Some of the most fascinating imagery I've seen in years
TheVictoriousV21 May 2022
Love, Death & Robots is one of those rare shows where I wind up raising my score for each new season and, true to the show's MO of giving small creators the floor to push the boundaries of CG (It's more of a variety show than a strict TV series), the latest one contains some of the most genuinely fascinating sequences I've seen in years. While I have a soft spot for the very small zombies, the Scottish man with the peculiar rat problem, and certainly the artful, Valerian et Laureline-esque voyage across the seemingly-sentient dunes of Io, none of the new shorts moved/disturbed/haunted me quite like Alberto Mielgo's Jibaro. Mixing stylization with realism, it's one of the most transporting (yet timely) retellings of folklore I've seen in years and certainly the most memorable -- it's one of those pieces of visual media where I clearly and distinctly still remember sounds and images from it; the shrieks of the golden siren, the helpless knights in their enchanted dance, et cetera.

As someone whose childhood revolved around animated shorts an inordinate amount (what with his dad being a VFX programmer who always downloaded the latest tech demos after a business trip to SIGGRAPH), I'm just really happy that this even exists. And if I must regard it as "a TV show", 'tis fast becoming my favorite one on Netflix.

Beautiful.... Beautiful animation
ladyliliroche20 May 2022
Watching it for the animation and the cinematography just by itself is enough, but the story is also intriguing.

Dark and gory, spectacular dancing. A good episode to end season 3.

a work of art
gianmarcoronconi24 May 2022
This episode is literally a work of art to be watched in silence that leaves you speechless, the scenic rendering of everything is beautiful and in its strange seriousness you can also glimpse sudden parts that tear a smile, truly a work of art.

Gave me shivers and goosebumps. Warning: Spoilers
Simply put, this episode dropped my jaw to the floor. It is so incredibly beautiful. I watched it twice last night, from beginning to end. The animation is about the best I've ever seen in any animation. The dance choreography of the female gave me shivers. I never thought an animation could do that to me. This type of animation is definitely a game changer. It is so realistic that I am still not totally convinced it is an animation. I'll have to watch it a third time and research it on Google because if this is truly an animation, technology has made a monumental leap.

Hats off to the animators, you really floored me.

EDIT: This is in fact an animation. I Googled some info on the making of this film from Alberto Mielgo, the animator. Yes, its fully CGI. Alberto Mielgo also provides the meaning behind the story. I highly recommend looking it up so you have some additional context to this episode and the message the animator wanted to convey to the viewer. I am still thinking of this film 20 hours later and how beautiful it is.

One of the strangest, most haunting and beautiful things I have ever seen. I won't be able to get this out of my head for a while. My jaw was open the whole time.

Masterpiece. This is what Art is.
Eli_Elvis21 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The females journey.

She's a goddess, beautiful and mysterious. Possessing a wealth of treasures for a worthy suitor. Armies will kill themselves to be with her, to possess her. The one who glimpses a part of her, which makes him afraid of what she has to offer, she chooses. Overcome with his own inability and fears, and unable to sacrifice a part of himself, seeing only the shallow beauty of wealth she might offer, he rapes her, stealing the riches he only perceives as valuable, discards her used body.

She is a force of nature. Deep and dangerous. The lake (her source of strength, herself), he takes her in a river (when she is away from her source of strength) where she ends and the Land(he) begins (the waterfall a torrent of forces between land and water). She returns to the source of her strength(the lake), awakening to what has been done to her. Outraged by the injustice, she destroys him, drowns him in the deepness of her suffering and pain caused by him, him along with the rest of the unworthy suitors who have dared come into her realm and trespass on her. Left a monster instead of a goddess, immortal in time, left to heal from the conflict, awaiting a day the worthy may come.

Haunting. This is what Art is. In 100 years, this simple story will be as relevant now as was a thousand years ago and will be a thousand years hence. While decaying marvel data will be forgotten like the refuse it is, this golden tribute to humanity will still be a treasure to behold and glimpse at. Like the goddess Jibaro herself, only suitable for the worthy.

