Good story with a horrible ending (no spoilers)
shoit-3311615 September 2023
The story was good up until the last two episodes which ruined the entire storyline for me. The first eight episodes were good and ended with a twist that had me wanting to see where the main story was headed. Once I saw the main twist and where things fell into place, I actually laughed out loud and almost turned off the TV before the episode ended.

I know the series is based off a book, so they had to follow the same storyline. This could have been so much better with a different ending. The author should have went a different route on what was causing all the mystery and suspense. If the show is renewed for a second season, I will definitely not watch it.

Great story with excellent cast
Thorgal6719 September 2023
I have to be honest and say that the first episode did not really blow me over. I am one of those people who want to know in what direction a series is going, before investing time in what in the end could turn out to be a disappointment. And "The Other Black Girl" is one of those series that you cannot judge by just one episode (as compared to more mainstream series).

But I'm so glad a continued watching and saw the multi-layers of this cross between "The Devil wears Prada", "Get Out" and "Rosemary's Baby".

A wonderful series, great acting, many twists and a thoughtful social commentary without trying to push it in your face.

One of the best tv series in the last 10 years
lubienestle23 October 2023
Very entertaining, and there was a lot of suspense. Every character was different, many layers. Actress 'Hazel' - great actress, deserve roles in theatres in blockbusters. I liked every other role too, hovewer white males was... kinda boring and not there. I liked the plot and I am glad we have an ending without cliffanger. My only regret - episodes are to short. I prefer 5x 50 minutes instead 10 x 20 minutes.

Show is fresh, original. I reccomend it to everybody. Taking 2 stars for episodes length and nose rings - I dont like to watch them on anybody. But earrings was so beautiful, every women had amazing earings. Costumes was also good.

Worthwhile: Excellent Cast, and Quirky Dark Script
seemingly_reel23 September 2023
This is one of the more enjoyable new programs on Hulu (Sept. 2023). All of the lead roles are wonderfully portrayed. I look forward to Season 2, where we will likely get a back story on Nella's character. I especially like the interpretation from these lead actors: Sinclair Daniels (Nella), Ashleigh Murray (Hazel), Garcelle Beauvais (Diana), and Brittany Adebumola (hilarious as Malaika). Sadly, I feel that Hunter Parrish as Owen (Nella's beau) has been miscast. I get no genuine chemistry between them, and he appears awkward in most scenes.

The plot and stylistic approach seem to be a mashup of "Stranger Things" and "Get Out". There are also some cartoony vibes and dark humor. Although I've not read the book, it seems like it might be influenced by Octavia Butler (Black SciFi female writer who is well respected). Overall, this show doesn't take itself too seriously, and this is a positive. There are themes explored which reflect an interesting perspective on Black culture. That said, the sequencing of the writing became disjointed, and resulted in some tension being deflated. Specifically, the writers chose to reveal key info in Episode 8, and I think they would have done better to reveal more subtle hints as early as Episode 4.

Didn't Read the Book, So Only Judging the Show
FunRun2230 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
If I had to describe this show, it would be Get Out meets They Cloned Tyrone, especially with the twist reveal. It also reminded me of Sorry to Bother You.

I got curious about the show after seeing the trailer. The biggest criticism I have for the show is the use of red herrings. I know they wanted to keep it ambiguous over what was really going on at Wagner, but I feel like once you find out the twist, the red herrings don't make sense, like the supernatural moments. Why was Nella seeing ghosts even when she was awake? What was causing the lights to flicker everywhere? It doesn't get explained and you are left with the realization that those were just trailer scenes to mislead viewers, which is disappointing.

Overall, I was kept in suspense and found the characters likable. I was worried about Nella and her friend who is the voice of reason in the show.

