw my own face in James, as I'm sure many men our age will, and i couldn't believe that there was a film that so accurately depicted the culture of booze and one night stands. Searching for that great SOMETHING in life, but getting in your own way. I spent so many years on alcohol and drugs, going from one meaningless relationship to another, all the while leaving a trail of broken hearts in my wake.. Little did i know though that in the end it was my own heart that would be broken most completely. The scene where he has sex with lily in the hallway, then pulls out right at the end, refusing to even finish inside her, because he didn't really care about her, and that's all he wanted from her in the first place, not even looking her in the eyes or saying goodbye. The look on her face, knowing that she had been used, really made me feel like crap. This movie is absolutely aching in its honest beauty. From the acting, to the soundtrack, and the writing. Ill place this movie up there with some of my very favorites of all time.

great thought provoking and easy to identify with piece of art!
methodman-7025228 January 2017
Well i don't usually write reviews but seeing a movie like this get an IMDb score of 5.2 is frustrating to say the least.

you don't have to live in NYC to relate to James and the fact that we know nothing about his previous life makes it even easier. in fact we only know how he spends hid nights since he broke up with his girlfriend. he could be me or you or anyone.

He is a really handsome guy thus having lots of success with random girls he flirts. but this happens to be the problem, he gets trapped in superficial relationships and the pleasure of having sex. his ego is huge and seems unable to form any kind of spiritual connection.

his only way of dealing with the problems he faces is alcohol and women even when that's exactly the problem, he responds with even more women.

In general it's a great movie that shows exactly the vanity that overwhelms our world and how superficial and temporary human relationships can get. How alone you feel deep down trying to fill that void with sex and drugs! it's a 9 from me. maybe i am not that objective with this one but it's definitely 7++

What about love
abcvision20 July 2018
As a single man and life long bachelor. I can relate with the movie's premise: of a man seeking companionship and adventure. James the main character goes from woman to woman, each with a set of complex offerings. Beautifully made this movie captures the ins and outs of dating and discovering new adventure in the big city. Nothing beats the companionship of a woman or new conquest. Love does comes at a price and so does adventure. This movie harps on the timeless quest of finding the perfect mate in an imperfect world. Got to see the deeper value
mrinalkanti-0349830 June 2023
Not your avg dating movie. The mood of the night, the sensuality of a french movie. Love is backside tragedy here. What he looks for is a mentor who can stop him from roaming down a lonely city(travis bicklish!). Amazingly moody and thoought provoking soundtrack by redding hunter. The actings are solid. The use of color and shade to evoke inner personalities. The spaces between dialogues. You remember the falling in loves in your live and all the fu*ed up moments in a instance. Doesn't matter if all the characters are attractive and desolating against you. You see the beauty of one of the last masculine portrayal of wet dream and nonprovoking malegaze. Director took an average storyline and made it a memorable epiphany of coped out relationship isses. Just fu"kin watch and absorb. 8/10 easily.

Be who you are not who you think you should be

I love and hate this film, 20 years ago this was me and I didn't know what was going on with me my life, it hit a real nerve and I can see what an idiot I was. And the damage I did to both myself and those around me.

I do hope that others watch this emotional film about the chaotic life that drugs and lack of self worth can drag you into. And I hope that the experiences and knowledge that someone who comes out the otherside gains makes them into a better and more rounded human being.

Long nights and short mornings is brutality honest and true representation of how crazy things can get. And watching this has astounded me so much its like a mirror. It will not be everyones cup of tea but it deserves a better rating.

I love it because it was my life, I hate it because I wasted so many years living this lifestyle.

Great film but can someone help me and tell me something?
restlesspolymath27 April 2017
So I love this film. I stumbled on it online and then noticed fh y added it to Netflix so I had to watch it again it's that good. In brief you could say this is a depiction of how disposable modern dating is in these times especially with things like tinder. The style is also something that gripped me, the way each date unravels and it is very unpredictable which is something i can't say about most romantic type films. I would call this a mans rom com in a way but not cheesy. Just real and raw.

One thing that is driving me crazy and I really wanted to know is what is the name of the song that Rapunzel starts dancing to? I tried to Shazam it and also looked for it in the credits but can't find it anywhere. It would be appropriated if someone could tell me?