A very artsy, but STUNNINGLY beautiful animation.
glendonstreetman21 May 2022
I am confident in saying that this, as of May 20, 2022, is the single most realistic animated short film ever made. Period. It is simply stunning how real it looks. Thinking about the amount of work this must have taken makes my head hurt. The water, reflections, foliage, physics, EVERYTHING, looks real. A bunch of people won't appreciate the achievement this is because its... different. Its strange and beautiful and its a monument to how far technology has come. There is a lot that can make you think, "Oh, this is fake," without you even realizing it. You'll see a weird texture or something won't fall the right way or light won't be reflected correctly, and that is all it takes to make you realize what you are seeing is computer generated, so in order for you to perceive something as real, EVERYTHING has to work, there can be no mistakes. This is as close to perfect (it is not perfect, but WOW is it close) in this regard as we've gotten so far. This is as close as we've ever come to bridging the uncanny valley...

I wonder how long it took to render :)

Toeing the line between artistic weirdness and silliness
saphira-2845431 May 2023
There's a lot to like about this episode and it's obviously a neatly crafted experience. However I wasn't as fascinated by it as other people. The cuts and noises, while probably necessary to hide how silly what was happening could look like, were pretty annoying. I did not care for any of the characters and I didn't need to see that much of the violence to get the idea, so the runtime felt a bit too long to me because of it.

Overall it's a very basic story, elevated by some details and dragged down by others. What this episode really wants (and accomplishes) to be is a weird spectacle and that's perfectly fine, but some sequences felt too self-indulging and silly at times, even with the careful editing.

One of the Best LD&R shorts.
serenitybane21 June 2022
Words don't do this one justice. The music, the audio work, the animation, all distinct and unique when combined to create a very emotionally-investing episode. At first I was jarred by the animation style, and the choice of shots paired with how janky and unnerving the characters were with their appearances and movements. But looking beyond that, you forget that these are in fact animated creations. There's so much going on so quickly, but it's easy to catch on to the plot. Topping it off, there is an overlying theme that ends with a very heartbreaking climax.

You might think there is a good person in this story. You guessed it: the horses. Neither main character is good, and they are a horribly wonderful pair.

a little on the fence
cherold26 February 2023
Normally I divide these episodes into good or bad, but this I'd define more as huh? Even though I saw everything that happened, I don't really know what to make of it. Even though it was visually striking, the visuals didn't thrill me. Even though there were moments that were effectively horrific, it left me feeling not much of anything.

I think a lot of the problem is it doesn't really make that much sense. And that makes it hard to get involved with.

I will say that this made me curious. Most of the time if I don't like an episode I just say, well that's dumb or pointless. But if in the end of this one I was thinking what exactly did they have in mind?

So much hype over nothing.
jonnyhainsworth30 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I genuinely do not understand all the 10/10 reviews.

The story simply broken down is a deaf knight sees 10s of people lured to their deaths by a siren. The siren gets infatuated with the deaf knight. Deaf knight kills the siren and takes her jewellery. Then we are meant to feel upset by this. Knight get cured and siren comes back to life and lure's him to his death. We then see the thousands that have been killed by this siren as the knight sinks to the bottom of a lake.

Add in a lot of dancing and in a nutshell what you have is a story about a mass murdering monster in an asthetically pleasing frame, getting their comeuppance by a disabled knight. All for it to be under minded because this mass murderer had their jewellery stollen so ends up curing the knight to kill him like the thousands of others and no doubt the thousands more to come.

In a word, wow.

In two words, magnificent, fascinating.

The choreography, the faces, the siren, the cinematography are amazingly beautiful. Aguirre meets the Odyssey in a savage dance.

Jibaro is a true work of art. Huge respect.

This is - as many people wrote before - a masterpiece. Extremely good dancers, excellent animation, archetypical, timeless story. I hope this will have some impact of inspiration to other artist.

Jibaro deserves an immediate second viewing, and a third. It is a breathless dance of death! 5 Stars!
drawnyou21 May 2022
All of the various different shorts within the "Love Death + Robots" collection deserve a view on their own merit. Each is intelligent, brilliantly imagined and almost perfectly executed. With that said - Jibaro is simply the FINEST creation of the entire 3 season run. I was dumbfounded. It transcends words; terrible and transcendent, it is magic brought to life!

Confusing...Stunning...Shocking...Amazing
ozdogweb21 May 2022
Out of all the episodes, this affected more than the others. The visuals blew me away and I am on my 3rd watch. The episodes is longer than the others, but takes you on a roller coaster. It is one of those episodes where you slowly work out what is going on, but oh so worth enduring it. OMG...season 3 just keeps giving.

I haven't been this impressed for a long long long time
iam_noweak15 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Like any other 10star ratings here, I can't say anything else but masterful, magnificent, mesmerizing for this episode.

  • Visually, it is incredibly stunning. It was a delightful feast for the eyes, making you forget to blink even.

