Featuring entire scenes to laugh over, and that's become a rarity! [+74%]
arungeorge1316 February 2023
Romancham is one of those movies that takes a little while (about 15-20 minutes) to get going, but once the Ouija board element kicks in, it goes ALL OUT entertaining. The cackles are aplenty and relentless, with everyone (yes, everyone!) in the cast getting their memorable LOL moments. While I see it being talked about a lot as a horror-comedy, I feel the right way to refer to it is comedy-horror; situational humour precedes all else in the film. The horror aspect gains some strength in the final act, but the setup is kept aside for a potential sequel. But, for what it's worth, Jithu Madhavan's debut effort is splendid in seamlessly blending an eerie atmosphere with humour that arises from spontaneous reactions, subtle change of expressions on the actors' faces, and witty one-liners.

It's a film that lends distinct attributes to each of the cast members. While you can pose questions like what five out of seven guys do for a living (which I'm frankly not sure, except for the guy whose business ventures are constantly flopping and another guy with a corporate job), and whether they do not step out of the house or that particular locality that often, these questions never pop up when you watch, owing to the kickass execution of consecutively hilarious scenes. The aesthetics in and around the house are pretty fascinating too: a bunch of unused toilet pots, an old movie poster, the porch with a swing, the terrace where they play volleyball, and the rat cemetery next to the house. I loved how Jithu uses these elements to keep us entertained for a little over two hours. Full marks to the cast (especially Arjun Ashokan, Sajin Gopu, and Afzal PH) and Sushin Shyam's pulsating score as well. Let's get the sequel rolling!

A nice little comedy but not much horror
Jithindurden15 February 2023
A nice comedy with a touch of horror. Felt like watching the first half of the first season of a series because there was a clear divide in the events and how it is made for it to be four episodes.

The ensemble cast did a great job but Arjun Ashokan scored even though he only appeared in the second half of the movie.

Sushin's background score often feels derivative to me, the same way I feel about Anirudh but both of them are extremely effective in the scenes in the movie that there won't be any complaints.

And how the movie ends was a bit of a disappointment but I kind of saw it coming because I already heard part 2 is coming, so it didn't become a huge disappointment. It felt like they didn't exactly have a clear plan on how to make this film whole and decided to tease a sequel that could be more of a horror and see how it would work out. It wasn't bad per se because of the way the film is structured and claimed to be based on a true story, but it kind of felt like taking an easy way out. Precisely because of that, I don't really agree with adding Horror in front of comedy when talking about the genre of this film.

A horror comedy movie at it's best
ebi-5147520 February 2023
You only get to see a movie like this once in 10 years so go to the nearest theater as soon as possible and enjoy this movie. A movie that made me laugh so much has never come out recently. It is a special feature of this movie that once we have seen this movie in the theater, we will never want to do it again It seems. The technical side of this movie is very good and the highlight is the background score which really engages the mood of the movie. And all the actors who acted in this movie have done their roles very well and now I like the movie a lot and I definitely recommend this movie to you.

It all happens inside a rented house in Bengaluru in 2007, with seven bachelors having the time of their lives despite struggling to stay afloat.

Hate Propanganda Alert!

I have started an account in IMDB just to post this review, because the one that says Sponsered reviews feels like a Sponsored One. Also, my lad learn the spelling of Sponsored. This movie keeps you entertained throughout. You would leave the theater laughing out loud, literally. Not in the must watch for theater experience category. But you should definitely watch this movie at the earliest before people start spoiling the fun. This is a fun, fast, 100% enjoyable movie with elements of horror. This movie doesn't force humor on you, but you will still keep on laughing throughout the movie. Excited for the second part.

Simple yet Super
firoz-aboobaker6 August 2023
Watched it with a notion that the reviews may be exaggerated or the movie might be overrated. So I was planning to watch it in 2-3 sittings when I get bored. But the movie kept me glued to the seat from the beginning till the end. The characters are well developed and relatable. Though there were lots of unanswered questions ( they may answer them in the sequel hopefully), the movie was highly suspenseful. The jokes were not the ones that will make your tummy hurts, but very subtle and enjoyable.

7 friends living in Bangalore, not in the crowded or posh areas but in a remote place in the city. Few of them have jobs and others are searching. Then on a bored day they play Ouija board and a ghost came, or did she?

Popcorn movie
cibinks7 February 2023
Recently mollywood was hunting for films like this.. and yesss.. Now it happened!!

