Great way to integrate the short stories
Starbuck-1319 August 2022
There are a lot of one parters and short stories in the Sandman comic book series. Instead of letting them slowing down the next season, the showrunners decided to present two of them in-between seasons as a kind of Easter egg. Quite a good idea, as leaving out the stories completely would have been a bad idea considering the relevance of Morpheus relationship with Calliope to the ongoing story.

The episode is definitely worth watching even though the first story about the dream of a thousand cats is quite unusual. But Calliopes story is very well told and adapted, close to the comic but updated to the new millennium. I liked it a lot and don't mind some further short story surprises before the Seasons of Mist.

Great commentary on human nature... with cats
wbacjrx19 August 2022
A fun, dark, and thought-provoking spin to the Sandman series that continues to build upon an intricate, fascinating universe, incorporating new aspects of Greek mythology in a unique and entertaining way.

Plus, the intro has an adorable talking kitten and a scene that would compel any cat owner to give their feline some extra love after watching.

Looking forward to see where the series goes next.

I enjoyed the cat bit more than the real life episode
gs-subs20 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the cat bit, because ot spoke to me and I could feel the mums pain when her babies were drowned, we often wonder what a kittens mum and dad think when their kids are taken away and this is it.

I once was present when my ex partner had her cat put down and the cat crawled up her shortly before the injection at the vets, he looked into her eyes, he knew he was about to die, thats sole destroying, so was this.

Never thought it would happen

I have read the comics and the tv show has been amazing but there are a couple of comics I thought they'd never made! Here's two! Cats was amazing. It had to be animation and whilst crude anime it suited the story! Calliope was just as good. It made me hanker for more (especially Orpheus ! Just hope this all continues. It is fantastic to seek the universe come to life. I am so happy!!!

Perfection

Dream of a Thousand Dreams was one of my favourite short stories from The Sandman comics (issue #18, 1990). This adaptation is shot-for-shot from that comic. The dialogue is the same, the visuals are the same (but updated and animated). It's the book come to life on screen. What dreams are made of.

2 brilliant Sandman stories brilliantly adapted
bygranddesign20 August 2022
The 1st half of this episode is the story Dream of a Thousand Cats. This is a beautifully animated tale about how the power of dreams can possibly re-shape your reality. It stays pretty true to the source material and any changes only enhances the story as one rebellious kitty tries to spark the dreams of her fellow feline friends in dreaming of a world where they rule over the humans.

The 2nd half is the twilight zone-esque tale of "Calliope". Back to live action, this story delves into the dark side of ambition and the desire to create brilliant work no matter the cost as a young writer enslaves and abuses the muse Calliope in order to end his writers block and fulfill his greatest desires of being a best selling writer. This story is important to the overarching narrative of The Sandman as Calliope was once the wife of the dream king himself Morpheus. The acting is top notch in this episode especially Arthur Darvill as the writer Richard Madoc who gives the despicable character enough humanity as to provide us with that dark mirror that reflects back onto us. The beautiful chemistry between Dream and Calliope was also a welcome development and provided emotionally compelling drama to the story.

This episode is a great example of some of Gaiman's best work on The Sandman being *close* to fully realized.

Dream of a thousand cats broke my heart.
LayllasLocker30 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I live in a land where many people throw away (often drown) kittens and puppies. They do this because they are poor, mentally and financially.

People are poor because their land gets destroyed by some other richer country, so in the end, it is a global humanity failure.

One thing I can wish for these people, even if they are my own family... may you drown on your way out of this world.

So many heartless people and I can't understand how is that even possible. To hurt someone so fragile and defenseless. I hope one day things will change. I hope humans eventually evolve.

Dream of a thousand cats broke my heart...

Great writers team up
Jeremy_Blaiklock24 August 2022
I'm usually all for sticking to the source material as closely as possible, but where this episode deviated (In Calliope, 1k Cats was pretty much spot on) it actually served to accentuate the essence of Mr. Gaiman's story instead of override it, like in the Rose/Vortex arc. In re-reading that section of the comic after watching, I actually found myself mentally adding in the extra depth this episode established. To have an adaptation actually add to it's IP is a rare thing these days and a treat. Well done, show.

Human cruelty With twist
alaji-1137919 August 2022
For the first part, it was nice twist in dream world, a cat dream. Yet it has a message: to care more about cats and other creatures.

For the second part, it felt like more about greek mythologies with dash of sandman character.

Yet both parts where enjoyable and entertaining, showing another angle of human cruelty and creed, as some of previous episodes.

The first 6 minutes is the stone old hard truth. So many irresponsible pet owners out there. We have an ongoing crisis because of the abandoned and overpopulated pets in shelters and on the streets. Please spay and neuter your pets. Save lives!

PS beautiful episode, I loved the whole show.

