Stacchi's “The Monkey King” is a computer-animated and English language adaptation of the classic novel “Journey to the West” from the Ming Dynasty. It was elected as the closing film at the 22nd New York Asian Film Festival in July 2023 and later released worldwide on Netflix. Also credited as the executive producer, Hong Kong filmmaker and comedy superstar Stephen Chow who played the Monkey King in his two-part “A Chinese Odyssey” (1995) and directed “Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons” (2013) is certainly no stranger to the Monkey King film series.

For director Anthony Stacchi (“The Box Trolls”), re-energizing the 16th-century Chinese novel “Journey to the West” for Netflix’s animated feature “The Monkey King” meant turning the titular character into something very modern: an antihero. This was supported by executive producer Stephen Chow (“Kung Fu Hustle”), who previously directed a live-action version of “Journey to the West.”
“Stephen Chow has made a career of making heroes out of really unlikeable jerks,” Stacchi told IndieWire. “And you stick with ’em on their journey ’cause you know why they are the way they are, and you’re hoping for them to redeem themselves. So we did that here. He is a selfish, arrogant jerk from the beginning, and that way through the end. But you understand why he’s fighting for acceptance, you know where his anti-authoritarian attitude comes from.”

Back in the early ’90s, a New Jersey-based company called GoodTimes Entertainment carved out a place for itself in the home-video space churning out straight-to-video knockoffs of Disney animated features. While “The Lion King” was in theaters, there was GoodTimes’ “Leo the Lion: King of the Jungle” on retail shelves, packaged (for maximum mix-uppability) in Disney’s signature white clamshell case. From a copyright perspective, GoodTimes’ strategy was super-sketchy, but as far as parents were concerned, it was easy to get confused — and most kids probably didn’t know the difference.
That bait-and-switch phenomenon crossed my mind when I saw that Netflix was making “The Monkey King,” which — like GoodTimes’ “Aladdin” or “The Little Mermaid” — was certainly fair game, since the source material (the 16th-century Chinese classic “Journey to the West”) was squarely in the public domain. The cynical part of my brain instantly imagined that the streamer was churning...

The streaming service is capable of interesting works for children, with this one based on 16th century novel Journey to the West featuring an irritating protagonist
Despite recent budget cuts, Netflix’s in-house animation division continues to produce lively, interesting works that, if released theatrically, might be diverting some of the applause that gets automatically lavished on Disney and Pixar’s currently mediocre output. Not that this is anywhere as rich and strange as the streaming service’s last big title, the Oscar-winning Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. The latest in a 10,000-mile-long line of adaptations of Journey to the West, the 16th-century Chinese novel attributed to Wu Cheng’en, bounces along energetically, and has some exceptionally fun frills around the edges, such as a flouncy vocal performance from Bowen Yang as spiteful, effete baddie the Dragon King, who gets to sing the film’s best musical number.

The 16th century literary classic Journey to the West is the mother of all Chinese fantasy. The mythological saga has spawned countless adaptations in various media across Asia and beyond, from the cult late ‘70s Japanese TV series to Peking Opera, videogames, graphic novels and a stage spectacle with a score by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and design elements by Gorillaz illustrator Jamie Hewlett.
Prominent among the innumerable film versions is the 2013 blockbuster Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, directed by Stephen Chow. A similar livewire action-comedy energy infuses Netflix’s The Monkey King, a children’s animated feature based on the sprawling novel’s most popular strand, on which Chow serves as executive producer.

Disney+ has mined the world of superheroes quite well with their various series forays into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, there are other graphic novels and stories that fit within the Disney wheelhouse. It is a fortuitous coincidence that Everything Everywhere All At Once won big at the Academy Awards just as marketing began for American Born Chinese, boasting Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, amongst many other cast members. But it is no coincidence that American Born Chinese is a solid series for the streaming platform.

It’s hard to pin down the identity of “American Born Chinese,” the new live action adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s acclaimed graphic novel of the same name from creator Kelvin Yu. Is it a fantasy epic of warring ancient gods? A modern-day high school romp about a second generation Chinese American teenager trying desperately to fit in? A tender examination of multigenerational trauma and the scars that can unwittingly be passed on from parents to children?
The answer is all of the above and, as you may expect, it comes with mixed results. At its best, “American Born Chinese” is a delightful and refreshing exploration of diasporic identity, a thrilling martial arts fantasy and a heartwarming tale of family and friendship. However, the series’ disparate storytelling styles don’t often blend as seamlessly as we might like, making the whole show just a bit less effective than the sum of its parts.

