Incohesive
LukasValk5 January 2024
Not a well told story. Poorly written and poorly directed. If you don't know the story go and save yourself an hour and a half and watch Jeremy Clarkson's documentary on Youtube which is way more exciting than this movie which to be honest doesn't make much sense half the time.

Sometimes sports movies are overdramatic and corny especially made in Hollywood but this time I was actually was missing Hollywood and all the cheesines

At least the movie looks good and if you're a rally or a racing fan in general then you might want to check this one out just for them glorious Group B cars. But set your expectations low.

"Inspired by True Event"
adrenachrome7 January 2024
Equals total fiction. And yes, at the end of the film the filmmakers admit as much, but as someone who is intimately familiar with the events surrounding the creation and racing of the Legendary Lancia 037, this film does it a grave disservice.

There is neither enough tension in the film, enough bystanders (indeed, WRC events are packed to the brim with spectators coming from all over the world) or enough of the cars themselves but more importantly, there simply isn't enough detail about the courses.

The history of the '83 WRC is rather glossed over in favour of interpersonal drama which was carried off in a rather hamfisted way.

The director and writing team had so much nailbiting material to work with and their results were just....mediocre. Watch the documentaries on YouTube instead.

Give it a chance. Not as bad as others say.

I read the reviews before watching the film and therefore had zero expectations. We have all seen Jeremy Clarkson's story-telling masterclass on the Grand Tour. This is the film version and overall it was better than I was expecting. The cars are great and the story could have been told better I'm sure. Daniel Brühl was one of the draws for me as he had played Niki Lauda to perfection in "Rush" and I was left feeling his character could have been more intense and the rivalry with Cesare Fiorio could have been developed further. Some of the incidental music was age appropriate which was good. I felt Ron Howard (Director of Rush) could have done more with this story. Maybe he can do the Group B story up until Henri Toivonen crashed his Delta S4 in Corsica leading to the Group B ban and the subsequent development of Group A and the Lancia Delta Integrale which dominated and won 6 years in a row.

They had an opportunity
pauricbr5 January 2024
Watch, take it for it is but as a mediocre enthusiast this was below par. Knowing the story from previews when it was happening(and I was only ten) this is a sad attempt. An opportunity to tell a great story with a little more enthusiasm was lost. This could have been great,a little more investment would have made such a difference. But to take it for what it is,it's okay, but with all tge modern cgi it could've been so much better. I think it trys to take in so much detail from am an era that will be famous in motorsport forever, that it loses context.

Like I said earlier,an opportunity was lost, this could have been made in to a franchise,or at least a four part, with more detail character reference and action. There are true to life documentaries more entertaining than this to be be fair,it is nothing like the Shelby vs Ferrari movie. I'm disappointed, in this day and age a far more entertaining and engaging movie is not too much to ask for.

Ok, but was lacking
BoredMovieWatcher31 March 2024
Race for Glory would've been amazing but I was truly disappointed at the final result. How could anyone take such an amazing story like the Lancia vs Audi rivalry and just gloss over the important bits like they were in a rush?

If you don't believe me when I say the story was glossed over, just see the first few minutes of the movie. It literally starts with a worded message of how Audi dominated the 1982 WRC season with its all-wheel drive Sport quattro. That's it. There was no build up for the main protagonist the movie sides with: Lancia. No mentions of Lancia's dominance from the 1970s before Audi. That's just lazy. If we were to side with Lancia in this film, you can't just not include their reputation from before like it doesn't have anything to do with the movie. It certainly does.

Also, I really hated how the movie treats Audi. There was a lack of screen time for Audi or even Daniel Bruhl's (Roland Gumpert) character. The only times when Bruhl was on screen was when Riccardo Scamarcio (Cesare Fiorio) was there to rial up tension between the two. That's the only rivalry we get. There's certainly way better ways to capture rivalries like this; for instance, Rush. What Rush did with the Hunt vs Lauda rivalry was amazing. They actually filmed both sides of the story, not just stick with one character and roll with it.

Lastly, pacing. You go from one race and then the next, you're back to interpersonal drama. For a racing movie like this, it's an insult. Again, another thing Rush did well was allocate a good bit of time to show the racing action. This movie with its hour and 40 minute run time seems to hurry the exciting bits of rallying so that we get more drama between Fiorio and his team.