I've never read the book this show was based on, so I can't speak for what changes were made in the adaptation process. I did roll my eyes occasionally at some of the political takes in the show (yes, I'm black. We're not a monolith), but they weren't so heavy-handed that I couldn't enjoy myself. The white boyfriend was almost a non-entity. I know Nella has a white boyfriend in the book, but in the show, he almost serves no purpose. Most of his scenes could be cut out and just replaced with more scenes of the best friend, Malaika. It seemed like the writers went out of their way to write an inoffensive white guy, and went too far into making him boring. You can write interesting nerdy white guys who are more eager to join the mystery plot.

I didn't mind the twist because I had already seen They Cloned Tyrone, so if you couldn't suspend your disbelief there, you won't be able to here either. Overall, I would recommend this show to others, but give them a heads up on the flaws of series. It's not for everyone.

Sooooo good
jward-5595615 September 2023
Just binge watched all 10 episodes and WOW! I'm hooked! Suspenseful, thrilling, funny, and sooooo many twists. Kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I kept saying ok, just one more episode and then I'm going to bed. But of course I ended up watching the entire season in one sitting. It was so freaking good! Last episode was such a cliffhanger so now I know there will definitely be a season 2 and I cannot freaking wait. Y'all, Seriously this is the best show I've watched in years. Please go watch it now. I promise you won't regret it. I have never left a review on here and had to create an account just to leave this review lol.

Great suspense!
gqytwdzv14 September 2023
Now I want to read the book that the series is based on. The acting and writing are great, and the twists and turns between the two main characters, Nella and Hazel, are excellent and will keep you guessing from episode to episode.

I don't usually binge watch, but the end of every episode was filled with such a cliff hanger that I felt compelled to watch the next episode. It even made me put down my knitting!

Hulu has produced some great original movies and series. I would encourage folks who are into suspense and drama to give this a try.

My only complaint is that the chemistry between Nella and her BF seem forced, if not non-existent, and also, her best friend is a little extreme. Both took me out of the "willing suspension of disbelief," but the show was otherwise worth my time.

Ridiculousness
foreverlovejep19 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's supposed to be about systemic racism BUT the execution of it is so cloudy and abstract. The premise is ridiculous. A black woman controlling other black women (a cult) with a special hair grease. Huh??? I only stuck with it because the first few episodes were so mysterious and I wanted to know what the big secret was. If it wasn't for Malaika, this series would have lacked being entertaining. Of course she played the typical, ghetto acting best friend who is always down for a fight. I was really lost is whatever the author of this story was trying to say. If anyone understands it, please explain!

Thought-provoking social thriller infused with magic realism
Film_Diva15 September 2023
I only intended to watch the first episode, but I couldn't stop. I *had* to find out what happened, and I wasn't disappointed, even though I stayed up way too late to finish it.

It's a tribute to the actors that they were able to show the increasing layers of their characters as the story went on and became more complex. Multiple sides of many issues emerged, and one important lesson I took away from The Other Black Girl is that there are no easy or simple answers to problems. It left me wanting more, and it seems that there is more to this story than one season revealed. So, let me just say: bring it on!

Be so Effing For Real. Dont Watch This!
harrisjayda-0635822 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What?! Look, the show isn't bad if you were to take out a couple of concepts. I like the idea that this other black girl is secretly out to get the only other black girl in the workspace. The smile in your face, but will stab you in the back kind of thing is intriguing. But, this show is not that. Yes, the other black girl IS trying to get the MC into her cult BUT hell, if I'm being honest, id sign up voluntarily. Id become a strong, independent successful black woman with a great job and great opportunities? Whats so scary about that?! And this show has a couple of scenes where the MC sees a ghost in her reflection? But thats never explained?

And then turns out the other black girl uses hair grease to mind control people? HUH? Be so serious. Who thought this was a good idea?

This series is riveting and spot on to the journey of many black women rising within our respective careers. To witness the experiences that so many black women live etched out on screen in a way that beautifully personifies the pain, the challenges, and the hope that many of us work to balance on a daily basis is an invigorating journey. You will be coaxed to laugh, pushed to cry, and inspired to ponder the question of what such a powerful and beautiful race of people can accomplish if we could let go of the pervasive pain of slavery's haunting past. Well done, Miss Harris. Season 2...#UpNext please...

