“I could eat that girl for lunch / Yeah, she dances on my tongue / Tastes like she might be the one / And I can never get enough / I could buy you so much stuff / It’s a craving, not a crush,” she sings on the track, causing quite a commotion among fans online already.

2023 was a weird year for Asian cinema. Although the “usual” Japanese masters were here once more, the Korean movie industry seems to have taken a significant step back in the absence of any work from their own big names, while the creative powers that have been boiling for some time in Asean countries and South-West Asia in general seem to be erupting at the moment, in, perhaps, a sign that the epicenter of Asian cinema might be changing soon. Apart from this, Iran, Taiwan and mainland China continued on the same path of quality, Hong Kong seems to find a new way with social/family dramas, while the biggest surprise seems to come from Sri Lanka, with the country producing a number of truly great films this year. Lastly, the progress of the diaspora films and particularly Asian-American ones continues, with “Past Lives” being a worthy successor to “Minari”

Studio Ghibli, a scrappy Japanese animation studio that was founded in the ‘80s, would go on to become an industry powerhouse that surpasses Disney’s sense of fantasy, Pixar’s emotional catharsis, and the unabashed against-the-grain individualism of DreamWorks Animation. Hayao Miyazaki’s name is often synonymous with Studio Ghibli, the animation studio that he founded with fellow director Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki. Every Studio Ghibli film is special, but Hayao Miyazaki is an anime auteur whose cinematic offerings become pop culture events that redefine animation and storytelling.
Hayao Miyazaki is a renowned voice in traditional hand-drawn animation whose movies have record-breaking budgets and take over a decade to complete. And every time, they’re worth it. Miyazaki’s feature films may seem like playful escapism to outsiders, but recurring elements and themes define the quintessential Miyazaki experience. Miyazaki’s anime oeuvre may come across as intimidating and impenetrable to newcomers.

Gore Verbinski's blue-soaked, melancholic "The Ring" incited a wave of J-horror stateside upon its release in 2002. A new century always brings new horror rules, and for the early part of this century, those rules mandated imported ghosties with tragic, complex backstories. Unlike most horror remakes, especially J-horror remakes, Verbinski's "The Ring" is arguably stronger than Hideo Nakata's original, no small feat given Nakata's status as one of this generation's premier Japanese horror auteurs. Post-millennium anxiety, digital unease, and swelling domestic discontent coalesced into more than hospitable conditions for "The Ring" to not just succeed, but succeed remarkably. $249 million worldwide isn't bad by any metric.
Beyond Verbinski's assured control of the material, the cast of new and familiar faces helped augment "The Ring's" most enduring scares. While Naomi Watts might be front and center, Daveigh Chase's contributions as chief baddie Samara Morgan cannot be overstated. With a dense,...

Netflix added another title to its rapidly expanding Japan live-action originals slate Wednesday with the announcement of the romantic drama series Beyond Goodbye.
The series is an original story by prolific Japanese screenwriter Yoshikazu Okada (Bl Metamorphosis, The Last 10 Years). It co-stars Kasumi Arimura, known for the Japanese blockbuster We Made a Beautiful Bouquet and the Netflix feature Call Me Chihiro, and Kentaro Sakaguchi, a TV drama regular and recent star of the feature drama success The Last 10 Years (2022).
The film tells the story of Saeko (Arimura), who suddenly loses her fiance Yusuke in a tragic traffic accident. As she tries to overcome her grief, she meets Naruse (Sakaguchi), a man who strangely reminds her of Yusuke. Little does she know that Naruse had received Yusuke’s heart a few months prior to their encounter — a heart still in love and holding all the memories of Yusuke and Saeko’s relationship.

Netflix is to release its Japanese live action film “Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead,” on Aug. 3.
The horror comedy film is based on the hit manga (comic book series) by Aso Haro and Takata Kotaro that debuted in the Shogakukan magazine Monthly Sunday Gene-x in October 2018. It has also spawned an animated series that plays on Hulu in North American and other territories.
The underlying comic is a wackily original melding of the salaryman gag manga – a popular genre in Japan seldom exported abroad – with the sort of zombie holocaust story that has become a Hollywood staple.
The story follows overworked office worker Akira (portrayed by Akaso Eiji) who, in the wake of a zombie apocalypse, is more excited at not having to go to work than worried about fending off the undead. He comes up with 100 things to do before turning into a zombie himself and embarks...

Rikiya Imaizumi has been quite prolific during the last few years, coming up with two movies every year since 2019, with all of them being definitely above average. “Call Me Chihiro” however, which is based on the manga series “Chihirosan” by Hiroyuki Yasuda, seems to be his best so far.
Click the image below to follow our Tribute to Netflix
As the story begins, we meet Chihiro, a 29-years-old woman working at a bento stall at a seaside town, catering to the regulars, most of whom men who seem to be particularly fond of her, both for the overall warm and friendly attitude and for the fact that she is quite open about her previous job at a massage parlor. It seems that that is actually the role Chihiro has chosen to play in the particular setting, as a kind of guardian angel for all the lonesome and troubled souls of the area.

The month of February ended with a number of newer Netflix releases dominating its weekly Top 10. "How do you know my name?" Welcome back, Chihiro! GKids has revealed an official trailer for a special event coming up in April - screenings of a taped version of the Spirited Away stage production put on in Tokyo last year. Studio Ghibli approved two stage show versions of their classics last year - Spirited Away in Tokyo, and My Neighbor Totoro in London. GKids' annual Ghibli Fest USA 2023 is back in theaters and bigger than ever – highlighting all ten of Hayao Miyazaki’s iconic animated films with Studio Ghibli, as well as the first-ever North American screenings of Spirited Away: Live On Stage, featuring two performances filmed during the production's acclaimed run in Tokyo last year. The show starred Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi as Chihiro in two unique shows. They'll be showing this taped version on the big screen at cinemas around the US on April 23rd & 27th - it'll probably sell out.

Call Me Chihiro is a movie directed by Rikiya Imaizumi starring Kasumi Arimura. With Lily Franky and Jun Fubuki. It is based on a manga by Hiroyuki Yasuda.
This movie seeks enchanting the viewer with the always charming presence of Kasumi Arimura in a movie created for her in which she manages to bring that “special touch” of special manga by Hiroyuki Yasuda.
Movie Review Call Me Chihiro (2023)
This movie is all about taking its time in order to describe the characters and the situations, the inner world and, above all, that poetic world that extends itself beyond the narrative, which is apparently simple and even uncomplicated if considered from a classic way, but is essentially paused and reflective, a very beautiful movie.
Call Me Chihiro is, above all a movie in which the lead character knows how to seduce the viewer and displays herself exactly as she is: this...

Love is in the air on Netflix in February, from new romcoms like the Reese Witherspoon-starring “Your Place or Mine” to the return of murderous stalker Joe Goldberg in “You” Season 2 part 1.
Penn Badgley has long dispelled any misnomers of his “You” character being a romantic, but Joe himself still believes that’s who he is at his core. After killing his wife and faking his own death, Joe sets off for Europe so he can find Marianne (Tati Gabrielle), the woman he convinced himself he’s in love with before she learned the truth and fled. But breaking old habits has never been easy for old Joe, who quickly gets caught up in a most dubious clique of London high society that has its own struggles with lust, power, and the occasionally fatal crime.