  • Directing: I don't know much about all of these new methods, but those zooming in and out of focus at the night scene has definitely captured a whole different atmosphere than the murderous quakes of the day time. Also, that choice of staring at the soldier's face on the riding horse while escaping? If that didn't make you feel panicky, I don't know what will. At this point you just have to admit everything was planned and it works. I'm so very glad it works.

  • Story: best thing about this show is that any interpretation is never too far from being right. My understanding is simple but of course after repeated watch and attention to details. It's a crazy, dark and beautiful story.

This episode alone will hands down stand tall for a couple more years to come. It is now becoming a benchmark for a certain genre of TV shows.

Great job creators! Really really well done!

Masterpiece of sound, image and performance
igoratsalad23 May 2022
The only episode of all three seasons I've given a 10/10 without any hesitation. It's a masterpiece from beginning to end. It closes the third season bringing back the hope I lost after a very weak season two and a weak season 3 episode 1.

Odd
mazz-8207524 May 2022
Quite honestly the weirdest thing I've ever watched. Amazing animation though. I feel like there is some deep meaning in it but I am too dumb to understand. But either way it's weird enough to spend 17 minutes just to watch the weirdest thing you'll ever see.

Visually captivating, a bit weak on the theme and message
FairlyAnonymous26 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Overall, this is a very visually striking film and you can tell a lot of effort went into making the look and the design. Also, even though the editing is a bit too snappy for my taste, as I know they had a lot of story that needed to be crammed into a short amount of time, I think it is great that more animations are experimenting with more cinematography techniques and styles rather than just aiming for generic "cinematic" techniques.

That being said, I feel like the theme is a bit weak/uneven. There's the very surface level of the story which is about a man who is obsessed with gold but is deaf and encounters a siren made of gold who kills all of his comrades but can't kill him due to him being deaf. She... er... sort of falls in love with him? Her chemistry for him is completely erotic and sexual in nature with no actual chemistry so it's a bit confusing as to whether or not she actually likes him because sirens are generally used in narratives as "seducers" who don't actually love their victims but pretend to.

Either way, she seduces him, he almost falls for it, but then knocks her out, steals her gold, and then runs off with the gold. Somehow his hearing comes back and the siren awakens and cries out in sorrow knowing her gold has been stolen. She then kills him for "betraying her trust" or something like that and she is now left all alone with a literal body count of hundreds and we are left with imagery wanting us to feel sympathy for her or something.

I can see the groundwork for a competent narrative here, the issue is that there's no reason for the protagonist to trust her after she has murdered hundreds of his people. To add to that, there's no reason why he should have to fall in love with her yet the film portrays it as some sort of "tragic betrayal of true love" even though all she does is seductive/erotic dancing, kill his friends, and cause him injuries over and over again. When he does "betray her" it is treated in the same sort "rape imagery" metaphor that Maleficent did back in 2014, but it doesn't work here because there was no betrayal of emotions.

I can't feel sorry for a relationship falling apart that never existed in the first place, and even less so about one that has killed hundreds of people. Again, I have a pretty good understanding of what the subtext is supposed to be about, but I don't think the subtext connects with the main text.

Why

It was creepy, disgusting, and it made me feel uncomfortable. Quite disorienting.

I can kind of understand why people like it, but besides the artistry of it and the beautiful animation, I feel appalled by what I saw.

Wow!
akshunhiro28 May 2022
Visually stunning. Incredible soundtrack. There aren't words to describe how beautiful and disturbing this short film was. A simple idea (deaf man + deadly siren) spun out into an epic masterpiece. This director's work (see also The Witness in season 1) is just transcendental. Even though I know it will haunt my dreams, I want to see more. Cleverly twisted concepts in his characteristic highly-reflective visual style coupled with sinuous movement that is just beguiling, like a cobra you know is going to kill you yet you can't look away. It's both visceral and synthetic at the same time, in the best way possible.

Truly Oscar-winning stuff
Alice_Robersen31 May 2022
One of the very few short films that makes one have the full invested emotional connection of a cinematic feature-length film. Some feelings I had while watching: haunting, alluring, captivating, romantic, and frightening. Deception, greed, intrigue, misunderstanding, incompatibility, loneliness, love, hate, and regret. The landscape and world created was captivating as well as the musical score and visuals. This is a short that one can really share with friends and family and watch over and over again. A master work indeed. Congratulations to the incredible team with the foresight and abilities to make this come true. Incredible!
