- In this live performance phase of the competition, the top vocalists from each team will compete against each other during a live broadcast. America will vote to save one vocalist on each team, leaving coaches Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton to decide during the live show who they will save and who will not move on. Finally, each coach will have their best vocalist left standing to compete in the finale for the chance to win the grand prize of a $100,000 and a recording contract.—NBC Publicity
- "The Voice" - Live Show, Quarter-Finals #2 - June 14, 2011
We get a recap of last week and Cee Lo and Adam talking to/about their teams who are competing tonight.
Team Adam: Casey Weston, Devon Barley, Javier Colon, Jeff Jenkins
Team Cee Lo: Curtis Grimes, Nakia, Tori and Taylor Thompson, Vicci Martinez
Results from last week's competition: Team Christina Top vote getter/America's save: Beverly McClellan, she is surprised and grateful Coach save: Frenchie Davis Going home: Raquel and Lily (Christina comes up and hugs them)
Contestant: Tori and Taylor Thompson. They're singing "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," by the Andrews Sisters, chosen by Cee Lo who expects a dynamic vocal performance. They're confused by the song, which is old, and by the choreography.
Performance: Surrounded by dancing buglers and dressed in old-timey costumes, they're nailing the choreography and the harmonies. As Daly notes, it's perfect for Flag Day. It's very cute.
Adam: Calls it good old fashioned entertainment and incredible.
Blake: He loved it and wonders if the outfits were Cee Lo's idea.
Christina: Wonders if she just stepped off the set of her "Candyman" video and she thought it was fun and entertaining.
Cee Lo: He thanks them for doing such a wonderful job. They make him proud to be an American and he salutes them.
Contestant: Casey Weston. She's singing "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstall. She wants to do it slow and Adam wants to do it energetic. She's nervous but he wants a showstopper.
Performance: She performs it in its original tempo accompanied by two back up vocalist and some bucket percussionists. Center stage with her guitar she's fine, vocally throwing a little grit on it but maybe not distinguishing herself that much from the original. Blake: Thought it was awesome.
Christina: Thought it was really fun but to make sure she's more of a tiger in performance.
Cee Lo: Says she did a wonderful job.
Adam: Knows she was out of her comfort zone and is so happy about the way it turned out and she killed it.
Contestant: Vicci Martinez. She's singing "Jolene" by Dolly Parton. Cee Lo loves that and thinks she's got heart and soul but needs her to be more of the "total package."
Performance: She starts seated with her acoustic guitar in the audience shrouded in darkness. She drops the guitar and the band kicks in and she gets up with the microphone and takes a walk back to the stage. They've added a groovy loping percussion backdrop and she sounds good, impassioned, in tune, and dynamic building to a boil.
Adam: Calls it a soulful, raw, honest performance.
Blake: Calls her explosive.
Christina: Thought it was very heartfelt and her use of the stage.
Cee Lo: Thinks she did a wonderful job and worked the stage like a pro and her voice was big and commanding. Calls it perfect and the right thing to do.
Contestant: Devon Barley. He's singing "Stop and Stare" by OneRepublic. He wants to pour his heart into the song. Adam wants to build his confidence. Devon wants to strip everything away.
Performance: He looks small and alone on the stage, likely the point to underscore his vulnerability. His voice, sort of smoky, sounds good. He does seem nervous though and it's making it feel a little insular. The song is also kind of monochromatic and plodding, not offereing the best vocal showcase. He does pour his heart into it towards the end, he hits a bum note but it feels hard won, like he's allowing himself to be free.
Blake: He thought it was powerful and loved there was nothing onstage.
Christina: Says she's into him and thinks he really brings it.
Cee Lo: Loves that he doesn't look the way he sounds.
Adam: Loves that he was confident and he's so proud of him.
Video Package: Cee Lo takes his team for a spa day.
Performance: Team Cee Lo performs Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People" decked out in '70s gear including a big wig for Cee Lo.
Contestant: Nakia. Cee Lo says he's looking for him to lead the pack. He's singing "Sex on Fire," by Kings of Leon which knocks him out of his comfort zone, in a good way apparently.
Performance: He comes out in shades, strutting, he takes off the shades and belts the song out while two female dancers swing pronged props with fiery ends. He has no shortage of confidence which is definitely working for him. He's got that gritty soul/blues voice that may not be exceptional but he's selling it with his attitude, including a dramatic drop to the knees.
Blake: Felt the burn.
Cee Lo: Loved it, thought it was impeccable.
Christina: and Adam: don't get to say anything?
Contestant: Jeff Jenkins. He's singing "Jesus Take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood. He relates it to his mom passing away and Adam tells him to convey that emotionality. They talk about raising the key since the range is so big.
Performance: He sounds a little trembly, and it's unclear whether it's nerves, emotions, or poor breath control or all three. He's hitting a few clunkers but mostly he's fine and he's singing with heart and conviction.
Christina: Thought it was beautiful. She asks if his mom dug that song. He says she did but he chose it more because it was about going through a dark time.
Adam: He did such an incredible job that he forgot that it was a competition.
Cee Lo: and Blake: don't get to say anything.
Video Package: Adam takes his team for lunch at his house and gives them some inspiring words.
Performance: Team Adam performs "With a Little Help From My Friends" with a great big gospel choir.
Contestant: Curtis Grimes. Cee Lo chose "Addicted to Love" by Robert Palmer thinking Grimes can sprinkle a little country on it. Cee Lo wants him to make it sexy. Grimes thinks it's a risk.
Performance: In a black cowboy hat he drawls it off, he does it pretty sexy, he's sort of Alan Jackson-like in his vocals. Sexy cowgirls writhe around him. It's a little corny but the arrangement is working.
Adam: Says he really wears the cowboy hat, liked the different approach to the song.
Blake: Thinks he looks good and was awesome.
Christina: Wastes a lot of time talking about him making out with girls, Carson, and Cee Lo's sexual stuff. Thinks it was great.
Cee Lo: Thinks he did a wonderful job and loved his confidence and his character. He loves the alternative of the song and thinks his team is kicking ass tonight.
Contestant: Javier Colon. He's singing "Angel," by Sarah McLachlan, it reminds him of a lullaby he'd sing to his kids. Adam calls his biggest strength, his range, but also his weakness. Adam wants him to stay true to the melody and reel in the extra melisma and falsetto.
Performance: He sits at the piano, accompanied by strings, and belts it out. It feels a little fast and he already feels pretty high in the energy area but he does give himself some room to build to more impressive vocalizing. It's a little overwrought vocally but there's no arguing with his talent and soulfulness.
Blake: He says you don't talk about Javier you go out and buy his records, t-shirts, and concert tickets.
Christina:She calls him the one that got away. Calls him a talent to be reckoned with. Says he made it his own.
Cee Lo: Says he epitomizes the title of the show.
Adam: Calls it perfect.