Great story with talented actresses
flakaa16 September 2023
As a person that has not read the book before watching the show, I didn't feel as I was missing any information. The way the story is told, keeps the mystery and the watcher is able to feel as confused as the protagonist. I enjoyed it and I'm excited to watch the next season. The world needs more stories like this that represents the issues and typical work situations that black people experience in mostly white work environments, which makes the story relatable to our day to day and offers a point of view for white people that it's not seen often in media but that it's much needed for everyone. Of course adding the mystery/magical pieces makes it very interesting and unique. Loved it!

Someone was confused
drijc125 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Why does a Black woman have to be in a cult and under the control of magic in order to be successful and beautiful? How is it that a Black woman that is articulate and well dressed is betraying her ethnicity? The message that was intended would have been worth watching but the message that was shown was a confused version of the idea and disappointing on numerous levels. I truly hope the book was better and achieved the goal attempted by the series. Even the book in the show portrayed Black people as violent and unloving according to the disclosed original ending. The topper for me was how all of this was supposed to be okay because it was at the behest of a Black woman. Hollywood can do better and this is just one more example of a miss.

Just as good as the book
lafemmeco-6305120 September 2023
The book was intriguing I read it last year and the series is just as good as the book. It makes me wonder if the author wrote the adaptation. I like the changes made for the series because it surprised me. This is the only adaptation of a book I've ever watched that I thought was just as good as the book, usually I'm disappointed.

I'm not done watching yet and I can't wait to see what Nella gets herself into next and what her nemesis's do as well. This series is suspenseful, intriguing and heart wrenching to watch you feel like your right their in it with Nella, her best friend and boyfriend plotting.

An Original, Edge-of-Your-Seat Series
stepofhan4 October 2023
I'll keep it real. During the first 10 or so minutes of the pilot, I wasn't really feeling this show. It felt too cliché in all the horror elements that Stranger Things did 10x better.

But then I kept watching. And I. Couldn't. Stop. I'm truly blown away by the originality of these writers to construct episodes and plots I have yet to see in TV. If the comparison does justice, it's like Get Out mixed with a little bit of Us. I laughed. I cried. I mmmhmm'd. It's an unapologetic show that gracefully covers race relations without being over-direct about it.

My only complaint is toward the end, in which the plot twists came at the cost of some logically unsound events. Had these latter story elements been as pristine as the surprises, I might've leaned toward a 10. The acting of the main characters are perfect; some of the lesser seen characters felt a little kiddish. I also felt like the backstory we got of (you know who) felt unfinished and rushed. You can't possibly do a backstory justice in just one episode and a few cheesy flashbacks.

Overall amazing. Will definitely watch it again once I start to forget the plot a little. Truly worth (most) every minute.

Great show very real
courtneymrbod18 September 2023
Great show! I hope to see more! I was entertained each and every episode. Music used was great especially after the last episode. I want more! The actors were great it really reminded me of those that "make it" and those that decided to "keep it real" it shows a balance of what one would do in real life. The whit characters maybe really "friends" while the ones that look like you are really not. I have never been one to follow those that say " we gotta look out for each other" never really trusted it. This show proves my point. Cannot trust anyone even if they look like you. Everyone has a price. No one is above the money making limit.

A disappointing snooze fest
missraze21 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was going to be TOTALLY different. And not in a good way, since plot twists and curveballs and new directions in movies and books and series is usually a good thing.

