As another year of horror ends, we reflect on the best this genre had to offer. Usually, that means focusing on those movies that drew the most attention. However, there are also those movies that slipped under everyone’s radars for whatever reason, ultimately causing them to be overlooked. So the objective here is to bring more attention to these releases as horror fans play catch-up.
Like last year, 2023 was a strong year for horror. And these ten hidden gems might have escaped notice at the time, but it’s never too late to discover them now.

Unsettling workplace dynamics are a troubling issue that continues to envelop women in a suffocating atmosphere of fear and injustice. While women strive to break through barriers in their careers, they are often overwhelmed by the challenges they encounter. In the midst of this disconcerting reality, certain movies act as a reflection of society’s darkest aspects. Pollen, a 2023 independent horror film directed by D.W. Medoff, not only provides scary moments but also addresses the unsettling issue of workplace harassment against women. Through the manifestation of supernatural elements, such as a demonic tree, the film symbolically reveals the deeply rooted struggle women face under the glass ceiling.

Filmmakers in the horror genre often place socio-political commentary in their movies, and usually, it works way better that way as opposed to having addressed it directly in a didactic drama. The new movie Pollen by writer-director D.W. Medoff is an interesting indie horror film that tries to tackle sensitive issues such as sexual assault, mental health, toxic work culture, and the overall alienation of young individuals using the already established intriguing tropes of the mystery and horror genres.
Borrowing from Polanski’s 1965 classic Repulsion but giving it a botanical twist, Pollen keeps the viewers engaged throughout its one-and-a-half-hour runtime. Hera, a young adult who lives alone in a cabin-like house near the woods and works in a competitive finance company, gets sexually assaulted by the finance lead, and her life from then on becomes a series of traumatic events, worsened by her fixation on a plant that was gifted to her by her abuser.
