Comedy drama film “Give Me Five” held on to the top spot at the mainland Chinese box office with a weekend score of just 7.4 million (RMB50.8 million).
The film is the story of a young man who is helping his father rediscover his lost memories. As he does so, he is transported back in time and accidentally alters his parent’s pasts. That means he must reunite the pair or risk never being born. It stars Ma Li Chang Yuan and Wei Xiang and is directed by Zhang Luan.
The film was released a week ago in time for the mid-autumn festival and scored 21.3 million in its opening weekend, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. Art-house title “Return to Dust” was a surprise weekend winner, topping the mainland China box office in its ninth weekend of release.
The astonishing feat occurred on an otherwise depressed weekend in which China’s cinema box office dipped to a three-month low. This reflected the summer season winding to an end and anti-covid measures once again forcing major Chinese cities into retreat.
Data from consultancy Artisan Gateway showed “Return” grossing 5.3 million (RMB36.2 million) between Friday and Sunday. Those three days accounted for nearly half of the 12.7 million (RMB87.4 million) cumulative total it has earned since release on July 8, 2022.
Directed by Li Ruijun, the film tells the tale of two middle-aged adults who agree to an arranged marriage in a rural town where state-ordered demolition is under way. It premiered in competition at the Berlin festival in February this year and subsequently played at the Udine and Hong Kong festivals.

Similar to recent weeks, we’re still in a holding pattern at the international box office, awaiting major new wide studio releases. There were a few milestones this session, however, and Japan has in general been a bright spot with local pic One Piece Film: Red and the continued thrum of Top Gun: Maverick while the market does the bulk of the lifting to potentially push Jurassic World Dominion across the 1B mark worldwide.
Universal/Amblin’s six-film Jurassic franchise has crossed the 6B mark globally. The current installment, Jurassic World Dominion, is now at a worldwide tally of 990.4M through Sunday. As we noted last weekend, Japan was the last major market to release, and may be the swing on whether the Jwd dino-meter clicks past 1B. The market was the top holdover with a 25 drop in its 5th frame, for a 40.9M local cume.

Gkids has acquired North American rights to New Gods: Yang Jian, the latest feature from renowned Chinese animation studio Light Chaser Animation. The producer and distributor of award-winning animated features has slated Yang Jian for theatrical release in both its original Mandarin-language form and an all-new English language dub early next year. The deal marks the latest collaboration between Gkids and Light Chaser Animation, following the former’s local distribution of the 2019 feature White Snake.
Helmed by Ji Zhao, New Gods: Yang Jian is the second installment of the studio’s New Gods series of animated action-fantasy epics inspired by Chinese mythological figures, following the 2021 feature New Gods: Nezha Reborn, also directed by Zhao. It picks up 13 years after Yang Jian (known to some as Erlang Shen) imprisoned his sister beneath a mountain, with the once powerful god now scraping by as a penniless bounty hunter.

With no new wide Hollywood tentpole releases until October, we’re in a period of holdovers, and local titles excelling in their home markets (and beyond), while Top Gun: Maverick continues to soar and there’s a will it or won’t it question mark over Jurassic World Dominion‘s shot at getting to 1B global.
Overall, it was a fairly active weekend at the international box office, with Germany in particular seeing uplift on a handful of titles — Constantin’s Guglhupfgeschwader is still No. 1 there after three frames.
For Hollywood, Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru saw a 37 increase in Germany this session (29.8M cume) and led all of international play at 26.7M in 83 offshore markets including debuts in China and Italy. The overseas cume is 483.6M, in line with Minions and Despicable Me 3. Global is 833.6M.