Suffice to say, Race for Glory's adaptation of the actual story was lackluster. If I wanted to know what happened, I would've watched a documentary or even Jeremy Clarkson explain it in less time. And even if you weren't a fan of rallying, the film just doesn't cut it to give the audience the thrill of what made WRC legendary as it was back then. Yeah, some of the scenes of racing seemed alright, but it just wasn't enough to keep me glued to my seat.

Good story told in a bad movie
ataofaichi6 January 2024
As petrolhead, racing driver and journalist I always like cars and racing stories. But we are in era when films are made just to be made, and this one is the same. If you wan't viewers, you have to add drama, if you want drama, you need to make story up. It is great year for rallying, movie actualy contains some facts, but it has bad timing, bad directing, bad characters, poor acting and skips important events. When at the end for dramatic purposes somehow include 1985 Corsica event with fake driver, movie has it. There are better told documentaries, like Clarkson's. Movie to forget, unfortunately.

It's a love letter to Cesare Fiorio
x006413 January 2024
First and foremost, this is a movie about Cesare Fiorio and how he spent 1983. It just happens to be the Rally Championship, but don't expect to see a lot of rally driving.

If you always wanted to see the driver's faces and blurry forests instead of their cars on a road, the cinematography is for you.

Old footage did get used in some places, but not even properly upscaled, sharpened or graded to fit the rest. Some racing movies show more actual car scenes in the credits than this one has as a whole.

On a positive note, it's less dramatized than the average American documentary. Although, some of their changes are out of character. When Rohrl didn't want to win a race, he didn't show up.

A good movie, but that's not the way to adapt an excellent story.
felipe-eduardo15 January 2024
I'm a motor racing enthusiast and I know the story that inspired the movie. Many real events were brought in, but in a very superficial way. And other events were introduced in the wrong way. I won't give away any spoilers, the movie is good overall. I think that if you're not such a fan of the WRC you'll love the movie. For those of us who are fans, the movie is a bit embarrassing. After watching the video, I recommend that you research the real story, which is much more exciting. TheRUB channel has a 20-minute video that explains what the 1983 season was all about.

I still think it's a good movie, but the adaptation of the story wasn't precise enough to satisfy true WRC fans.

How can you ruin a great story this much?
fatihgocmen14 January 2024
I hate to write bad reviews but as a massive rally fan I have to. The original events are better than fiction and great material for an amazing movie. Even if you deliberately try to ruin the story you won't be able to ruin this much as this movie does. You should skip this movie and watch the little documentary that Jeremy Clarkson did. That captures the essence of the story much much better. I hope people forget this movie and in a couple of years some director who knows what they are doing picks up this amazing story and makes a great movie about this mesmorizing story which has every element in it. Passion, challenge, obstacles, rivalry, competition, creativity, borderline cheating, defeat, victory, incredible highs and lows. This story is wet dream for a great director.

Good film on Cesare Fiorio's risk-taking and success
mci-0969118 March 2024
I'm surprised of the negative reactions to this film... I guess some of you haven't seen "Lamborghini - The Man Behind the Legend"! (spoiler: don't)

As someone who remembers when this WRC season happened and followed it, I also had the advantage of being able to watch Race for Glory in the original Italian. The acting is so-so, some of the dialogue clichéd, but the racing scenes are in my opinion better than average.

One surprise was, despite a glaring misstep with the homologation officers counting Beta Montecarlos instead of Rally 037s and not even noticing, there was some attention to detail, such as Fiorio driving around in a period-correct high spec Lancia Gamma and the FIAT politics at the time. There's even a cameo many will not notice: in the fleeting scene where you see the "Avvocato" Gianni Agnelli face on, the uncredited actor is actually Agnelli's grandson Lapo Elkann.

The movie is not so much about racing as of the figure of Cesare Fiorio. Seen in this context, it's a pretty good movie that even my wife enjoyed. Just remember, it's not a documentary and doesn't intend to be.

This is a B movie about the golden era of group B Rallying
timgilpin8 January 2024
I was really looking forward to this movie especially after seeing that Daniel Bruhl was in it and what a good job he did in RUSH ! It looked promising about a sport that I grew up following and watching in the late 70s and early 80s in the UK !

Well my hopes were dashed like a rollover in the last stage of the RAC rally !

