- Aurora Fane: It's often hard to tell who people really are. I was always warned never to take a soldier as a suitor until I'd met him out of uniform.
- Oscar Van Rhijn: I'd say Mr. Morgan will be only too happy to get out of his uniform.
- Larry Russell: Susan Blane is a decent woman.
- Bertha Russell: Decent women don't sleep with men young enough to be their son.
- Larry Russell: This one does!
- Agnes Van Rhijn: Now, I need your word. You will only treat Miss Scott with courtesy and respect.
- Armstrong: But what if she's unkind to me?
- Agnes Van Rhijn: Then knowing Miss Scott, I'd say you had it coming.
- Armstrong: You would replace me?
- Agnes Van Rhijn: Well, if you cannot behave, you leave me no choice.
- Armstrong: But what would I do? How would I live?
- Agnes Van Rhijn: Oh, there's no need for this. I mean, you can get another job.
- Armstrong: No, people like to train a maid when there are many years left in her. No one will want to bother with training me, not now.
- Church: I just hope we might leave that incident in the past. I was very angry, and I behaved foolishly.
- Bannister: It almost cost me my job.
- Church: As I say, it was stupid. And I apologize unreservedly. But can we put it behind us?
- Bannister: Forgive and forget, you mean? Yes, I always wonder about that phrase. It is, I agree, sometimes possible to forgive. But one cannot forget.
- Church: Well, I hope we can live in peace.
- Oscar Van Rhijn: I was rather nervous when it took so long for you to answer.
- George Russell: You were right to be nervous.
- Bertha Russell: I want to know what you think you're doing with a woman twice your age and ill-suited for you in so many other respects I haven't got time to list them.
- Larry Russell: I like Mrs. Blane.
- Bertha Russell: When there are countless charming and suitable young ladies for you to pursue?
- Larry Russell: Susan Blane appeals to me mostly because she's quite unlike those suitable young ladies. And I'm fairly certain you don't want me to elaborate on that.
- Bertha Russell: Other young men deal with these things without causing comment.
- Larry Russell: Yes, they go to prostitutes. Would you prefer me to do the same?
- Bertha Russell: I prefer there to be no scandal.
- Richard Clay: As you said yourself to the others, we must never surrender to threats. To yield is to lose.
- Agnes Van Rhijn: Your fate is in your hands. If you show kindness to Miss Scott, then you may keep your position.
- Armstrong: But, ma'am...
- Agnes Van Rhijn: I see you have mistaken this for a discussion, when I am simply giving an order.
- Peggy Scott: I have no quarrel with you, Miss Armstrong. I mean it. But I promise you do not want one with me.
- Gladys Russell: Your former lady's maid is now your neighbor in Newport?
- Larry Russell: Welcome to America.
- Bertha Russell: Where were you all night?
- Larry Russell: At Mrs. Blane's house.
- Bertha Russell: Was it a party or just the two of you?
- Larry Russell: Do you really want me to spell it out for you?
- Larry Russell: You don't mind disruption.
- Susan Blane: I gave 20 years to a man who couldn't bear to use a different spoon with his egg in the morning. I long for a bit of disruption.
- George Russell: See if we can buy him off.
- Richard Clay: You mean I should offer him money?
- George Russell: Money or a little power. Power is very seductive, I'm told.
- Richard Clay: Suppose he's a man of principle.
- George Russell: It'll just make him more expensive.
- Peggy Scott: I've been offered my old job back on 61st Street.
- Arthur Scott: And you're taking it, I assume.
- Peggy Scott: I need a new start.
- Arthur Scott: If you need something new, why are you going back there?
- Peggy Scott: Because we can't go on like this. We need to get away from each other.
- Arthur Scott: That's not what family does.
- Peggy Scott: Our family has done a great many things that are not what a real family does.
- Gladys Russell: He can be very amusing. He does make me laugh.
- George Russell: That is a useful quality, I grant you, but it is not enough to base a marriage on.
- Armstrong: [after Peggy Scott has completed a task that had been assigned to Armstrong] Is this some sort of trick?
- Mrs. Bauer: It seems as if Miss Scott has done you a good turn, Miss Armstrong.
- Bannister: Aren't you going to say thank you?
