Gagan Arora shines, but the season not so much.
College Romance returns with a new season despite a terrible second season. Just like the last one, this season too is missing a character, and the reasons are not quite known. Raveena, portrayed by the beautiful Hira Ashar, disappeared from the second season, and this time the main lead of the show, Trippy, portrayed by the immensely talented Manjot Singh, has gone missing. If a show removes all it's main characters one by one, does it even remain the same show? Isn't it better to start a new series instead? College Romance never really had a story as such, it was mainly about the fun that took place between studies among a group of college friends that shared a great camaraderie with each other, and we had an exciting end to the first season. I don't know why was it necessary to carry forward this story, because there was nothing in it that deserved an expansion. Also, the first season was the vision of Simarpreet Singh, the screenplay was an extension and reflection of his personality; in his absence the show took a nosedive, in the second season.
The new season is quite an improvement from the second season, and the show-runners have tried to make it identical to the first season. There is more humour this time, with jokes that actually land. Gagan Arora is leading from the front as Bagga, as he continues to grab your attention the moment he appears on screen. Without a doubt, Gagan is a good actor and the show-runners have given him the maximum amount of spotlight, not only because of his popularity but also to hide the absence of Manjot Singh. Gagan seems to have more chemistry with Nupur Nagpal, who plays Dhatrapriya, as compared to his on screen girlfriend, Naira, played by Apoorva Arora. Nupur's scenes with her co-stars were hilarious in this season, especially the ones she had with Gagan. I feel she is a great addition to the show, as her comic timing is really good. Among the female actresses of the show, she was easily the best.
One of the most notable things in the second season was the change in Karan, played by Keshav Sadhna. It seemed as if someone took out all the positive energy out of this man, and that's why he had no interest in this world anymore. So, it seems the show-runners tried to overcompensate that in this season by making him over act. I had to reduce the volume every time Karan shouted, because his performance was just not bearable at all. Increasing the loudness of your characters does not result in a bigger impact.
I can't understand why has Shreya Mehta turned into a one note actress? She has displayed a better range in her YouTube videos. This act of hers looked good initially, but now it's just irritating. Why is she always angry, shouting and screaming at everyone? Why can't directors make her talk normally? How is Shreya Mehta fine with this? Deepika is a terrible character and every time she came on screen, I wished she was the one who left the show.
Eklavey Kashyap as Harry is another new addition to the show, who unfortunately failed to make any mark. His acting fades in comparison to what Gagan Arora, Manjot Singh and Keshav Sadhna have brought to this show. Eklavey is an extremely weak actor who single handedly brought down the entire energy of the show.
It's still not quite clear as to what these students study, but it looks like they are doing Engineering. For someone pursuing Engineering, these students have a lot of free time on their hands, because they are partying so much. Also, I get that students use abusive language, but is it really necessary to glorify this aspect of theirs? What is there to feel proud in it? This season was flooded with swear words, almost every dialogue was filled with at least one or two abuses. Creators think that they are adding a lot of value by making their characters swear, but the truth is that they are only using it as a cover fire to hide their incompetent screenplay.
I liked the innovative way in which the fight was conducted in the final episode. Using an old song as background score was unique as well as a relief, because show runners tend to add loud music to action sequences and more often than not it becomes unbearable.
The show-runners went bold this season by talking about Homosexuality and showing a lesbian couple. The conversation that Bagga has with everyone in the end was also a very good one, extremely relevant to the real world, but then they just cut abruptly, without offering a solution or closing that thread. The argument between Bagga and Naira also felt a bit too unnecessary and exaggerated, it just came out of nowhere.
The final song of the series is truly incredible. Written by Shivangi Bhayana, sung by Mandy Gill and composed by Rishi Dutta, 'Rul Gaye' is such a good song, that it instantly gets on your nerves and you wish to listen to it as soon as it ends. I feel like this song was too good for this series, it deserved to be in a movie; but nevertheless it put the spotlight on some talented musicians.