Wonderful Calliope
pontram23 August 2022
I enjoyed the Cat Episode a bit, but not very much. For me, it looked similiar to the great rotoscopy animation series "Undone", but who does rotoscopy with cats ? The story itself had the intent to be moving, but it did not reach me, maybe b/c I genuinely could not do any harm to cats, but also do not like to have any kind of pet. Therefore, I am not in the target group for this tale.

However, the second episode is great. It is of/c very, very predictable, as if I would have watched a Sandman-version of "A Christmas Carol". Either way, acting and atmosphere/music (the latter very subtle) are on top here. Mellissanthi Mahut caught me unprepared for her sight of an almost angelic beauty. I really hope she will recur in other episodes to come, and in other shows, too.

The scenes with Calliope and Dream are simply wonderful, as they describe a former love and its downfall with a few words and gazes - I like the subtle more than big gestures.

Not bad.
lumina110420 August 2022
The story was decent enough and held closely to comic cannon. I wasn't a fan of just tacking it on to season 1, though. It adds nothing to season 1 and it doesn't fit the narrative of the season. If it had been released separately from the season, it would have been better.

No need

No need for the 11th random episode . Don't know how it's got the highest rating . It was boring and didn't go along with the rest of the story . First 15 minutes is a cartoon .

Best Episode
monicawylld12 September 2022
The Calliope section of this was so well done - I cried again (as I did when I read it and listened to the audiobook). This story gets at how society treats women in a whimsical bit of horror fantasy that allows the audience to suspend themselves into an imaginary realm to contemplate a true and actively happening story in our world today.

Also the Dream of a Thousand Cats is one of my favorite bits of this whole series in all formats. I could watch, read, listen to this again and again - and I have! They even brought it a few of my favorite voice actors. With an extra special audio appearance by Neil Gaiman to put the cherry on top of it all.

Hunamity's cruelty
athenabvb25 August 2022
As an author myself, I completely relate with the writer's block with man is experiencing, though the lengths he goes are horrible.

This episode showcases all the darkness residing in humanity. This concept is not far from the truth-just a bit of fantasy sprinkles. Humans are selfish, and cruel, and liars, and abusing, and hypocrites. And the episode does an exellent job in pointing that out.

Nice bonus episode
Kenjislamberry8 September 2022
I thought it was a mistake on imdb when I saw a 11th episode on the list . It is awesome we got a bonus episode .

The animation of the first part is well done . The second part is amazing .

I love chemistry between Morpheus and Calliope . I hope we get to see more of her next season and find out more about their backstory of how they meet .

Arthur Darvill is great as Richard Madoc the struggling selfish novelist.

Still no news on season 2 . Hopefully it gets renewed soon . There is still a lot of stories to tell . Please don't cancel it like Archive 81 Netflix and end it on cliffhanger.

10/10 Amazing episode.

What if this would've been Episode 1?
grinningelvis5 September 2022
The Netflix Sandman fails because it does little to illustrate the dividing line between The Dreaming and reality. As it stands, Morpheus is just a random character wandering in and out of plotlines. The pilot fails to illustrate just how long Dream is captive and what happens in the Waking World while he is trapped (WWI, mustard gas, blight, the flu, WWII, nuclear weapons, the computer age) and does little to express what is lost when he emerges. Setting up Dee and Corinthian etc as "villains" doesn't get to what Sandman is about.

This episode does.

Not only do you see Dream as an entity of imagination for the first time, but then you see Dream as a flailing, flawed, ultimately timeless boor in the second half.

Imagine going into the series with this understanding of Dream. Imagine if Dream's descent into Hell made a difference.

On page, Sandman's mysteries roll out in very deliberate form. But on film, the asides simply do not work. There is no reason to be invested in the messy silliness of Rose Walker and Barbie and Hal. Episode 11 works as a profound introduction to the kinds of stories that make Sandman brilliant and indispensable. If you understand "Dream of a Thousand Cats" and "Calliope", you understand where the story is going.

In the context of Ep 11, "Passengers", "24 Hours", and even the deviant Johanna Constantine adventure make a lot more sense. The muddled, rushed pilot actually lands in a real way, and the revelation of Desire's interference (however confusing and half-asses the show's revelation is) becomes a thing to drive the story forward (Dream has a history of failed relationships!?).

There have to be a roomful of writers working in this series. How could they not see that Ep11 is the only episode that ends up mattering if this series gets a second season?

Have they not read the novels?

[7.6] Would have liked the episode to be all animated
cjonesas7 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 11: "More than good" interesting of an episode with a deep fantasy messages, gorgeous cinematography, average to nice CGI and visual effects for the pleasure of eye candy lovers. Deep storyline and plots adaptation doing justice to the comics, a somewhat unrealistic and weak flow at the same time while the vibe is shinier, all the while telling the story in a mishmash way. The weakest link of the episodes so far is its convoluted, sort of slow burn storytelling, having all the bright ingredients, but sort of falling to efficiently grab viewers interest and attention.