It is really like a home made movie in some parts and the drama acting / dialogue is pitiful ! Daniel Bruhl is wasted on this and I think it is his name and star power that will get eyeballs on this movie that's all - but a lot of fans like me will be disappointed see the other reviews.

The car testing footage is like it was done on a dirt road in someone's back yard - its just so fake ! They use some old stock footage and if you know the real drivers of that era - you can spot them.

The reenacted crowd scenes of the rallies are cringeworthy - worse than a soap !

God only knows what they spent the 70 Million budget on - seriously How !

Oh and don't get me started on the pronunciation of some of the rally drivers names by the actor interviewing Cesare Fiorio on the couch - Michele Mouton in particular - one of the BEST drivers ever !

Lancia 037
gerardbell11 January 2024
If you like old Italian cars then this is the movie for you. OK some of the scenes were made up (not making the 200 cars for homologation purposes) but the cars looked magnificent - Lancia 037, Lancia Beta, Fiat Ritmo, Fiat Mirafiori etc I really enjoyed it as in my earlier years I drove a Fiat 127 Sport, Fiat Supermirafiori, Lancia Prisma, Lancia Dedra etc. The storyline concerned the fight for the World Rally championship of 1983. After the dominating performance of the 4 wheel drive Audi Quattro it was up to Lancia 037 which was a mid engined rear wheel drive car to offer a challenge to them.

missed opportunity
montanaromichael15 March 2024
Race for Glory is a movie about rally, a car sport expressed as a thing for everyone, that everyone can live. Before going to the movies I had unfortunately seen negativity on social media. But after seeing it, I didn't see the poor quality that everyone was expressing. It's not a great film, but it's still decent. Scamarcio makes a good performance, but I think the best actor in the film is Daniel Bruhl, actor who has confirmed his level for a long time. Bruhl does not play a central character, but what he participates in does well. I didn't underrstand the Cesare Fiorio personality: the majority of the film is interpreted as a calm and quite introverted man, but on occasions it seemed to change totally personality. I really liked the sound, both musically and also during the races. It's also very well interpreted the race environment, just like it was back then. One thing I think a big flaw is the rhythm: despite having a low duration, the film is boring and monotonous, sometimes heavy. Another flaw is that, from my point of view, a biographical film must be true to what actually happened, while in some cases it seemed to deviate too much from the theme. Some comic notes are right and even the tones between the characters, but sometimes they become ridiculous. From this film I expected a lot, but unfortunately I bet on the wrong movie. In my opinion it's a very wasted opportunity, they could do something very nice with the plot.

This Movie is Meh !!!
vikingtales7 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Let me start by saying, I was really looking forward to watching this movie knowing a about this from the days when Rallying was the be all of Motorsport, and as a pretty big fan of the the sport back in those heady days.

Sadly this movie falls short in so many areas, it doesn't draw the viewer in and make them feel how special this era of Rallying really was, and what bugs me about movie makers and this one in particular, they have 3 languages in this movie well 4 if you include English, and there is not one subtitle so the viewer cannot understand the intricate details of what the engineers are talking about at the factory, or indeed the characters, in German, French and Italian, and maybe it doesn't matter to the non car buff, and perhaps this movie wasn't really made for us Rallying or car fans, but then what a waste of time, could have been so much more.

Overall I was disappointed with the movie, it could have been so much better and for a Rally fan much more immersive, the acting was pretty poor as well. 3/10 from me I'm afraid, I gave up after 50 minutes of disappointment.

by all means...

Warning: Spoilers
Without big hollywood film tycoon budgets pushing your economical spine into something that is caracterized as ''seeworthy'', and completely roadworthy film for the squemiest of WRC enthusiasts, its just to declare that this rallysport history feature movie lack alot on many areas and that it is made more as an enthusiastic motorholic project than a real good biopic of the sport that also have had norwegian drivers on top of the hill.

It lacks the glamour, its far to panned up on the focals and itsnot well edited, close to incoherent on the storybook too, and the lack of real blockbusting actors makes this story feel as cheap as everything was back then in the good ol' days.

Theyve managed to scrape the european veteranautomobileclubs inventory of rally and contemporary cars, so it may share a bliss together with the oldest part of the audience in the cinema.

The grumpy old man have never cared much for engines and speed, therefore i expected far more than this product.so just a small recommend for the average joe.

