Co-writer Alec Naffziger passed away unexpectedly in January 2023 - just weeks before production was set to begin. He was Anthony Catalano's college roommate, best friend, and creative partner. Anthony decide to proceed with production as scheduled in his honor, even though Alec was also set to perform many tasks on set. The film is dedicated in his memory.
Reunites most of the cast and crew from Anthony Catalano's first film, Last Testament (2021)
Anthony Catalano specifically wrote the script with Dominick Alesia, Anna Roemer, and Rima Sabal in mind for their respective roles
Development of the story started with the title. Anthony Catalano became inspired by seeing a meme with the word 'SOON' above a menacing raccoon. After a quick IMDB search, Anthony was surprised to see that there weren't any movies named Soon. Anthony Catalano and Alec Naffziger developed an extensive treatment featuring supernatural elements inspired by Sam Raimi's The Gift (2000). It told the story of a holistic healer who starts having psychic visions of the death of a missing person. It was intended to Anthony Catalano's first feature film, but the script never made it off the ground and the story was deemed too expensive for his limited resources. Anthony shifted his attention to the true story of Ricky Rodriguez, which became his debut film Last Testament (2021). In late 2020 during the lull in between submitting Last Testament to film festivals and awaiting responses, Anthony found inspiration to rework SOON when he stumbled upon several YouTube videos about unboxing weird and disturbing mystery packages purchased off of the dark web. A rough draft with an entirely different story came together quickly, the only similarities to the original treatment being several character names, the main character receiving an ominous letter in the mail that says 'soon', and the climax.
