What starts as an oil and water rivalry quickly turns to butterflies and bulging swim trunks as the faux-couple acts the part. The story unfolds in Sydney, Australia, and follows the couple as they experience a variety of vacation-related mishaps, including falling from boats and discovering spiders down their pants. It’s Only the End of the World: Polanski Checks Out with Broad Satire
As many are likely to avoid The Palace, the latest film from persona non grata Roman Polanski, as those who deign to (are even able to) watch it will likely deride it. Turning ninety years of age this year, there’s something to be said for an auteur of his age delivering something so nonsensically innocuous with a satire on elitist, obnoxious hotel guests getting obliterated at the turn of the century in a swank Swiss hotel. Though what that something is, at best mixed, which is unfortunate if it will stand as his swan song.…...

Public Image Ltd. have shared End of World, their first album in eight years. Listen to John Lydon and company’s latest effort below via Apple Music and Spotify.
The band began work on End of World in 2018, but they really experienced a “massive explosion of ideas” after the pandemic. When they announced the record back in April, the news followed the recent passing of Lydon’s wife, Nora Forster. The album cut “Hawaii” was written for her.
The follow-up to the 2015 release What the World Needs Now…, End of World also features the singles “Penge” and “Car Chase.” Next month, Public Image Ltd. will embark on a tour of the UK and Europe, and tickets are on sale here.
Earlier this summer, Lydon became the latest artist to warn us that AI could soon pose a threat to society as we know it. “What or where is the moral code?...

Abel Gance’s first sound film is among the most notorious what-ifs of cinema alongside The Magnificent Ambersons and much of Erich von Stroheim’s filmography. The version that was released in theaters back in 1931 and which survives today represents a tattered remnant of its maker’s original vision: a three-hour opus intended to spread a message of world unity and pacifism as Gance’s final word on the aftershocks and moral lessons of World War I. But producers immediately took out the pruning shears, reducing the film to half its intended length and, in the process, muddying its bold, operatic themes.
Compared to Gance’s towering silent epics, End of the World cannot help but feel like a curio. Still, it’s as if Gance knew the path that the film would take, as the first images of The End of the World consist of the director himself, as protagonist Jean Novalic,...

1. What made you want to get involved in the film industry?
Growing up watching comedies that had Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor and the Wayans Brothers made me want to be a comedic actor. They were so funny watching them inspired me to make comedy skits that’s how I started out on youtube, But later ended up being so much more than just a comedic actor.
2. From script–to–screen, how close did Scared Crazy come to its original vision?
Scared Crazy actually came out better than what I wrote see the Crazy thing about Scared Crazy is most it is improvised, I would say about a good hour of it is.
3. What was your favorite day on set and why?
My favorite day was honestly the last day because this was such an exhausting movie to get done having to learn all the special effects and even playing 4 characters it was rough,...

George Pal’s second science fiction classic has conceptual imagination and visual wonder to spare, along with a million awkward and dated details. When rogue planets threaten to obliterate the Earth, a super-Ark spaceship is built to spirit forty ‘chosen ones’ to safety. The Ark passengers have the right stuff, but you may be enraged by the rigged process to select who gets to go. Gee-whiz spectacle is the order of the day — how many End Of The World movies actually show terra firma expunged from the Solar System? Barbara Rush and John Hoyt are the acting standouts, but top honors go to Pal’s visual effect artists and designers.

As though the double helping of Deer Tick Vol. 1 & 2 wasn’t ambitious enough, Deer Tick is back with a fresh album of bonus tracks and alternate takes from 2017’s dual LP titled Mayonnaise, including a jangling cover of George Harrison’s “Run of the Mill.”
Originally released on the former Beatles’ solo debut, 1970’s All Things Must Pass — an even more sprawling triple LP — “Run of the Mill” gets a thoughtful, straightforward reading from the Providence, Rhode Island, ensemble, with a wall of layered guitars and a slightly pained vocal from Dennis Ryan.

For all his stylistic faults, French-Canadian film festival darling Xavier Dolan has never lacked confidence. From his personal and intimately-scaled debut I Killed My Mother to his most recent misfire of oppressively shouted cinema It’s Only the End of the World, Dolan has never struggled to express himself. The value of some of those expressions aside, his melodramas are typically narratively and stylistically self-assured; featuring people feeling things and then yelling about them at each other in close-up followed by slow-motion montages set to pop music that are either melancholic or cathartic depending on what part of the story we’re in. And they do seem to work for people, especially those of a certain age (myself included) that can relate to blasting 90s alt-rock in your room because you’re mad at your mom.

The Toronto Film Festival has landed the world premiere of The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, Canadian director Xavier Dolan’s drama starring Jacob Tremblay. The pic will screen as part of Tiff’s Special Presentations program.
The pic traces the story of a young actor (Tremblay) as he reminisces on the letters he once shared with an American TV star (Harington), who passed away a decade earlier, and the impact those letters had on both their lives. Natalie Portman, Ben Schnetzer, Susan Sarandon, Jared Keeso, Kathy Bates, Thandie Newton, Emily Hampshire and Sarah Gadon co-star.
“In only a few short years, Xavier Dolan has drawn film lovers all over the world into his personal vision,” Tiff artistic director Cameron Bailey said. “That vision and his remarkable skill as a filmmaker are on full display in his English-language debut. We are honoured to premiere it in Toronto.”

It’s amusing in some sense how the end of the world will be brought about by mankind in many movies. We are the authors of our own destruction and our own worst enemies after all since we tend to think too far ahead and assume that we’re smarter than everyone else around us. That however gets us in trouble quite often since it’s been observed in many humans that being two to three steps ahead is not always the perfect plan. But in movies the end of the world is more of a knee-jerk reaction something that people tend to
