London’s Queer East Film Festival will run a virtual program of four free-to-stream Asian documentaries from July 3-31, as cinema closures due to coronavirus force its regular programming online.
The festival typically seeks to bring rarely seen LGBTQ+ films from East and Southeast Asia to the U.K., but this year’s online iteration will be mostly available to viewers worldwide.
Its “Qe: Docs4Pride” virtual program features selections from the Philippines, China, Taiwan and Japan. They are: “Out Run,” which chronicles the campaign efforts of Ladlad, one of the world’s only LGBTQ+ political parties, in its attempt to get the Philippines’ first transgender woman elected to congress; “Shanghai Queer,” which documents LGBTQ+ activism in the Chinese metropolis from 2003 to 2018; “Taipeilove*,” a look at Taiwan’s move to legalize same-sex marriage; and “Of Love and Law,” recounting the story of an openly gay couple who run Japan’s first LGBTQ+ law firm.

Exclusive/Film Bazaar: Indian actor Abhay Deol has set up a banner to acquire critically-acclaimed Indian independent films and work with online platforms to give them a straight-to-digital worldwide release.
The new venture, Abhay Deol Presents, has already acquired three titles – Aditya Vikram Sengupta’s Venice 2014 title Labour Of Love; Payal Sethi’s award-winning short Leeches; and Brahmanand S. Siingh’s documentary Kaagaz Ki Kashti, about Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh, which received a standing ovation when it premiered at Mumbai Film Festival last month.
“As an actor I’ve always wanted to balance mainstream and non-mainstream work but realised there needed to be changes in the distribution system for independent films to happen,” said Deol whose acting credits include indie titles Shanghai and Dev D. “Now digital is here, independent filmmakers finally have a platform, so I decided to take the plunge and explore this space.”

After receiving a tremendous response for its trailer, with close to 1.7 million views, now there’s much demand for the song of Anu Menon’s ‘Waiting’! The song ‘Tu hai toh main hoon’, which plays in the background of the trailer, has caught everyone’s attention and the audience clearly wants more of it. Giving in to the demand, the makers are now contemplating changing the order of the song release from what they had planned initially.
Music composer Mikey McClearly is known to spin background score and songs high on youth appeal and this is no different. He has earlier worked on films including Margarita with a Straw, Shaitan, Shanghai, David, Bombay Velvet, Nautanki Saala, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, Shaandaar. His songs are upbeat, yet the soothing melody strikes a chord in the hearts of the music-lovers.

Soon after completing Traffic his first feature film in Hindi, Rajesh Pillai died a sudden and shocking death at age 41. Manoj Bajpayee still can't believe Pillai was gone so soon. "I am still in shock and disbelief. I just can't come to terms with the fact that he is gone so suddenly. Rajesh was such a passionate filmmaker. He gave priority to his cinema over everything else, including his health. Now that we are looking at the release of the film I miss him more than ever. God bless his soul." The Bengali superstar Prosenjit returns to Hindi films after his much applauded role in Dibakar Bannerjee's Shanghai. Says Prosenjit, "It was really sad to see Rajesh Pillai leave us so suddenly. “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” goes the Xmas song, but it also applies to sorting through the dreck and crap that came out of Bollywood in 2015. I watched many of these duds so that you don’t have to, and trust me they’re not as hilarious as I’m going to make them, because for every great Jodi like Srk-Kajol in Dilwale there’s Sunny Leone being paired with Ram Kapoor. Yet there were some awful gems like Msg and its sequel that came out in the same year – take that annual Fast and Furious franchise! Herewith is the worst and secretly hilarious of the year.
Worst Actor – Emraan Hashmi for Hamari Adhuri Kahani/Mr X
After doing so well in Shanghai, and Ghanchakkar, Emraan decided to play it safe with his performances in Hamari Adhuri Kahani (paired opposite Vidya Balan) and the atrocious Mr X.

Aarav Ruparel (Emraan Hashmi) is a business tycoon with over a 100 hotels under his management. Though hardly staying at one place for a long time, he does have a liking for white lilies around him. It’s because of this that he meets Vasudha (Vidya Balan) who works at one of his hotels. Vasudha is a single mom working to make ends meet and before you know Aarav starts falling for her. But she has a past; her past being her abusive husband Hari (Rajkumar Rao) who suddenly left her and disappeared one day. While Aarav tries to convince her...

