Scholastic is boosting its entertainment biz: The kids media and publishing company announced a $186 million deal to acquire full economic interest in 9 Story Media Group, a leading children’s content producer and distributor.
Through the investment, Scholastic will acquire 100% of the economic interest in and a minority of voting rights in 9 Story Media, the animation studio behind TV shows including “Doc McStuffins” (pictured above), “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood,” “Octonauts,” “Wild Kratts” and “The Magic School Bus Rides Again.”
The companies said the deal “solidifies” the more than two decades of collaboration between Scholastic Entertainment and 9 Story. The investment has been approved by both companies’ boards of directors and the shareholders of 9 Story. The deal is expected to close in Scholastic’s fiscal 2025 first quarter, which begins on June 1, 2024, subject to customary closing conditions.

It can be hard to be a parent in this media environment. Plenty of streaming services offer kids content, but it can sometimes be difficult to find, or parental controls on streaming devices can stop working correctly at random, leaving parents guessing as to the best ways to provide child-safe content to their kids.
Availability of content for children is a factor for 66% of parents when making streaming decisions, showing how important it is for families with kids to find good programming. That won’t be a problem with PBS Kids during the 2023-24 TV season, according to PBS Kids SVP and Gm Sara DeWitt.

The Television Critics Association awards nominations went public Friday, and it was great news for some series and sad news for others.
The Last of Us, The Bear, and Succession are in a three-way tie with five nominations apiece.
All three shows were expected to get some awards love, so their performances here are not surprising.
The Bear has been a bonafide hit for FX and Hulu, but there were some more first-year shows in the mix, too.
Andor, Jury Duty, Shrinking, Interview With the Vampire, and Poker Face were all well-represented.
Somewhat surprising: Ted Lasso and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel were shut out.
The news comes after both series have been big hits on the awards front and could set a precedent for upcoming awards shows.
Awards will be handed out at an in-person ceremony on August 7, 2023.

When Sesame Street and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood debuted in 1968, they didn’t just usher in a golden age of puppetry on TV. They also set standards for inclusion and education in children’s programming that the industry is still trying to live up to, decades later. Especially at the studios that launched them.
Developed for Children’s Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop), Sesame Street paired producers with educators to create programming designed to support and empower young viewers from lower income and underrepresented backgrounds, and populated its Manhattan-inspired set not only with a colorful menagerie of Jim Henson’s Muppets but also a racially diverse human cast.
Meanwhile, Henson’s friend Fred Rogers, the eponymous creator, host, head writer, lead musical composer and chief puppeteer of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, leaned on the expertise of child psychologists like his own mentor, Margaret McFarland, to help children navigate their feelings, relationships, self-image and curiosities.

After splitting off from the Daytime Emmys, the first-ever Children’s & Family Emmys ceremony is here.
Taking place at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, Dec. 10, the first night of the festivities focused on the creative arts, with trophies doled out for achievements in writing, directing, voice direction, cinematography, editing and more.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the establishment of the Children’s & Family Emmys in late 2021, nodding to recent growth in scope and reach among that programming, which NATAS president and CEO Adam Sharp said could “stand on its own two feet.” Indeed, younger audiences aren’t strictly daytime cable viewers anymore — much of the innovation in children’s and family TV in recent years has happened in streaming. Case in point: Netflix was nominated for more awards than any other platform, beating even Disney+, Disney Channel and Disney Junior combined.

Classic characters from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” are being reimagined in the new children’s series “Donkey Hodie” from Fred Rogers Productions and Spiffy Pictures that premieres today, Monday, May 3, on PBS.
The series follows the original puppet’s precocious namesake granddaughter whose big ideas sometimes get the best of her, but, with the help of Grampy and her friends, she learns to keep on trying. Each half-hour episode features two 11-minute stories.
The idea for the show started with the folks at Fred Rogers Productions. “We were looking at a list of character names from ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ and Donkey Hodie was so funny, it made us laugh,” chief creative officer Ellen Doherty recalls. “An idea started percolating about a preschool show about a little donkey with big dreams and the idea of perseverance and grit, and how apt that is for preschoolers who are little kids with really big feelings.

