Interview by Kevin Scott

I had the privilege recently to talk with the very talented director James Cullen Bressack. He’s becoming the Cameron Crowe of Horror directors by being a wunderkind and showing mind blowing talent as a writer and director even before he could buy his own beer. I was grateful to get some insight from him, find out what inspired him, and see what’s next. Special thanks to actor/producer/writer Zack Ward for joining in on the interview.
Ks: I know that you get this a lot, but you are a really young guy. You seem so close to the golden age of VHS, with a love for such classics as “Basket Case” and the William Lustig films, yet you are a generation removed. How did you discover them?
Jcb: I got really into watching VHS stuff. My Dad had “Hellraiser” on VHS.

If you’re a long time reader of my work, be it here on Nerdly, or the sites previous incarnation, Blogomatic3000, you’re probably aware of the my love for the work of a director called James Cullen Bressack. It was way back in 2011 when the young director emailed me out of the blue asking if I’d possibly like to review his first feature My Pure Joy – now the film was rough but showed a lot of promise for a first film. Bressack followed that film up with the (literally) stunning Hate Crime, a film which I’ve been championing since the first time I saw it…
So much so that when I sat down with a plan to release some of the many, many, films I’ve seen over the years that have not had the chance of an official UK debut, Hate Crime, along with Breassack’s...

What happens when you team one of America’s best indie horror filmmakers (directing from his own script) with one of America’s biggest mockbuster makers, The Asylum? Well, you get 13/13/13.
Seemingly inspired by Darren Lynn Bousman’s 11-11-11, The Asylum have, since 2011, been releasing thematically similar horror flicks for the past few years. In 2011 we had 11/11/11, and last year they released 12/12/12 and this year we get 13/13/13 (the title will make sense once you’ve seen the film). The Asylum’s previous “demonic number” flicks told of children, anti-christs reborn on earth, and how they were set to bring about the apocalypse. Well now The Asylum have taken it a step further with this flick – the apocalypse is well and truly under way in this ends of days tale…...

Pardon my language but… Fuck me! I’ve been a fan of James Cullen Bressack’s work for some time now, ever since that fateful day he sent me an email asking me if I’d like to review his first full-length feature My Pure Joy. Bressack followed that hard-hitting flick with a segment in the first Theatre of the Deranged anthology and the notorious (and totally amazing), Hate Crime. Now in all honesty I though he couldn’t top Hate Crime. After all that film was, at least for me, a perfect mix of story and style – Bressack’s directorial sensibilities fit perfectly with the content and you could tell that everyone involved wanted to make the best movie they could, even given the touchy subject matter.

Possibly one of the most powerful films I have ever seen, Hate Crime is the second feature film by 20 year old James Cullen Bressack, (his first being the equally outrageous My Pure Joy). Despite its name the film is a labor of love from a dedicated group of people looking to make something different. But be warned, this film isn’t for everyone, Hate Crime is in fact a violent, realistic portrayal of one societies worst nightmares… being attacked in our home.

Let’s get the standard caveat out of the way first – I hate, no, loathe the “found-footage” sub-genre of horror, it’s often used as a cheap and easy way to tell a bad story. There are of course exceptions to this rule – of which Hate Crime is one.
Hate Crime has, at it’s core, a very simple premise. A family are gathered together to celebrate the birthday of the youngest member and as the father has done every year, he films the occasion. Only this year is different, in the midst of the celebration the family are subjected to a violent home invasion by a trio of masked men brandishing guns and waving swastikas, determined to...

When Good Holiday’s Go Bad: Rise of the Fiend: “Halloween, that magical night that compels adults to act like children, children to gorge themselves and a host of creatures and ghouls, those nasty beasties that hide under your bed, in your closet or the deepest recesses of your mind, all come out to play, scaring and frightening their human victims; at least, that’s how it was in the old days.

An email landed in our inbox today from indie whiz kid James Cullen Bressack about a new super-secret horror project he's going to be working on next year, and while details are scarce, we thought we'd help him break the news.
Benetone Films and Hillin Entertainment have tapped Bressack (Theatre of the Deranged, My Pure Joy) to write and direct a fully financed horror film to be shot in Thailand in January of 2013. The project will be produced by Rachvin Narula, Kulthep Narula, and Daemon Hillin. Benetone and Hillin are coming off of A Stranger In Paradise, which was also shot in Thailand and stars Colin Egglesfield, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Byron Mann, and Stuart Townsend.
The new project's storyline is being kept under wraps for now, but Bressack promises it will provide horror fans "a frightful good time." Look for more soon!

