Director Rafaela Gonçalves cites Some Like It Hot (1959), To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995) and The Mask (1994) as references in the making of this film. Such titles were reportedly introduced to her by her mother.
The idea was conceived in 2014, but director Rafaela Gonçalves found difficulties in developing a realistic portrayal of drag queen life. "Back then, there was no research material and I'm not a drag queen. And then RuPaul's Drag Race (2009) became a hit [in Brazil], which ignited [drag] parties and events in São Luís. So started to live this moment."
Túlio's comedic, over-the-top news program is actually how local televised journalism is made and broadcast by local networks in Brazil, particularly in the countryside of Maranhão.