I'd call this movie exactly as a "POPCORN MOVIE". The word "ENTERTAINMENT" too suits well! Siju sunny & Arjun ashokan stole the show. More than verbal comedies they made me laugh with expressions.

I saw some reviews in social media that this movie is upto Adi kappiyaare koottamani. But i think it's more than that. Mollywood never seen these kind of movies in last 3-4 years. Out and out humour. Everybody in the movie made it special. Waiting for the next part.

A perfect movie for relief Thanks to team Romancham.. Give us more like this.

Light hearted comedy movie with a pinch of horror.
akhil02716 February 2023
Malayali audience have been longing for a comedy movie for quite some time. Romancham is here to quench that thirst. Although it's a fun watch, I have to say that it's a bit over-hyped. Not that I didn't enjoy the movie, but the rush and reviews are as if it belongs to the range of classics like Punjabi House or Pulival Kalyanam. It does not.

Coming to the movie, there is no star cast in this. Only three of the actors are familiar. But almost everyone did a fine job. Especially Arjun Ashokan. It is probably his career best performance. Soubin is back to his form. I loved the guy who controls the Ouija Board.

Sushin Shyam did a major role behind the success of the movie. Kudos to Jithu Madhavan for providing us a breath of fresh air.

Best entertainer in recent times🔥
mithunmanmathan6 February 2023
I hadn't control my laughter🤣🤣. Trust me, if you have tension, depression or whats ever it is, you have forgot that and you only concentrate that movie🔥. Whole crew did a great job, especially actors, each and every one did a fantastic job. I didn't forgot Arjun Ashokan's that mannerism 🤣🤣. Sushin Shayam's bgm did a fantastic job. Overall I hadn't seen this type of comedy movies on recent times. If you are lived a hostel or something like that with your friends, you can easily relate this movie. This movie hasn't a single cringe scenes. This is the main positives of this movie and most of the comedies are situational comedies and that have work a lot.

A balanced dose of comedy, tension, and mysticism
ngandacinema8 April 2023
Thank you to the makers of Romancham for the extreme laughter in this film! The doses of comedy, tension, and mysticism were well-balanced!

DELICIOUS

-Sooo...We were hesitant to watch Romancham due to the Ouija board game at the center of the story, but it ended up being more of a thriller than horror which was appreciated.

Jithin Madhavan successfully built up the tension at adequate times and knew when to switch to humor. Each scene was intentionally executed to get us through the narration and new characters were added at the appropriate interval

-Give it up to Arjun Ashokan🤣🤣There's no way you can forget him! This is the first time Arjun was amusing in a role without forcing it.

-It was great to have a good sense of who the friends were: their laziness, boredom, unhygienic habits, and love for volleyball. No one overpowered anyone and even a superstar like Soubin Shahir gave others the spotlight 👏🏿

-Mystery was all around in Romancham: mystery in the wall poster, the increasing number of rats, Sinu's true identity, etc.

The main point of the story was clear: refrain from being excessively curious and meddling with mystical and obscure practices. What started out as simple fun turned out to be biting more than they could chew

BLAND

-Romancham was deflated by the screenplay's lack of progression. We were presented with friends playing Ouija and facing the consequences. But, what next? The storytelling took a common approach and finally, there wasn't much to hold on to after watching.

A classic horror fun ride Movie
skmenon199311 February 2023
Directed by Jithu Madhavan starring Soubin Shahir , Arjun Ashokan , Anantharaman Ajay , Sajin Gopu , Abin Bino , Siju Sunny.

7 people staying in a rented house at Bangalore. One fine day, Jibi alias Soubin Shahir insisted his friends to play a Ouija board to call the spirits. Initially it was going on a fun ride but later on things got changed which turns out the their sleepless nights & what happens next forms the rest part of the movie.

Positivity of the Movie.

1) Location was pleasant. The viewers who have lived with their friends/ colleagues during their bachelorhood would able to connect them fast. Film portraying of sharing the work, utilizing 1 room for many to sleep, an evening entertainment etc, these visualizations will definitely able to connect the above-mentioned viewers.

2) Deliverance of comic sequences at the right time gave the audience many laughable moments.

3) Everyone had given a notable performance. It was a single artist who lifted up so what is team work we could able to see in their performance.

4) The last 15-20 minutes of horror blended comedy worked well.

5) The ending sequence giving way to its sequel was convincible.

6) Sushin Shyam background music was captivating.

Negativity of the Movie.

1) Many dialogues were not clearly dubbed which it fails to understand the specific sequence thereby loosening the watchability factor.