Once titled 'hitman' Hashmi due to his superb success record, actor Emraan Hashmi has been searching for that elusive hit for almost three years now. To be precise, his last big hit was Raaz 3 which released in September 2012.
In fact since Raaz 3, Emraan Hashmi has had some very promising films like Shanghai, Ek Thi Daayan, Ghanchakkar, etc flopping at the ticket window. Even his Dharma Productions outing Ungli failed to cut much ice, and the case was similar with his home banner venture (Vishesh Films), Mr X which despite the much touted SFX tanked. In all the cases, the hit music which was always associated with Emraan Hashmi films (and which earned him our title, music's lucky mascot) was clearly missing.
To cut a long story short, all eyes and hopes now rest on the golden boy Mohit Suri (Emraan's friend and cousin) to rejuvenate Emraan Hashmi's career and...

Last time when Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechelin came together on screen on the same day, it was for Shanghai where they were paired opposite each other. Now this Friday they would be pitted opposite each other in two altogether distinct films – Mr. X and Margarita With A Straw. While former is pitched for the masses, latter is eyeing niche audience.
Let’s talk about Mr. X first. The film is one of the rare Emraan Hashmi films that is catering to universal audience. In fact it has been pretty much sold as a family affair. All of this means that the film would have to reach out to a newer set of audience, which could well turn out to be a game changer for the actor. Since the actor is in a reinvention phase, this is actually a step in the right direction. All of this means that though...

Dear Dibakar
You have set the trend for grim, hatke cinema that catches the viewer unawares. Your style of story-telling is entirely your own and this is what was seen even in a small segment in Bombay Talkies where four directors displayed their talent. Yours was a masterpiece. The way you exploited Nawazuddin Siqddiqui's talent was amazing, not to mention the wide camera angle that spoke the unspoken words.
Khosla Ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Love Sex Aur Dhoka and Shanghai were other films that had your unmistakable stamp of creativity. You scared the viewers as well as entertained them.
So what went wrong with Detective Byomkesh Bakshy? The film was good, but it was just that: Good. There was no Dibakar Banerjee stamp of authenticity over the film like it has been in the above-mentioned earlier films. What happened? Did you have to tweak the subject to suit the Yash Raj banner?...

While Dibakar Banerjee's films right from Khosla Ka Ghosla to Shanghai appealed critics and a section of audience, it didn't quite set the cash registers ringing in.
So, when we asked if he is betting commercially on his latest film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, Dibakar said, "There is no other way to do a film than to commercially bet on it because if the film fails commercially then you can't do anything. My past films were not supposed to be box-office hits because all those were challenging the wisdom and expectations of public."
"Khosla Ka Ghosla was a sleeper hit. Nobody knew that it would be so loved. Oye Lucky shocked everybody because everyone was expecting me to do Khosla part 2. LSD (Love Sex Aur Dhokha) was out-n-out controversial film. Shanghai was a film that really told you what India was like. These kinds of films are not exactly sure...

Dibakar Banerjee returns to the director's chair after the critically acclaimed Shanghai with a brand new adaptation of the works of Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay in Detective Byomkesh Bakshy.Byomkesh Bakshy is a legendary Indian literary character, a detective on par and very much influenced by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Like Holmes, Bakshy has also been adapted to the screen, both big and small, numerous times with at least nine feature adaptations by Bengali filmmakers like Satyajit Ray (Chiriyakhana) and Rituparno Ghosh (whose final film was Baskhy story Satyanweshi and starred fellow Bengali filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh as Bakshy), as well as TV serials and other appearances. With a wealth of stories, 32 written by Bandyapadhyay between 1932 and 1970, Bakshy is a gift that keeps on giving...

Disney will release the film on May 16, 2014.
Based on a true story, Disney’s Million Dollar Arm follows Jb Bernstein, a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by bigger, slicker competitors.
He and his partner Aash (Aasif Mandvi) will have to close their business down for good if Jb doesn’t come up with something fast. Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, Jb comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Why not go to there and find the next baseball pitching sensation? Setting off for Mumbai with nothing but a gifted but cantankerous scout (Alan Arkin) in tow, Jb stages a televised, nationwide competition called “Million Dollar Arm” where 40,000 hopefuls compete before two 18-year-old finalists, Rinku and Dinesh (Suraj Sharma,...