According to the official press release, there will be other short motion pictures hanging out inside the upcoming horror anthology “Theater of the Deranged II”. And while that’s all fine and dandy, all I really care about at this point is seeing “My Pure Joy” director James Cullen Bressack’s “Unmimely Demise”. It’s a slasher flick, one that’s centered around a murderous mime who uses invisible weapons to take down his prey. That’s right: Invisible Weapons. It’s a damn shame this is just a short, as I’d love to see an entire full-length feature centered around this concept. I’m kind of surprised nobody’s tackled this sort of concept before. Check out the official synopsis: After 10 years, Cheeky the Mime returns reaping havoc on anyone in his path. Armed with an arsenal of invisible weapons, it is up to a meek friend from...

What could have been a brilliant marketing campaign for an edgy horror flick has completely fallen apart. How remarkably disappointing. Instead of hitting retail shelves on February 14th, 2012, director James Cullen Bressack’s “My Pure Joy” has been pushed to March 13th, 2012. The film will be released courtesy of Media Blasters’ Fresh Meat label, which appears to be focusing on up-and-coming talent within the genre. Here’s what you can expect from the picture’s plot: On the outside Adam appears to be a normal teenager, but underneath…his mind has been so rotted by trauma from his past and the gory films he watches, that he has blurred the lines between reality and pretend! This prompts Adam to start killing people in similar ways to films he watches, making sure to put his own little spin on it. Remember, kids: “My Pure Joy” is no longer available as a...

What better way to say “I love you” than with the gift of hardcore violence? James Cullen Bressack’s “My Pure Joy”, a film that was lensed when the director was only 18 years-old, is headed to DVD courtesy of Media Blasters on February 14th, 2012. Yes, Valentine’s Day. The film has been compared to the works of Frank Henenlotter, Takashi Miike, and Herschell Gordon Lewis, which, you know, sets the bar kind of high. After all, not many people come close to touching the genius of Henenlotter. Take a peek at the official synopsis: On the outside Adam appears to be a normal teenager, but underneath…his mind has been so rotted by trauma from his past and the gory films he watches, that he has blurred the lines between reality and pretend! This prompts Adam to start killing people in similar ways to films he watches, making sure to...

From writer/director Clay DuMaw and executive producer James Cullen Bressack (My Pure Joy) comes "Get Out Alive". A creature feature throwback to the horror films of yesteryear by capturing that monster movie feel of Shriek of the Mutilated and the sleazyness of Basket Case.
While returning home from their Spring Break vacation, wealthy siblings Paul and Marilyn find themselves stranded at a desolate truck-stop along the back roads up Upstate New York. Before long, they discover that a strange creature is being held in a cage behind the local auto shop, and the shop's mechanic plans on feeding them to the beast. In their attempt to escape, Paul and Marilyn fall prey to a group of homicidal rednecks bent on preserving the secret of this bloodthirsty monster.
Get Out Alive is currently halfway through production. For more info into this project please visit:

My Pure Joy And you thought the cast of the hit TV series Glee or Gossip Girl or The Real World were suffering from some teenage angst! Just judging from this new trailer (seen below, after the jump), the anti-hero of My Pure Joy, directed by James Cullen Bressack, is one crazy Sob. That poor kid looks completely bonkers. He looks completely out of his mind! I would be ready to put him in a straight jacket asap, but then that wouldn't be any fun as we wouldn't get to see the deliciously twisted murder spree that he engages himself in. My Pure Joy aims to be a micro budget psychological horror thriller in the vein of Deranged or Crawlspace, but with lots and lots of gore!

Hailed as one of the youngest writer/directors working in the horror genre today, 19 year old James Cullen Bressack’s My Pure Joy is a low budget serial killer flick with some of the “most revolting kill scenes ever put on celluloid.”
On the outside Adam appears to be a normal teenager, but underneath…his mind has been so rotted by trauma from his past and the gory films he watches, that he has blurred the lines between reality and pretend! This prompts Adam to start killing people in similar ways to films he watches, making sure to put his own little spin on it.
Filmed on a budget of $7k, My Pure Joy has been touted as being one of the most exploitative films ever made and judging by the trailer below that could very well be true!