Overall, a fun ride movie.

a funny ride and an amazing vibe.
gangeshgnair27 February 2023
"romancham" a funny ride and an amazing vibe.

The music and the background score by sushin shyam is amazing. The music sets an amazing vibe for the movie. All the actors give an amazing performance. The writing is so good that, there is almost seven main characters and all the characters and their mannerisms gets registered very quickly. The first half of the movie is very good, the jokes are hilarious. They land so nicely. Amazing work by the cinematographer, the movie mostly takes place in the interior of a house, but shots never gets repetitive or boring.

The issue i had in the movie is the second half, i feel they stretched arjun ashokans character a bit too much. There was not much stuff happening there. I really wished that they concluded arjun ashokans character a bit more nicely, maybe they would do that in second part, but the climax felt incomplete and a bit unsatisfying.

Boring, uninteresting
sriharsha-559719 April 2023
Not at all worth the hype and hardly justifies the title.

Except for a few laughs here and there , there isn't much to write about. Though the expectations after seeing multiple positive reviews made me give it a try, it ended up as a disappointment.i was waiting for something interesting when you are watching a horror or thriller genre. The movie has hardly any edge of the seat moments. Some scenes do make you laugh though. By the time we are past second half we realise the only good thing yet to come is the movie completion. The performances where good but a slow narrative without the moments you expect from a horror or comedy flick leaves you wanting for more.

Horror comedy done right
nishniz13 February 2023
Malayalam cinema keeps on giving. 2023 has given a spate of hits one after the other, and adding to the list is Romancham. While the comedy horror genre has been more of a Tamil movie industry mainstay, this movie puts the Malayalam film industry in direct competition.

In addition to the tight script, the movies is peppered with amazing actors - the best of the lot being the first timers, who doesn't seem like making their debut. In particular, SIju Sunny steals the show in every frame he is present. Sushin Shyam once again reiterates why he is one of the best music composers out there, adding BGM and soundtrack to not only complement the movie, but also elevate the script to another level.

Jithu Madhavan, the film's writer and director has made a solid debut film, and will now be watched with abated breath with every new release.

Enjoyed it!!
TreeFiddy5327 November 2023
Indian horror movies have gotten sappy lately. Why does the pei/booth ALWAYS have to have a sad backstory and stick around to exact revenge? Why can't evil just be plain evil sometimes? Melodrama sells, I suppose...?

Enter Mollywood to break this stereotype (with the likes of Romancham, a horror comedy, but not the kind of comedy you'd expect....and...not the horror you'd expect?....I can't say much more about the plot without spoilers but this was.....refreshing. When was the last time you found a horror movie experience to be refreshing; see what I mean?

Apparently made for 1.75 Crores, it's grossed 70 C already & is currently the highest grossing Malayalam film of 2023 and the 10th highest by an Indian film in 2023.

The music is phenomenal. There's an EDM/Trance song, that might very well be a club banger. The plot - simple, and apparently based on a true story. Great acting and no over the top drama/action, pretty much no nonsense.

Surely check this one out!

Struck a simple but necessary balance
SoumikBanerjee199610 April 2023
Horror comedies are a difficult subject to tackle. They are meant to intimidate as well as make the audience chuckle, which again is easier said than done. More often than not, the concoction becomes distorted, and the storytelling becomes either heavier on the humour end or heavier on the horror side, but with the newest 'Malayalam venture "Romancham,"; everything is precisely how it ought to be, as the movie does seem to find the much desired equilibrium that tends to make the most of both side of the coin.

While the understated, laid-back humour will keep you entertained, the eerie, fright-inducing sequences pay their dividends as well. Although do bear in mind that neither the humour nor the horror attains their full potential, but the plot is undeniably fun to watch, you will have a pretty good time!

Warning: Spoilers
Can you make a horror movie funny enough than this. This is what you will feel after watching it. The heart of the movie is the screenplay. The characters doesn't seem unwanted anywhere every one has meaning of being there. Please watch it with friends it generates more fun. The songs 🙂 added more beauty to the already beautiful movie. Movie lover can definitely get a satisfaction of watching a good movie and it is for sure. Title track won't go away from your head. Waiting how they will take up the part 2 from where they stopped the film. The comedy has been perfectly planned and executed which makes the movie more awesome and the jump scares are absolutely fun.