Kareena Kapoor will star opposite Emraan Hashmi in Ekta Kapoor’s next venture ‘Badtameez Dil’ and the diva refused to lock-lips with the serial kisser. When Kareena was asked to smooch Emraan, she straightway refused as she is not comfortable to do kissing scene. The past track of Emraan Hashmi shows if the actor has kissing scene in any movies, the movie boomed at the box-office than those films which has no lip-locking scenes. ‘Shanghai’, ‘Ek Thi Daayan’ and ‘Ghanchakkar’ failed at the box-office as it showed the actor in a simple role without smooching scene. Hence, the actor apparently asked the film producer Ekta Ka...

What's the common factor in Emraan Hashmi's last few films? Well, none of these boasted of trademark 'Emraan Hashmi' kind of songs. Whether it is Ghanchakkar, Ek Thi Daayan, Rush or Shanghai, each of these had the kind of music that was miles away from the kind that goes with Emraan's territory. All of that is going to change now with Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahi remake, work on which has already begun. For starters, the film would be an out and out musical and would boast of as m...

It was mentioned in this column last week that for Ghanchakkar to eventually come up trumps, a lot would depend on the weekday collections. Well, as it happened, the film didn’t quite cover much distance after a decent weekend and collected around 10 crores more. The film did stay stable but that was on the lower end that resulted in the first week billing of 32 crores.
Though these are decent collections for the film, much better was expected given the credentials involved. Still, if one compares these with some other films that Emraan Hashmi had done in the recent past which were not in his ‘zone’, case in point being Ek Thi Daayan and Shanghai, the film has fared better. However, one did look forward to more appreciation coming in for the film along with box office moolah, something that was not the case as it had to settle down with an ‘Average’ tag.

Last week’s prediction of Ghanchakkar came true on two counts. First and foremost, it opened much better in multiplexes when compared to single screens. Secondly, the average footfalls for this widely released film were in 40%-50% range. However, it was also predicted that the film would see some good rise in collections over the weekend. Well, as it happened, this didn’t quite turn out to be the case as the film managed to stay on just about stable and couldn’t really see much escalation. As a result, the weekend collections were around 22 crores which, if not excellent, are decent for sure.
In fact if one looks at the kind of average to above average reviews that the film managed to get at large, and had a similar response from audience as well, this Rajkumar Gupta directed film still managed to have its head above water for a major part of the weekend.

It's been a strange few years for Bollywood's kissing bandit, Emraan Hashmi. The actor became prominent in the last decade for his willingness to plant his lips on anything that moved on screen, an action still not entirely common in Hindi films. Some might say that he's helped push Hindi cinema into the 21st century with his progressive take on personal relationships. It hasn't helped, though, that the films in which he's plied his trade are mostly B- and C-grade schlock, at least until recently. Over the last couple of years, Hashmi has made a serious turn toward earning respect in films like The Dirty Picture and especially last year's Shanghai, in which he was absolutely fantastic. However, in the time since that film he's made...

I'm only half joking here. It would be quite a logistical feat if Bollywood had managed to adapt Danny Boyle's upcoming amnesia thriller before it even hits theaters, but the similarities between that film and Rajkumar Gupta's upcoming Ghanchakkar are impossible to deny. Both feature a career criminal who commits a crime, loses his memory, and is then tracked down by his former compatriots/employers to unveil the whereabouts of the loot. Of course, it's not as simple as all that, but it never is.Ghanchakkar is most interesting to me in that it reunites the stars of one of 2011's best Bollywood films, The Dirty Picture. Emraan Hashmi, currently on a career high following Tdp and his role in Dibakar Banerjee's Shanghai, reteams with Vidya Balan,...

Emraan Hashmi’s stature has certainly gone beyond his initial tag of being just a serial kisser. The actor, who has shown his acting and superstar chops in films like Shanghai and Jannat 2, is one of the most coveted talents in Bollywood now. However, when Emraan is in a film, kissing becomes an integral part of the script.
But for a change, the actor has let his co-star take charge. A source told us that in his latest film, Ek Thi Daayan, there is a scene where Huma Qureshi and Emraan are required to get intimate. Mumbai, March 13: If commercial films do well, studios put some of the profits into off-beat films too, says Dibakar Banerjee, the director of "Shanghai" and "Love Sex Aur Dhoka".
"It actually helps filmmakers like Anurag (Kashyap) and I when a commercial film makes Rs.100-200 crore.