A popular reading of superhero mania holds that it’s our era’s substitute for shared mythology; instead of Zeus shooting lightning bolts from Mount Olympus, we have Cyclops shooting beams from his eyeballs. So it’s fitting that the coming-of-age tale “American Born Chinese” streams on Disney+, the service that’s a one-stop shop for all things Marvel; Destin Daniel Cretton of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” the first Marvel film to star an Asian American hero, even directs the pilot. But “American Born Chinese” flips the script: rather than use superheroes for modern-day mythmaking, it infuses centuries-old myths into genres now dominated by superheroes.

When Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel American Born Chinese came out in 2006, it was a gamechanger. Yang has built his career on Asian-inclusive comics and American Born Chinese has been his most influential to date. It earned several comic book awards when it came out, and is still taught in schools today, complete with a study guide in Gale’s acclaimed Novels for Students series.
The slang “American born Chinese” is commonly reduced to the acronym “ABC” within Chinese communities. When used by certain Chinese, it can be slightly derogatory, implying that the ABC has lost the connection to Chinese culture. Yang’s graphic novel grapples with Amerasian issues in a coming-of-age story that has now been adapted into an eight-episode series for Disney+. While there are distinct references to the Asian American experience, the story embraces outsider themes that anyone can relate to.

Netflix’s animated output is certainly having a moment, between the Best Animated Feature win for Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio” and the acquisition of Animal Logic, the Australian animation studio that had previously been responsible for “Happy Feet,” “The Lego Movie” and “DC League of Super-Pets” (among many others). "American Born Chinese" is a great blend of a Disney Channel teen comedy and Marvel action, but with better visuals and more heart than most of the McU's recent output.
Based on the acclaimed graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, the show follows Jin Wang (Ben Wang), a Chinese American teen navigating a world of whiteness. Sure, he fits in fine with his soccer bros, but he also quietly stands aside as they mock the other kids of color, praying he isn't next, just as he brushes off any sign of discomfort as the school becomes obsessed with a TikTok trend mocking a sitcom with a racist Asian character.
Wang does a phenomenal job as Jin, following in the footsteps of the like of Hudson Yang or Frankie Muniz in giving a performance that looks perpetually stressed out and anxious, which only makes for some hilarious comedy.

During their first lunch together, Jin Wang (Ben Wang), the shy teen protagonist of Disney+’s American Born Chinese, notices something unusual about his new friend. Although Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu) is new not just to the school but the country, he seems to have no qualms about calling out the bullies mocking them, and no worries about making a scene doing so. “You don’t ever really doubt yourself,” Jin observes, with a mixture of awe and embarrassment.
But Wei-Chen — the son of a deity, and secretly new to human life — is nonplussed. “Why would I ever doubt myself?” he asks. That push-pull between insecurity and confidence will remain at the heart of American Born Chinese, through all manner of drama, action and fantasy, with wildly entertaining and occasionally touching results.
Creator Kelvin Yu treats Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel less as a template for his series than a springboard.

Sales agency Memento Intl. has unveiled the first clip and poster from Liu Jian’s Berlin competition title “Art College 1994,” which world premieres on Feb. 24.
The film is a portrait of youth set on the campus of the Chinese Southern Academy of Arts in the early 1990s. Caught between tradition and modernity, they now have to choose who they want to become.

You ever notice how HBO’s releases tend to do the heavy lifting in HBO Max’s content library? That makes plenty of sense given that HBO has a track record of producing hits well before the streaming era even began. Well, a similar concept is now playing out over on Hulu. Like many monthly releases before it, Hulu’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by a whole bunch of FX TV shows.
The initiative once known as “FX on Hulu” is no more but that’s not stopping the cable network-turned quality TV brand from churning out some intriguing titles for the streaming world this month. It all starts early on with season 2 of the delightful comedy Reservation Dogs on Aug. 3. That is followed up by the docuseries Children of the Underground on Aug. 13, Little Demon on Aug. 26, and The Patient of Aug. 30. The most interesting of the bunch,...

