5 years ago, if you had pitched a documentary about Edm DJs and Producers you would have likely been called daft and then subsequently laughed out of whatever pitch session you were in.
However since 2007, there has been a shift in the record industry that has brought electronic music into the spotlight perhaps more than ever before, because of this, a movie such as Re:Generation Project has been not just allowed to exist, but to flourish as well.
The concept behind the film is simple, grab a handful of some of the hottest DJs and Producers in the scene today, pair them with their polar opposites, and ask them to collaborate on some tracks. For some producers such as Mark Ronson or The Crystal Method, this is just a matter of flexing some already well honed muscles, others however find that not everyone is so ready to validate their presence in the industry.

Pretty Lights, aka Derek Smith, has his hands full with country legend Dr. Ralph Stanley in “Re:Generation.” The documentary, which plays in theaters for one day only, Feb. 23, before finding its TV home, pairs current DJs, such as Mark Ronson, Skrillex and Smith with artists in different genres. They then create an entirely new recording from the ground up. Smith comes the farthest in the film musically: when he first finds out that he will be working in the country genre, he can’t disguise his contempt for the music, even though he barely knows anything about it. By the end,...

Call John Densmore a skeptic. Newly-minted Grammy winner Skrillex had his work cut out for him when he paired with the Doors, including drummer Densmore, to create a new song based on “Riders on the Storm” in “Re:Generation,” a new documentary that links well-known DJs, such as the Crystal Method, DJ Premier and Mark Ronson, with artists in other genres. The film, which plays in theaters Feb. 23 before finding a TV and then DVD home, chronicles the musical journey that all the musicians travel when they step out of their comfort zones. [More after the jump...] Though Skrillex wasn’t born...

“Searching for a satellite signal.” That’s how Erykah Badu describes her writing process as she was penning lyrics for “Gumbo,” the tune written by Mark Ronson, Meters’ drummer extraordinaire Ziggy Modeliste and others for “Re:Generation.” The film, which opens Feb. 16 in a limited run, takes five top DJ/producers—Ronson, DJ Premier, newly-minted Grammy winner Skrillex, Pretty Lights and The Crystal Method— and pairs them with artists from another genre to create something new. In the case of Ronson, he paired with jazz artists to come up with a new track. Skrillex partnered with The Doors. The tracks were created within days...

If Sunday's Grammy's performances left you hungry for more, then here's "Re:Generation Music Project," a new documentary from Amir Bar-Lev ("The Tillman Story"), produced in association with the Grammys, that follows five electronic DJs/producers as they work outside of their comfort zones to create tracks in genres foreign to them. Skrillex works with members of The Doors to pen a rock track; The Crystal Method go R&B with Martha Reeves of The Vandellas and The Funk Brothers; DJ Premier comes up with a classical piece; Pretty Lights is tasked with the country genre; and Mark Ronson comes up with a southern brew of New Orleans jazz with Erykah Badu and Mos Def. Indiewire caught up with Ronson -- a London-born self-proclaimed hip-hop head, best known for his work with Amy Winehouse, Adele and Lily Allen -- to discuss why he chose to take part in Re:Generation. The film...

Amir Bar-Lev's ("The Tillman Story") latest documentary, "Re:Generation," is a limited engagement you don't want to miss. His behind-the-scenes approach delves deep into the creative processes of five DJ-producers as they collaborate with dozens of artists and musicians renowned the world over to produce "new" electronic music from five different genres.
The project, which initially began as a music platform for the launch of a new sports car from Hyundai, evolved into something more culturally relevant when the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (aka the Grammys) cosigned and enlisted DJ Premier, The Crystal Method, Pretty Lights, Mark Ronson and Skrillex to reimagine a specific genre of music (not of their own choosing) to create somewhat original tracks.
"Re:Generation" is more about the means to an end than the end itself, since technology has heavily influenced how these DJs and producers operate. Bar-Lev's film vividly illustrates that the...

Petrified, nervous, insecure, scared … None of these are words fans of Erykah Badu would associate with the neo-soul songstress, whose captivating musical stylings seem unflappable and effortless.
But they're all various ways Badu describes her experience making "Re:Generation," a fascinating new Grammys-produced music doc that pits five producers (Mark Ronson, DJ Premier, Skrillex, Pretty Lights and The Crystal Method) with the task of dabbling in five extrinsic genres (jazz, classical, rock, country and soul, respectively).
Badu, along with Yasiin Bey (a.k.a. Mos Def), Trombone Shorty, Zigaboo and more, were recruited for Ronson's jazz squad, where they had just hours to conceive a track for a performance that night. The celebrated crooner gives us a candid take on her "Re:Generation" encounter, delayed acting career and more.
So how did you get involved in "Re:Generation"?
They asked me to do it. And I said "Hell yeah," because it's an honor to be amongst Mark Ronson,...

After Thursday night’s premiere of Hyundai and the Grammy’s Re:Generation Music Project documentary at Grauman’s, Grammy winner Mark Ronson deferred to the manic Corey Feldman-esque energy of 24-year-old producer Skrillex, on his left. “I’m yesterday’s news compared to this guy,” Ronson said. (At far left, Skrillex with The Crystal Method.) In addition to earning five nominations in Sunday’s ceremony, the documentary captured Skrillex as he produced The Doors’ first new song in thirty years. “They’re the very first band I ever heard, and it’s the scariest thing an artist could ever face,...

It’s odd that a film celebrating musical collaboration and stylistic conflation would premiere only four days before The Grammys, an awards show that honors musical artists by segregating them into generic categories --although perhaps not. Re:Generation, a documentary directed by Amir Bar-Lev, was produced in association with The Grammys, along with GreenLight Media & Marketing and Hyundai. The film traces several orchestrated collaborations as five DJs explore sonic ideas in unfamiliar genres, in some ways a reminder that crossover is important but in other ways simply that genres like jazz and classical still exist in today’s musical landscape. Coming off the fascination documentary My Kid Could Paint That, then following it up with the post-war documentary The Tillman Story, director Amir Bar-Lev is heading into very different territory with his look at the world of DJ’ing in Re:Generation Music Project.
The film, which will hit limited theaters next month, follows five major DJs (Skrillex, DJ Premier, The Crystal Method, Pretty Lights and Mark Ronson) as they interact with major musical acts like Nas, The Doors, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, LeAnn Rimes and Dr. Ralph Stanley in creating that perfect mix.
We have a trailer below via Apple, but official site also features many videos including performances, original tracks and behind-the-scene featurettes. I include some below, but check out the rest at the link above.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Nitro Circus The Movie 3D Trailer I honestly don't care that I've seen dumb stunts like this before. I'm vibrating from the anticipation to take it all in.