I gave this 1 star at first. In episode 8, I gave it 10. I am giving it 10 stars for the things that I wrote in this review, which this series caused me to want to write, and I think I am discussing important things, even if people have a problemo with it. So I guess...that means this is a great series. It's intellectually stimulating, at least for me, a critical thinker. However, it is a 1 star viewing experience which I'll discuss soon. Perhaps the book is much better. I don't think people realize that this is based on a book, by a black woman, so all the reviews who are bitter about how the series turned out (I'm not bitter, at ALL, just confused and a little bored), and who are blaming hollywood for this, need to get their facts straight (even though hollywood is culpable and lacking in many ways). Don't deflect and blame others for this, because it just might be true, even if hyperbolic and satirical or just a bit silly or even as I think, boring. However, in two separate episodes, the main villains Diana and Hazel wore pink and green, colors of a big black sorority, probably the biggest sorority since so many black celebs and politicians are from it. And there are firsthand accounts of that organization's initiations and the general nature of their "sisterhood" being spiritually dark, so...maybe this series is by someone or someone(s) who denounced their membership, or who got rejected while trying to join, or who refused to join in the first place whether invited or not, or just a rival org, or...taking out the cultist mumbo jumbo which may or may not be true, just focus on something more concrete or valid, which is that black women DO and HAVE put all their worth in their hair, and have made other black women do it too in society, hollywood, and allegedly in that sorority, by alienation or bullying.

Don't lie.

So it's no surprise that straight hair through a strange product is Hazel's part of group initiation. It's not hollywood at all. It's everyday life! Nella was "too real" for the big company she works for and Kendra was just a smart insecure chick from the hood so she didn't make it, but Hazel...Hazel made it because she was a "sellout" and the right hand to a cult leader. A cult in reality doesn't have to be a syndicated organization with a labeling name. It could just be a common mindset. I mean, this isn't too far off from reality, peeps! So those are the tolerable things about the series. It seems the biggest critics of "black" series and movies, are black people, mostly due to this twisted insecurity about what they wrongfully presume white people negatively think, when in reality, white people are thinking the opposite way. Let's start with the fact that the large publishing company where Nella works, hired her, with her afro and all, and her white boyfriend is, well, her boyfriend. But who came in and revealed how they initiate black women into bigger success?

Other black women.

That's what happens when you care too much about what people think, you get it twisted. Trust me, white people are simply not disliking things for the reasons you may think. "Why can black women only be successful if they're doing witchcraft in movies?" someone wrote. Wah wah wah. Maybe because, in real life, they probably ARE doing spiritually twisted things such as changing who they are to fit in, whether it be with white people...or other black people. Scorning this series for revealing that albeit poorly and accusing it of being racist for revealing this deep dark truth when it could actually be genuine tough love or simply just not that deep, is just twisted. That being said.

Firstly, the white boyfriend surprised me when he turned out to be a boyfriend. The way he sat down, I thought he was the gay bestie, even after he pecked the main character Nella on the lips. No chemistry, at all. Were they puking or even fighting between takes? Seems like it. And why did the show have him act like the Ken Doll from the Barbie movie, a ditzy blond simp? Minus a star for his acting/character sketch.

Next, I thought based on the Kendra-Diana back story, that Hazel was Kendra reincarnated coming for revenge. It would've been stupid, but it would've been simple and entertaining in a basic way, and funny in a headshaking sort of way. And that would've been fine. But it turns out that it's a cult run by the only other black women in Nella's workplace, with the first step being to change their natural hair into a relaxer. It was unexpected but disappointing that it had a pseudo deep message presented in a boring and dull package. When the slapstick Kendra-possessed-Hazel-to-vindicate-herself-at-the-company-then-take-it-down thing would've been fine, in my opinion. That being said, that wig the girl who was following Nella to reveal this TO Nella, (who ended up getting a perm forced by Hazel and thus subsequently converted to a sellout), it needed to go. Sad to say, it was ridiculous, which is upsetting since they could've made the natural hair wig look better even if it was going to get permed, but anyway. Minus a couple stars for being boring with a weird plot twist that it struggled to get to.