Acclaimed Canadian nature documentary “Geographies of Solitude” was Wednesday named the best film in the international competition section at South Korea’s Jeonju International Film Festival. The parallel Korean competition was won by “Jeong-Sun,” directed by Jeong Ji-hye.
The two previous editions of Jeonju were disrupted by Covid. But this year the festival, with 217 films from 52 countries, was held predominantly as an in-person event. Some 112 titles are additionally available for online viewing. In 2020, the 21st edition took place entirely online and with a delay of a month. The 2021 affair was an online-offline hybrid.
“Geographies,” which had its world premiere in Berlin in February, delves into the decades-long chronicling of flora and fauna on Sable Island by naturalist Zoe Lucas. She is joined by experimental filmmaker Jacquelyn Mills to observe the sand dunes, freshwater ponds, wild horses and washed-up plastic waste. Technically I’m cheating as this is a two part feature! “A Chinese Odyssey” for me defines everything I love about Hong Kong cinema. To describe it is to recall a wild fever dream as it just switches tone wildly from scene to scene. Yet it works in creating an emotional roller coaster that sucks you into its spell. When I watched it for the first time I had no idea what was going on but knew I was loving every second! One moment I was laughing at an absurd gag, the next bawling my eyes out. Stephen Chow’s regular screen persona fits the Monkey King’s evolvement to a tee. For me it remains the best adaptation of the “Journey to the West” stories even if at times bares no resemblance to them at all! Only in Hong Kong Cinema can you get such a combination of action,...

Chinese viewers may not get a chance to catch the Chloe Zhao-helmed Marvel movie “Eternals” in theaters due to China’s thorny relationship with the director, but the film’s meshing of Eastern and Western ideas has nonetheless appealed to some Chinese viewers.
Many reviewers on the Douban social media platform who have seen the film — presumably through illicit means — have commented on how excited they are to identify with what they feel are Chinese elements buried within the typical Marvel superhero showmanship. One wrote: “Chloe Zhao really is a Chinese person in her bones — at the end, she even pays tribute to the Five-Fingered Mountain and Ne Zha!” referring to a well-known place and character from Chinese mythology.

Its rights arm Parallax International Sales is at Tokyo this year looking for buyers for a selection of strong titles including “Journey to the West,” Asian Future Competition selection “The Coffin Painter,” director Zhang Lu’s Japan-set “Yanagawa,” stylish drama about the life of a Sichuan opera actor in the 80s “A New Old Play,” and “Annular Eclipse,” a dark sci-fi second feature from writer-director Zhang Chi.
“We hope we can build more connections with Asian buyers this year and expand our network to find buyers,” said Cao Liuying, co-founder and head of international sales.

Growing up in a traditional Chinese (and predominantly Mandarin speaking) household and under a father who loved the comedy and action genres, references to Stephen Chow, Donnie Yen, Jet Li, Jackie Chan always spring up from time to time. Having inherited my father’s love for comedy, my family would never miss out on a chance to catch a Chinese comedy flick whenever one aired on television. As much as Rowan Atkinson (who has played the characters of Mr. Bean and Johnny English) is recognised as an irreplaceable icon of British comedy, I firmly believe that Stephen Chow is the same for Hong Kong cinema.

Out of the numerous films that Stephen Chow has starred in, Jeffrey Lau’s “A Chinese Odyssey Part 1: Pandora’s Box” continues to be one of the most intriguing and timeless in both its plot and humour.

Deadly flooding did not divert this year’s Pingyao International Film Festival from running its full course, with the event drawing to a close Monday with an award ceremony honoring Egyptian director Omar El Zohairy, India’s Natesh Hegde, and China’s Kong Dashan and Wei Shujun with top prizes.
Many anticipated that this fifth edition of the festival would be different, given the shifting role of its co-founder and leading light, director Jia Zhangke. He unexpectedly stepped down last year, only to recant and come back in the nebulous role of “chief experience officer” months ago.
Instead, this year’s iteration has been more memorable for the backdrop of historically heavy rains that have left at least 15 dead, more than 120,000 relocated, and an estimated 1.8 million people affected in the inland Shanxi province.

This classic Chinese literature “Journey to the West” written by Wu Cheng En, concerning the epic voyage of Tang and his disciples, proves so popular that countless of TV series, comics and movies extract it for inspirations. In this case, Buddha apparently has imprisoned Sun Wu Kong (the Monkey King) for 500 years under the Five Finger Mountain for coursing havoc in Heaven. Accordingly, Tang San Zang, a Tripitaka monk, sent by Guanyin the Goddess of Mercy no doubt, comes along and releases him on the condition that he has to follow and protect him during their journey to India to retrieve the Buddhist scriptures. Along the way, they recruit two more disciples, a pig demon Chu Ba Jie (Pigsy) and Sha Jeng (Sandy).
