Despite the well-meaning good intentions of the Mayor for championing such a noble, futuristic, and necessary cause, failing a massive adjustment to the rotational axis of the Earth, Los Angeles can never be the host city of a space elevator. The concept only works if the terrestrial anchor of the towering structure is located at, or in extreme proximity to, the planetary equator. Ecuador, Colombia, Zaire, or Sumatra are the more likely candidates to host the eventual construction of this vital link to humanity's future in space.