Next issue was the ANNOYING 80s-esque vibe. It's just so bad, I don't UNDERSTAND why so many movies and series are copying off of the 70s and 80s. It's literally as if a Gen X'er or an older millennial had this idea rolling around since before I was born, and finally was able to bring it to life and all they know are blazers and dresses with shoulder pads and NYC yuppies and anachronistic funk music and trippy, echoey synths and the NYC subway train with orange seats (when many NYC trains, don't have orange seats; those are old trains!). Just make it stop. This literally looked like if Coming To America were a horror movie. It's just annoying. So minus a couple stars for the Starz network 80s drug kingpin memoir series color quality, cinematic style and wardrobe, and at times, soundtrack. One other thing that's very 80s: the whole...hair thing. Like that series Bad Hair, a recent one. Also 80s vibe, side note. The only reason I'm not watching it. Didn't know this series would be the same, just duller, but anyway. The hair thing is, no longer. Black women wear their natural hair now. They don't wear wigs and weaves like they used to, nor for the same reason. At first, those things were to literally convince people that it's real hair. Now, no one asks if the wig or weave is real. Wigs and weaves are no longer big open secrets. Even light skinned mixed women openly wear wigs! They call it "glam." Not only are they wigs now, they're blue and orange and green. Black women are having fun with hair today. I haven't had anyone ask me if my hair is real in SO long (maybe 5 years but I don't wear wigs or weaves but I do wear crochet or clip in extensions sometimes, using Kanekalon hair a lot for styles which is believable by sight). Also, the "big chop" is very popular, you'll go viral for it and get paid loads to talk about it through hair product sponsorships or just loads of views and adsense pay. Black women are more "pressed" (get it, pressed?) about the length, not texture. The texture thing and perm thing is soooo 80s, goodbye! (Or for people born in the 80s who still were struggling with their hair texture in the 2000s). Soooo the obvious 40+ year old mind or minds behind this, need to relax, excuse the pun. This series said it's the year 2023 but I think everyone knows it but them! If you're black and still caring about hair, you must live under a rock, or you're insecure about something else, rather than your hair. You might not like your face, or something, and you think it's your hair. No, it's your face boo. Because if you loved your FACE etc, your hair would be a non topic when it comes to leaving the house. So anyway. Minus a couple stars for the antiquated style and theme about hair.

The next issue I have is that, connected to what I thought the plot twist was, I thought Hazel was Kendra, and had supernaturally convinced the CEO of the company to act on her behalf, and that his speech and his behavior was him under a spell. But no, it was him in true form just plain old weird as a character, and bad acting.

Another wee pet peeve I had was that earlier in the season, I literally said out loud "If Nella says 'diversity' ONE more time...!"

The final issue I have is that Hazel and other black women apparently, think life will be easier if they just perm their hair and "play the game." Welp. Many black women did that, black guys too, in their own way. But look at celebs. Just look at em. Dead tragically, found alone and disgraced. Oh please and just stop it lol.

You can have a happy life with natural hair and brown skin! And not working in a big city workplace, or going to a "top" college, or joining some "sisterhood."

Well anywho. While I see the value in the story's message, I hated sitting through every episode. Just so boring, horrible soundtrack, darkly colored, badly styled, bad wardrobe, bad hairstylist, bad acting, bad plot twist (for a viewer but good for a conspiracy theorist), bad pace (10 episodes is quite long for a single season or miniseries, particularly one that isn't episodic but that had cliffhangers because it just means they dragged it out). Actually, the lighting was bad too I mean, if it were brightly lit it and sunny then it would've been better; it would've compensated for a dull cast and a dull vibe but also it would've been ironic and therefore quirky and eccentric, rather than cloudy days and a lot of silhouette and lowered saturation to convince us that this is a deep thriller. Generally speaking, I think I deserve an award for watching the entire thing.

I really enjoyed the show. Iykyk, literally is each and every episode. I can relate to a lot of the aspects and personalities within the show. Please watch. I binged watch. Loved the transparency. Excited to see where things will head on the next season. Glad to see the novel turned into a series. At times hilarious. Stayed up watching each episode, trying not to wake my family up. Yes it is that good. Watch, Enjoy, Laugh. No matter your background , I believe we all can find something to laugh and relate to with this one. Corporate America can be hilarious as a whole with their policies and practices.

