- Martha Costello has taken silk and much change is in the air at Shoe Lane chambers. She and Clive Reader, whose application to become a Q.C. was unsuccessful, must find a way to get along. The Chamber's chief clerk, Billy Lamb, spins his magic as always to keep the peace. Martha's first case, with Reader as her junior, is to represent Brendan Kay, an enforcer for the Farr crime family. Kay is something of a simpleton and Martha realizes that his solicitor, Micky Joy, is more interested in the Farr family's interests that in what might happen to Kay.