Very interesting and to an extend funny horror comedy thriller
mibinmammen-270747 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Watched Romancham twice and I felt that the movie is an interesting comedy horror thriller. The movie tries to put in elements of comedy which works out to an extend with most of them being situational in nature especially in the intro scenes and some scenes after the ouija board try. The horror aspect in the movie was lacking a bit for me as I didnt feel scared enough even with the whole ouija board playing and the consequences. This could have been enhanced with use of more brazen horror scenes. The story is not a new one and it reminiscent of the 2007 during the height of the ouija frenzy in India and kerala which adds flavour to the movie.

Overall an interesting horror comedy thriller a less tried genre in India.

Wow Horror and Comedy cocktail at its best
salvinkm17 February 2023
Absolutely loved this movie. It might be coz it related alot to my years back but we laughed out guts out. Didn't imagine a horror movie could get so good with comedy. The background score and songs was amazing that it rang in the ears for hours after the movie... The plot is easy and the storyline wasn't boring or leggy.. a good number of humour comedy dialogues... unknown actors apart from a few but the showed great talent... their expressions and the messages that were conveyed was too good.. can't find too many faults as they all did a great job.. Overall a great malayalam variety movie unseen and not like a typical predictable movie. Worth the watch in the theatres.

A fun watch with a jumbled screenplay, but the relevance to reality makes it worth watching
SAMTHEBESTEST17 April 2023
Romancham (2023) : Brief Review -

A fun watch with a jumbled screenplay, but the relevance to reality makes it worth watching. The horror genre always needs something new because the same old jump scares and obscene faces are not gonna frighten the audience anymore. The addition of comedy makes this genre special since the combination becomes unique as both of them are contradictory to each other. Hollywood generated the formula in the early talkie era, while Indian cinema is somewhat closer to half of that in recent times. Bollywood got lucky with Stree (2018), and now Malayalam cinema has tried something similar with Romancham. Stree is far superior to Romancham in every aspect, but one cannot overlook the biggest strength of Romancham: being a film based on true events. Stree was fictional, and hence, lost in this category of the battle. The same Malayalam industry gave us pathbreaking Manichitrathazhu (1993), but if I have to go into details, that's more in the psychological thriller genre than horror. Romancham is a fun watch for sure, and the first half ensures that you are interested in the story. It's the same old game you have seen in many horror movies and serials, but there's a kick to it. The humour and comedy are both very genuine and flow organically with utter simplicity. However, the film suffers in the second half as the comedy is reduced to null, with Sinu's boring segments testing your patience. The climax has an answer to it, but still, one can't just forget the boredom that appears before that. Who knows? Part 2 may be better. We'll see. For now, it's a good, entertaining watch, with some flaws here and there covered by honest performances of the entire cast, nice cinematography, and convincing direction. On a personal note, I'd request you, please don't overhype it because then we won't see things getting better in the future.

RATING - 6/10*

A silly film that hardly makes any progress
chettai-7724121 February 2023
Honestly this movie hardly progresses. Restricted to a claustrophobic room with the characters engaged in a neurotic Ouija game. Utterly frustrating and honestly a waste of money. The characters are engaged in this game throughout the film though finally the plot moves to some silly supernatural element . The dialogues lack clarity and is liberally spiced with crude humor .The actors have done a reasonably commendable job. Finally it is the story line that hardly captivates and occasionally it tends to be boring too. The sound effects are screechy and disturbing. The ambience is totally revolting and repulsive and radiates only negativity. Please avoid this film.

An engaging funny and light-hearted movie
alphadude0074 March 2023
Its been a while after Jaaneman that I had the pleasure of watching such an engaging, yet funny and light hearted malayalam movie. The mix of horror elements interfused between the story works like a treat. All the actors were top notch. Special mention to Soubin and Arjun Ashokan who were phenomenal and created a ruckus in the theater in a few scenes. The rest of the cast also worked out really well. What works for Romancham is the simple narrative limited to the characters comfort zone and space. There is no attempt to provide logical explanations or backstories which makes the film tight. Really recommend this movie and hope they make the sequel interesting and engaging as the first part. Kudos to the makers!

josephsajin12 February 2023
One of the best comedy horror flicks of this year. The screenplay and cast have totally got me to fall in love with this movie. From the beginning to end the story and characters takes us on a comdey packed journey without loosing an inch of thrill. Every single scene is executed with originality which makes us don't wana take our eyes of the screen. The background scores and songs are spot on making every audience member feel they got their money's worth. The content enacting and execution really makes the audience get a taste of that adrenaline rush paving the way for the unexpected yet savoury climax which makes us wait for the next one.