Great story, meh movie
roberthrasovec9 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
As a car enthusiast, I am disappointed, and I am sure many others are too. If you have watched Jeremy Clarkson's mini documentary of the race, you don't have to watch the movie. And if you haven't go and watch it, don't waste your time with the movie. You can clearly see how much of The Grand Tour's documentary was in the movie. SPOILERS AHEAD One of the examples are the lines said by the actors, that were taken out of the documentary or events that happen in the movie and the documentary that never actually happened (director at the end of the movie admits of creating some events that never happened), like how they cheated on the homologation inspection with only half of the cars needed for the actual inspection. The event never actually happened, Lancia delivered all 200 037s. I'm not saying that is a bad thing, copying and creating new scenes and events, my point is just that there is a lot of Grand Tour's documentary in that movie, that was just poorly rewritten and directed. All of the "Hollywood" scenes, that were meant to be exciting or thrilling just don't hit the excitement level you would expect and the end, Lancia's victory was just not exciting at all. It's such a shame.

Disappointing
satzmeister7614 February 2024
This should have been a home run movie for every car enthusiast out there.

But sadly the film makers don't understand rally racing, which they try to explain in the movie and naturally fail.

Even with a small budget, with good writing, directing and acting you could create suspense, drama and all other kind off emotions.

But for some reason the filmmakers don't find a pace for the movie, the characters and the story does not catch the viewers sympathy.

The editing is weird, it almost feels like a first draft.

And for every person who expects to see spectacular old school rally shots, even in cgi?

Na, it's not worth to watch for the car and racing scenes. So sad.

You will be better off watching old group b footage and listening to some 80s soundtrack.

Such a disappointment.

Learn the forein languages before viewing

What is with this trend of producing film and Tv in languages other than English, even without subtitles?

Quote: The Mother Tongues Award

The Mother Tongues Award is a development initiative launched by production companies Ardimages UK and Shudder Films, in association with sales agent Charades and UK distributor Curzon. The team is on the hunt for feature film projects at treatment or script stage, written by UK-based filmmakers, and set mainly in the UK, but in which the story dialogue is in a language other than English.

This can be any non-English language, whether native to the UK (including Welsh, Gaelic, Irish and BSL) or from another country. Typically, applicants will either speak the relevant language(s) themselves or have strong connections to it through their heritage or personal circumstances.

A piece of motorsport history
M4XB0X10 April 2024
I honestly can't understand the poor ratings of this film, perhaps those who didn't live through those years weren't able to fully grasp its spirit. The year 1983 marks a historic moment for motor racing and automotive engineering in general, being the last year that a two-wheel drive car competed in a rally race. The film describes very well the situation of the Lancia team and the dominance of the new 4X4 technology that Audi introduces into competitions. The plot is slightly fictionalized but the story as a whole tells of events that really happened in the championship 83' Rally fans can't help but see it!

Lacking the basics of good storytelling
davidca-215897 April 2024
Having read a couple positive reviews of this film, I have to say I was very disappointed.

The very first issue I noticed is that a lot of the English dialogue was clearly translated directly from Italian either by google translate or someone who doesn't have a great command of the former language. There are a lot of turns of phrase in here that are commonly used in Italian but sound unnatural in English. Speaking of Italian, could the actor who plays Ennio be more of a mumbler?

Following from that, the script and screenplay in general are not good. The only character the film makes an effort to bring to life is Cesare - the others are quite flat. Characterization is wildly inconsistent as well - Cesare seems to be a cool, analytical type until out of seemingly nowhere he tosses his proverbial cookies all over Walter, who himself is never more than a cardboard cutout. Walter is both tired of competing and extremely competitive - we never find out what's motivating him and throughout he just comes across as milquetoast. Ronal Gumpert, the Audi team boss, is introduced as a rival to Cesare early in the movie, and then never really shows up again after Cesare plays his trick at the Monte Carlo Rally.