PBS’ 50th anniversary wasn’t supposed to be quite so interesting.
What the public broadcaster had expected was a forward-looking celebration of a half-century of service. But as with any other organization, PBS was forced to change plans in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, PBS has seen its mission made as clear as ever as it has spent its 50th year doing exactly what it was created to do — serve viewers of all ages with an array of programming designed to educate, enlighten, and yes, entertain.
“In many ways I feel that everything that we’ve done over the last 50 years has prepared us for this moment, for everything that we’ve done,” says PBS CEO Paula Kerger. “And so in a strange way, I can’t think of a better way to mark our 50th anniversary than to really be in deep service.”

Normally, around 1,600 people work out of the CBS Broadcast Center on West 57th Street in New York. But these aren’t normal times. Just about a dozen key staffers are still coming into the office, keeping the lights on as most everyone else works from home.
“Things have definitely changed,” says Glenn Oakley, CBS executive VP of global media technology operations. “We have reduced staff, down to skeleton crews virtually everywhere. We have definitely removed people going in to essential personnel only.”
These are the unsung heroes of TV: the broadcast, cable and local TV staffers who are still showing up to work in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Across the country, media outlets have sent most of their employees home to work — but there are some, particularly in operations and in news — who have been tasked with making sure their outlets are still on the air.

There comes a point in a household where the tinny sound of guffawing YouTubers leaking from a child’s headphones can be tolerated no more. A point when, after the possibilities of trees, nature, and industrial estate soft plays have been exhausted, it’s time for them, and you, to watch some proper kids’ television.
Below is some of the aforementioned proper kids’ television, all of it currently available to Amazon Prime subscribers.
Arthur

Odds are that the spread of coronavirus — and the forced family time that social distancing necessitates — are stirring up some “big feelings” in little ones. (And, let’s be honest: in their parents, too.)
Luckily, there’s a red-sweater-clad cat who’s very familiar with kids’ emotions, as well as with teaching grown-ups how to engage with them. PBS’ Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood — an animated offshoot of the classic Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood — is a go-to for the preschool set when it comes to unpacking situations that are overwhelming (the first day at a new school), exciting (a new sibling is on the way!

Phoebe Waller-Bridge‘s global takeover continued in earnest late Saturday, with the Brit auteur’s tragicomic Amazon series Fleabag dominating the 2019 Television Critics Association Awards with three trophies, including best comedy series, best comedic performer (for Waller-Bridge) and the coveted Program of the Year. Waller-Bridge, who in addition to being Fleabag‘s titular star also is the show’s creator/writer/EP, was on hand for the non-televised ceremony, which was hosted by Desus & Mero. (Could a Fleabag Emmy sweep be next?)
Waller-Bridge has previously stated that Fleabag‘s now-TCA award winning second season would serve as the series’ swan song.

The verdict is in for the 2016 Television Critics Association Awards, and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story was the biggest winner. The FX anthology miniseries not only won Program of the Year, but was the night's only multiple winner, also taking home awards for Sarah Paulson for Individual Achievement in Drama and for Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials. The Americans was a repeat winner for Outstanding Achievement in Drama, while black-ish became the first broadcast network show in a few years to win Outstanding Achievement in Comedy. With People v. O.J. as the only multiple winner, the TCA got to share the wealth at the private ceremony, which took place tonight at the Beverly Hilton. Mr. Robot was named Outstanding New Program, but the night had many winners from first-year series. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creator and star Rachel Bloom won the Individual Achievement in Comedy trophy.

PBS and Amazon have come to a deal that will see Amazon Prime become the subscription-video-on-demand home for the bulk of PBS' kids programming. The companies did not disclose the terms of what they said was a "multi-year" agreement.
The shows will continue to air first on PBS stations, then be available on Amazon after a certain period of time. The new deal does not include future series that PBS may introduce, while some of the network's popular programs stream elsewhere such as "Super Why" which remains at Netflix and "Curious George" at Hulu.
The agreement gives Amazon streaming rights to nineteen series overall, ranging from relatively new launches like "Nature Cat," "Ready Jet Go," "Odd Squad," "Peg + Cat" and "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood"; to mainstays such as "Wild Kratts," "Martha Speaks," "Dinosaur Train" and "Cyberchase"; to classics including "Reading Rainbow," "Caillou" and "Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman." Also included in the pact are "Design Squad,...