How Great America gets these days...
HLEYE21 September 2023
The US is getting way ahead of the rest of the world, and not just in this series, but also in highly acclaimed series like Damages or Perpeption, in portraying humans as copies of copies. Stereotypical, superficial, hypocritical, shallow, bland, stale etc.

This show starts off the same way. The acting is oke (for US standards that is - which means you can sometimes believe they not acting, while with real actors u never think they are acting, right?). The shallowness is mind numbing, equality shouldn't be about everybody getting equally shallow I would hope. Feminisme of antiracism should be out freeing people to strat to really do what they want to do, instead of coping what the white guys and bourgeois white women think what it means to be successful. It's all so utterly boring... However the show is funny sometimes, shows there is no black community or sisterhood (as anyone with a brain could already know), the rest is well... predictable... It's not bad, so 5 stars for the effort... gonna watch something good now, something European... with real people in it in stead of these caricatures...

OMG! OMG! OMG! Definitely glad I found this, and I am most definitely here for it!!!! I see where more show are coming out of this nature , and what they are meant to depict, and I was trying to see where the storyline was going and what the ultimate message is meant to depict, and that most definitely happened. I need season 2 as soon as possible!! You definitely can make this an ongoing show and add on to this. Keep it going with different storylines after season two. For example how they set up AHS, Power, Why Women Kill, and so forth. It will definitely keep viewers and ratings. Again too excited that I found this show.

Brilliant, dark, clever and addictive
dalyhousehold-299-38899828 September 2023
This came up as a recommendation. I just couldn't stop watching episode after episode. It is absolutely brilliant and addictive to watch. I binge watched the whole season.

There were some actors that I've never seen before and they are brilliant in this. It's very cleverly written and acted.

If you like something different, slightly dark but still easy to follow and enjoy, then this is one you should make yourself comfortable for and get watching.

No spoilers, but you will just thoroughly enjoy all the little twists and turns in the storyline. So good and I hope there will be another season soon.

Hmmmm
nataflo25 September 2023
This series had my mind running. I could relate to all the characters. I have wanted to so badly to accomplish great things in a predominantly white corporate America. I have overworked, set extremely high expectations, been the go to person, trained others, only to be passed over and left to wonder why. I wanted to be in leadership so I could take others like me with me. I have looked at another like me and thought why are they kissing ass, are they trying to make me look bad. I have been the positive person while others like me give me side add as saying look at the Aunt Sarah (if I was a man it would've been Uncle Tom). I have manipulated others to get what I want. And then I have wanted to just get out, be free, and do my own thing happily. So this show is one I cannot stop watching and I hope there are so many more episodes to come. I keep going back and forth, would I have .......?

Really good!
and_shove_it_up_your_butt13 January 2024
Bummed to see how the season just ends the way that it does. Please, Hulu, renew for another season. Don't leave us hanging. The Other Black Girl is a binge-watch-able show that makes you think. Very cleverly done. The themes are in your face but subtle and below the surface at the same time. I know that doesn't make much sense but it's the only way to describe what I'm thinking.

The one thing that bothers me though is that I don't believe Eric McCormick is the right fit for Wagner. He's a great actor and he's still very handsome but his energy isn't right for this role. Also, I know that she is a side character but Malaika elevates the series. She's enjoyable to watch.

Love it! Must watch
meandyou_j_s10 March 2024
I was sceptial at first but after watching the first epsiode i couldnt stop watching! Love the story line and didnt expected a lot things. The only thing what i though was sad was length of the episodes should be longer 😫. Very good actors ! Some new actors that i never saw before and the act really Good! Also some old actors that i saw in movies and shows before. Im very happy to see them in action again and being very mysterious. The storytelling is evidently a strong point, weaving a narrative filled with unexpected twists and turns that keep you hooked. The Other Black Girl" a must-watch for anyone looking for depth, mystery, and exceptional performances.
