Pickpocket Kylie's life seems to be improving. A wallet she lifts from a man named Mike that has nothing in it except for a newspaper article on her criminal exploits. Mike has been watching Kylie and makes her a special business offer that's too good to pass up. Writer/director Jonathan Robbins keeps the tension and intrigue humming in this typically fine episode: The brisk pace never flags for a minute, the tone is suitably hard, gritty, and unsentimental, there's a nice line in spot-on cynical humor, and both the tough characters and the sordid environment they live in come across as totally plausible. Of course, Elitsa Bako's fiercely sparky and captivating portrayal of Kylie remains as impressive and captivating as ever; Bako has a steely presence that's impossible to either ignore or resist and plays the lead part with complete conviction. Jeff Sinasac delivers a sound and credible performance as Mike while Peter Hodgins is appropriately menacing as fearsome head gangster Marcel and Buzz Koffman makes a welcome reappearance as the ever-intimidating Hatchet Man. But it's the matter-of-fact depiction of the shrewd and resourceful Kylie that really gives this show a highly effective and distinctive edge; one can't help but get caught up in this scrappy gal's harsh world and wants to know what happens to her next. Gripping stuff.