Plotwise it actually started off reasonably well. One sees the difference between the (somewhat stereotyped) German and Italian styles, Cesare plays stereotypically Italian meta-mind games with Audi, Lancia somewhat amusingly bluffs their way through the FIA's homologation check. Then for some reason there's an awkward and overlong jazz montage at a hotel, and from there onward it just falls off the rails. A bunch of new characters are introduced who never really do anything to further the plot or introduce tension. Ronal Gumpert doesn't do anything but grimace and bark a couple words in German after Monte Carlo, which is a shame since Daniel Bruhl gave the best performance IMO in the early part of the film. There was what seemed an attempt to introduce some romantic tension between Cesare and the female doctor that really fell flat. One of the secondary Lancia drivers crashes and goes to the hospital, but we don't really know him and it's clearly just a vehicle to bring Walter back into the fold after the painfully contrived bust-up between him and Cesare prior to the race. After Monte Carlo the actual on-track races themselves are not really part of the plot, aside from the aforementioned contrived crash scene. The film ends in another overlong montage of nods and grins set to piano music.

The soundtrack became more and more grating and disjointed as the film went on, and there were so many montages, it started to feel a bit like watching a high school media class project. The editing overall was not good.

That there might be at least a little unambiguous positivity in this review, I can find it in me to praise the costumes, those were good and looked pretty authentically 80s to this millennial. The photography was, on the whole, underwhelming - they manage to photograph these absurdly powerful cars in such a way that they usually look like they're going at about 15 kph.

It's a shame that these filmmakers couldn't make a better story out of one of the more compelling stories in motor racing history. It's sad to see how far Italian filmmaking has fallen in general - we went from Fellini and Risi to cringe virtue signaling like "C'è ancora domani" and a deluge of mediocre romcoms.

This film gets the very basics of good storytelling wrong. It introduces the main conflict at the beginning of the film, drops it halfway through, and in its place tries to introduce a bunch of contrived underdeveloped interpersonal subplots that don't really affect the main plot. The script writers should have stuck to Italian, clearly the one language of which they had a solid command. Ultimately not a well-spent hour and 48 minutes.

Eco-Warriors Need Not Apply
benmaffin1 March 2024
In a world teeming with tweets about saving the turtles and Instagram stories of metal straws triumphantly stabbing into avocado smoothies, "Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia" revs onto the scene like a blast from a less apologetic past. This isn't your modern-day, battery-operated whisper on wheels; it's a full-throated roar from the era when cars had souls instead of software updates.

Let's face it, children of the era depicted in this cinematic homage understood cars. Not the soppy, sanitised, electrically-driven contraptions we're nudged towards today-no, sir. They embraced beasts wrought from steel and spirit, not recycled plastics and moral superiority. And while the world wrings its hands over carbon footprints, "Race for Glory" dares to tread heavily, leaving indelible marks of octane and adrenaline.

The film, inevitably shadowed by the spectre of "Rush"-a comparison as unavoidable as it is flattering-casts Daniel Brühl in a move that can only be described as inspired. Yet, where "Rush" seduces with its slick, sultry visuals and a modern palette, "Race for Glory" seems to stagger, burdened by its own ambition. It's akin to watching Cesare Fiorio on screen, ostensibly lost in thought-perhaps pondering over whether he left the stove on rather than strategising his next racing move.

Yet, amidst the mumbles and the haphazard storyline that seems to have been stitched together by a distracted seamstress, there lie moments of unadulterated brilliance. The film's audio might not always hit the mark, with too much of the dialogue lost in a mumble of Italian, but oh, the cars-their sounds cut through the fog like a lighthouse beacon, guiding the true petrol-heads home. It's a symphony of internal combustion that, quite frankly, might just be worth the price of admission alone.

For lovers of the Audi Quattros, this film flickers like a love letter written in gasoline-volatile, fiery, but ultimately, ephemeral. "Race for Glory" teases us with what could have been, a masterpiece lurking in the shadows of greatness, only to retreat into the mists of mediocrity.

As the credits roll, you're left dangling on the edge of your seat-not from suspense, but from a question that gnaws at the very fabric of your being: What if? In a cinematic landscape cluttered with the electric dreams and eco-conscious narratives, "Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia" emerges as a poignant reminder of the raw, untamed beauty of motorsport. It's a flawed ode to an era when cars were more than just transport; they were titans of the road, battling not for tweets, but for glory.

And there, just when you think you've figured it all out, the screen fades to black, leaving you pondering the future of racing, the environment, and whether true passion can ever be eco-friendly. Like a Dan Brown novel, you're compelled to turn the page, but alas, you'll have to wait. Will it be a reconciliation of past and future, or a continued ode to the petrol gods? Only time will tell, but one thing's for certain: you'll be thinking about it long after you've left the theatre.