The first part with the marvelous story-telling of the cats was way more interesting and enthralling than the second one with Calliope, too slow, sort of disjointed with an uninteresting flow.

A wonderful season Finale
moviesfilmsreviewsinc30 November 2022
As much as The Sandman is about telling long, sweeping fantasy stories about Dream and his siblings, the comic book series is often at its best when it focuses on smaller, standalone stories. The major story arcs are often broken up by these interlude tales. Dream himself often fades into the background, with the one common thread being that these stories explore the intersection between mortal dreamers and the world of dreams. The Netflix series already captured that magic through the stellar "The Sound of Her Wings," which faithfully adapts two early standalone stories from the comic. Episode 11 continues the trend, though in this case the two tales in question are treated as distinct chapters rather than two parts of a whole. That seems the right approach. Whereas Dream and Death's reunion transitioned naturally into the story of Dream's 600-year friendship with Hob Gadling in Episode 6, there's no real point of connection between these two tales. "A Dream of a Thousand Cats" is the more stylistically interesting of the two, given that it's the series' first animated installment. Unfortunately, it's also the weaker of the pair in terms of its execution. This segment is certainly faithful to the source material from The Sandman #18. It's more or less a direct adaptation of Neil Gaiman's original script. But faithful or not, there's a certain whimsy to the original comic that doesn't quite survive the translation to live-action. Part of that is simply the animation style. The rotoscoped animation applies an extra coat of paint to reality, rather than trying to channel the brooding, surreal quality of artist Kelley Jones' work. Nor does it allow for any added emotional expression from the various feline characters. The voice cast here is solid, but there's a disconnect between the vocal performances and the characters we see onscreen. Make no mistake, the story still retains much of its power in this new form. "A Dream of a Thousand Cats" dabbles in one of the series' most fundamental themes - the impermanence of reality and the unifying power of shared stories. Melissanthi Mahut also shines as Calliope, with a certain defiance that shines through even as her character is tormented over the course of several years. Mahut is at her best near the end, as she's freed from her decades of bondage and reminisces about her tragic history with Morpheus (which we'll hopefully see firsthand in a future season). Thankfully, this segment Madoc's repeated rape of Calliope as delicately as possible, implying rather than lingering on the act itself. All of this speaks to the show's appeal as an adaptation. It's not that different from the comic, but it generally knows when it needs to alter the formula and make adjustments for a more contemporary audience.

Calliope

Enjoyed the calliope segment, it was a brilliantly told short story. Acting was good from the whole cast and effects worked. Could have done without animated cat segment though.

Didnt even realize there was one more episode
garabedian12331 August 2022
But its more like the twilight zone set in the same universe as the sandman. These are great actually. I wish there were more than just 2.

The only thing is that there are a lot more people today than millions of years ago. So it would take a lot more than 1,000 cats to dream that dream.

There is a 600 character minimum now? Since when? I said everything i needed to say why must i keep going.

Does anyone else thing the sandman looks weird. Did they add any silicone to his chin? Because his mouth looks way too small for his face...still...really? More words needed....hmmm.

I forgot...is this related to spiderman? Or not?

Cat animation okay, second brilliant Sandman
cuvtixo-1320 August 2022
While at first I thought that bringing Sandman comics to animation might be a perfect match, the story barely integrated with the series (yes, I know there was that "dream cat", but, I thought it a clumsy and thin connection) The second part was definitely true Sandman for me, and the previous episodes provided some backstory, further integrating it as part of a whole. I think the 15 minutes of animation really belonged at the end. Especially since the animation itself was underwhelming. The live action has such amazing backgrounds and costumes and other graphics, I felt the animation should have been equally mind-blowing. It wasn't.

A terrible surprise! Very disappointing.
iditavrahami21 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The chapter suggests of women traffic and enslavement. She is an hopeless goddess, captured and abused by evil impotent men. In her missery she is calling her sisters for help but they practically blame the victim and her only hope is her ex, whom she hates since he was a terrible father to their diseased son. But since she is desperate she has no choice but to use his help to rescue her from the abusing master. And when she is free at last, the panishment and the revange are lame. The old author that captured her for 60 years stays intact and the new captive is released practically harmless.

The weak victim is left alone and the man who saved her is the big hero.

I wish this story was never told.

This is basically a big F you to every Sandman fan
radumh20 August 2022
Why? Because they're saying "Yea we could've done everything you asked for, but you only get this bit, because F you, we know better". The animated 25 minutes were the only ones that evoked feelings/atmosphere close to the comic, 25 minutes out of 700 or so. The Calliope part was well done, I enjoyed that too. I'm not entirely sold on Tom Sturridge, but eh, he gets the job done. Thing is, I'm pretty sure no actor could ever come close to the actual comic version, because Dream is not supposed to be human. He's not supposed to look or act like a human. And every time I see this version of him, all I can think of is... Billie Joe Armstrong. Or some My Chemical Romance version of him.

Good episode. Bad series. For so many reasons.
