Creative collaboration on a record scale
MichaelvanK1 June 2022
Pulling together so many diverse stories and styles, melding the horror of the impending doom of the world with elements of humour, humanity and hope has created a truly fascinating glimpse into the psyche of record number of screenwriters who participated in this film.

The opening with Olivia Williams as the President of the USA sets the scene and the realistic, true-to-life way in which the actors portrayed the characters delivered the stories with emotion.

My only criticism would be that there were a few too many minutes in the final cut.

Well worth a watch.

Impressive

Didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as I did. So many different ideas pulled together to create one story. I've got to admit the scene with the farmer and his dog had me in tears!

Well done to all the writers of which there was many!

Interesting framework for a narrative
info-03841-961716 June 2022
Very much enjoyed the holistic experience of The Impact. A great initiative that produced some little gems of ideas / films. Not 100% successful at being dramatically engaging, but a concept-driven film like this keep the attention throughout.

The Better "Meteor Movie" You Need to See This Year
leightrifari7 June 2022
I've been waiting eagerly for the release of this movie since I first learned about it in 2018. The herculean task Chris Jones has achieved by knitting together 50 different stories by 50 different storytellers into one film cannot be emphasised enough. "Impact 50" is relentless in delivering a catalogue of real HUMAN reactions and emotions..I found it hard to look and then hard to look away some times. Surprisingly, the pacing was actually pretty good, given the number of stories and how long each scene was.

A vignette with an elderly couple left to their own devices on an abandoned beach was both heartwarming and bittersweet. It felt real and authentic and reminded me that life is always too short to tell someone you love them. There were comedic moments as well as heart-wrenching scenarios with no happy ending in sight. The acting across the board, through 50 different directors, was consistently on the mark. There were no celebrities in this film and there didn't need to be. Unlike another meteor movie which came out last year, this film explores REAL human emotions and REAL human responses, and I found myself crying for every single person I saw on screen at the end.

My only criticism would be that at times the pacing was a bit slow, but given the number of stories and the range and style of each one, it was executed pretty damn near flawlessly.

Kudos to Chris Jones and kudos to the final 50 writers and directors who made the final cut. Beyond the attempted Guinness record-breaking nods ("most writers/directors" in a single film", "most names in the credits", etc ), this is a film that will touch you to your core and make you want to go hug a loved one afterwards.

Well worth the watch.

Well... My Goodness...
catieaph25 June 2022
Lots of viewpoints put together sometimes a bit hard to swallow, but eventually revealing the thread of the tapestry interwoven with all the different threads.

Thought provoking and touching, not sure how it will go down on the circuit. A bit long, but I see the work and applaud everyone for the effort it took to put these together and then the editing done to thread it all together!! My Goodness!

Kudos and thank you for allowing me to attend!

Makes an emotional impact
project-2857412 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Short excerpts of peoples' lives in the couple of hours before an apocalyptic meteor strike are interwoven to give a very satisfying narrative overall, which elicited emotions from tears to laughter. By structuring the film as blocks of intercut films, it's easy to follow different characters' stories, and it is perhaps surprising to realise how many writers and directors were actually involved in making this record-breaking feature.

Great collective effort.
allyear_lff29 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Guerrilla Filmmaking has been a concept that has grown in popularity and Chris Jones, one of his most serious divulgers and proponents in the UK, has given many budding filmmakers the inspiration to wet their toes in the filmmaking water by means of books, seminars and many other efforts.

This collective film is such an effort, people presenting scripts, others criticising them and selecting some for production, and eventually making a film with all the work of the participants, a series of short films that circumscribe themselves to a single theme, in this case to present the situation in which an asteroid is hitting planet Earth and people have literally minutes to decide what to do.

The idea is compelling and the beginning of the film (spoilers start here) is great: the US president sits in front of the camera and lets people know that the eponymous asteroid will make impact in around 90 minutes and there is nothing to be done about it and that is the end of it all, So far, so depressing.

From here all the short films (I believe 50 of them, thus the title) grapple with the theme, all of them with great skill, some of them repeating the core theme from the same angle (there are lots of family goodbyes and children left in the dark about the impeding doom) and a few really thinking out of the box (only a couple of films manage to save some of the characters, one for a few months to come, another one has a more singular escape for one of the characters, even though the actual action isn't there).

The films have everything: animals, a French couple looking fab on their wedding day, a Russian astronaut, some special effects, stunts, and children, children, children, which really says where the hearts of most good people making these films are, which was really moving albeit a tad boring I have to say, and surprisingly few military men, a normal trope in end of times films in which the military often takes over. Yay to pacifism I say (although there is an ominous background noise with people screaming in the distance and choppers flying by).

I was expecting superheroes but the only heroes were regular people, some of them taking terribly difficult decisions in moments that will touch the heart of even the most cynical person.

The quality of the acting is overall very good, no goofy overacting or bad acting, which is quite impressive considering the amount of actors involved (a number that should be in the hundreds), the films are polished technically and the editing, which I am sure must have been a nightmare, comes with great credit by mixing all this discordant action together in a product that can be shown and which is a pleasure to watch.

Well done to all the people involved, and if you are a new viewer pondering if you should watch the film, fear not, it is a great piece of solid entertainment.

Not just another 'end of the world' movie.
anneatbruton12 June 2022
Really enjoyed the different scenarios presented on how people used their last 97 minutes on earth. Made me reflect on how I would spend that time. Loved the collaborative approach. Highly recommend it.

Thought provoking, inspiring and creative... A must see movie for all!
racheloverd1326 June 2022
I love what Chris Jones has done here - the opportunities and platforms he has given all those involved, especially in an industry that's tough to crack! On top of that he has given everyone who gets to watch it, a truly inspirational and entertaining film to watch. It is lengthy but I was still able to watch it all the way through without losing interest, due to the diverse and colourful stories, along with the engaging, authentic writing and actors which really brought the scenes to life.

I love the farmer and his dog (heart wrenching) and crazy cat woman ... because my pets are my life! So glad I'm not the only one! I thought the school scene, the hospital scene (made me cry the most), the newly married couple, the old couple, the virgins - were all very amusing or heartbreaking (of both)... I also thought the art scene was very creative and applaud that director and filmmaker.

I loved it all and felt the first scene really set the film up well - I was glued from the start. It really does make you think about what you would do in your last moments. It also made me want to get on with some things and take some risks to ensure I make the most of life, and to always tell those you love, that you love them every day... just in case! Moreover, it made be want to be a part of this epic opportunity... and to keep an eye out for the next one so I don't miss out ...

How proud you should all be... actors, writers, directors and filmmakers - what an achievement!! And well done to Chris - what a story - a subject matter that made it easier to put such a varied collection of short stories together. This was such an amazing idea for a storyline. It's a hit!

The Impact
rstephensclan12 June 2022
A gripping movie that had all the ingredients required of its genre. The acting was a tour de force especially considering the number of people in the cast. The camera work and special affects were also very worthy of mention. Whilst the outcome was certain I was optimistic that a solution would be found- alas not. A phenomenal effort in coordinating the number of screen writer involved which would be worthy of a screen nomination in Itself.

A crowd-created tapestry
jkildee-827624 June 2022
It was really interesting to see how all the stories were seamlessly stitched together to create a cohesive, engaging film. Some of the scenes were incredibly moving, like the health carer and patients in a remote hospital, and the farmer and dog scene (that dog deserves a canine Oscar!). Other stories made me laugh out loud, which I wasn't expecting given the premise.

Amazing job!
